Abstract: The application discloses methods of treating mammalian diseases characterized by abnormal cell mitosis by administering estradiol derivatives including those comprising colchicine or combretastatin A-4 structural motifs of the general formulae found below in a dosage sufficient to inhibit cell mitosis. The application discloses novel compounds used in the methods.

Abstract: A memory device for use with a cellular telephone capable of communicating with a customer activation center (CAC) via a cellular telephone network. The memory device includes a dummy mobile identification number (MIN). An instruction can cause the cellular telephone to use the dummy MIN to gain access to the cellular telephone network and to use a radio frequency (RF) transmitter of the cellular telephone to send the dummy MIN to the CAC. Another instruction can cause the cellular telephone to use an RF receiver of the cellular telephone to receive a valid MIN from the CAC over the cellular telephone network. A further instruction can cause the cellular telephone to store the valid MIN in the cellular telephone. The memory device can be implemented as a personal computer memory card international association (PCMCIA) card.

Abstract: The present invention provides certain alpha-amino acids and derivatives thereof, such as, but not limited to, esters, amides and salts. These derivatives may comprise such representative side groups as a phenyl, pyridyl, piperidinyl, tetrahydropyranyl, tetrahydrothiopyranyl, or thienyl group. The present invention further provides a method for synthesizing alpha-amino acids and derivatives thereof via a modified Ugi type reaction using an aldehyde, ammonium formate and a C1-C5 alkyl isocyanide. The compounds provided by this method are useful in the development of new pharmaceuticals for the treatment of human diseases.

Abstract: Prefilled, disposable syringes for injecting preparations with a fill volume of less than 5 ml are typically made of glass. The disposable syringe in this invention avoids the use of glass as a construction material. The body of the syringe with barrel, grip and nozzle is made of transparent, glass-like plastic with a very low gas permeability and is designed to be resistant to gamma rays and/or ethylene oxide gas, whereby the hypodermic needle is directly integrated within the plastic nozzle.

Abstract: The present invention relates to vitrification of ion exchange resins that have become loaded with hazardous or radioactive wastes, in a way that produces a homogenous and durable waste form and reduces the disposal volume of the resin. The methods of the present invention involve directly adding borosilicate glass formers and an oxidizer to the ion exchange resin and heating the mixture at sufficient temperature to produce homogeneous glass.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing international wireless roaming allows an international “roamer” to enter a visited system in a foreign country and originate calls. Upon entering the visited region, the roamer's mobile station initiates a registration request containing the mobile station's mobile identification number to the mobile switching center in the visited region. The mobile switching center initiates a message to an appropriate home location register. The home location register compares the mobile station's mobile identification number to a set of stored values. If an agreement is in place between the home location register provider and the roamer's home service provider, the home location register will return an appropriately formatted North American Numbering Plan mobile directory number to the mobile switching center.

Abstract: Multi-function, adjustable seats and methods and systems for their manufacture and utilization are disclosed. Such seats are especially, although not exclusively, designed for use in commercial aircraft in response to consumer requests for enhanced comfort during long-haul flights. In addition to providing rocking motion, the seats have bottoms whose lengths are adjustable and provide stowable tables adapted not only to permit vertical adjustment, but also to tilt out of a horizontal plane and latch in an as-tilted position to function as a rest for a book, magazine, computer, or other object. Digital control technology, including a touch screen or similar device, may be employed to actuate features of the disclosed seats.

Abstract: A biodegradable hydrophilic binder fiber. These fibers may be produced by co-spinning a high-melting aliphatic polyester core material with a highly wettable aliphatic polyester blend. The highly wettable aliphatic polyester blend comprises an unreacted mixture of an aliphatic polyester polymer selected from the group consisting of a polybutylene succinate polymer, a polybutylene succinate-co-adipate polymer, a polycaprolactone polymer, a mixture of such polymers, or a copolymer of such polymers; a multicarboxylic acid; and a wetting agent. The biodegradable hydrophilic binder fiber exhibits substantial biodegradable properties, yet is easily processed. The biodegradable hydrophilic binder fiber may be used in a disposable absorbent product intended for the absorption of fluids such as body fluids.

Abstract: A Consistency Checker provides an improved method of analyzing a Japanese text document to identify inconsistently spelled words. The Consistency Checker utilizes a Reading Pair Database (RPD) and a Compressed Lexicon Database (CLD) to determine the reading units within a word, to calculate a Reading Pair Identification Number (RID) for each reading unit, to calculate a Sense Identification Number (SID) for each word, and to calculate a Spelling Variant Identification Number (SVID) for each word. Spelling variants are generated by combining variations of individual RIDs in the RID array. A Registry is updated to maintain statistics on all of the words within the document. An error field within the Registry indicates that the document contains more than one spelling variant of a particular word. The client program can access the Registry to alert a user to inconsistencies discovered in the document.
