The execution of the application requires execution of at least two tasks. The method comprises selecting operating points for each of the tasks from a predetermined set without knowing all implementation details. Abstract: A system for measuring velocity of a target is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes a laser device, a detector and a signal processor. The laser device produces a frequency-modulated laser beam, wherein the frequency-modulated beam is split into at least two laser beams, wherein a reflected beam comprising one split beam is directed to the target and reflected from the target. The detector detects a combination of the reflected beam and a reference beam comprising another split beam, wherein the reflected beam and the reference beam have unequal delays. The signal processor obtains velocity information from the combined beam by use of Doppler-shifted harmonics of the modulation frequency.

Abstract: A method and system for simulating games of chance using cards are disclosed using a shuffler to shuffle a set of cards and dispensing one or more cards. Current regulations prohibit certain game operators from using certain games such as traditional craps and roulette. By simulating those games with cards, operators can still provide players with games they recognize and thereby develop excitement and new gaming alternatives for their players, as well as draw new players to such games through their familiarity with the indicia on the cards.
Abstract: The index of refraction of waveguide structures can be varied by altering carrier concentration. The waveguides preferably comprise semiconductors like silicon that are substantially optically transmissive at certain wavelengths. Variation of the carrier density in these semiconductors may be effectuated by inducing an electric field within the semiconductor for example by apply a voltage to electrodes associated with the semiconductor. Variable control of the index of refraction may be used to implement a variety of functionalites including, but not limited to, tunable waveguide gratings and resonant cavities, switchable couplers, modulators, and optical switches.
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention described herein relate to antibodies directed to the antigen monocyte chemo-attractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and uses of such antibodies. In particular, in accordance with some embodiments, there are provided fully human monoclonal antibodies directed to the antigen MCP-1. Nucelotide sequences encoding, and amino acid sequences comprising, heavy and light chain immunoglobulin molecules, particularly sequences corresponding to contiguous heavy and light chain sequences spanning the framework regions and/or complementarity determining regions (CDRs), specifically from FR1 through FR4 or CDR1 through CDR3, are provided. Hybridomas or other cell lines expressing such immunoglobulin molecules and monoclonal antibodies are also provided.

Abstract: An operation control system for a planing boat can include a mode selection module configured to allow a driver to select a driving mode of either one of a normal operation mode, in which the boat cruises at a speed in response to the displacement of an acceleration controller, and a speed-fixing mode, in which the boat cruises at a fixed speed at a level when a speed-fixing controller is operated. The system can also include a planing condition determination module configured to determine whether a hull is at the stage of planing, in which the mode selection module is configured to prohibit the driving mode from switching to the speed-fixing mode if the planing condition determination module determines that the hull is not at the stage of planning. The mode selection module can also be configured to permit the driving mode to switch to the speed-fixing mode if the planing condition determination module determines that the hull is at the stage of planing.
Abstract: A process for producing dimethyl ether, which includes dehydrating methanol in vapor phase in the presence of an activated alumina catalyst having an average pore radius of 2.5 nm to 8.0 nm both inclusive and having a sodium oxide content of 0.07 wt % or less. This invention provides a process for producing DME with an improved conversion ratio using a highly active DME-production catalyst.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for preventing and treating septicemia in patient blood is provided. The extracorporeal system includes an antimicrobial device to inactivate at least 99% of bloodborne microorganisms, a hemoconcentrator/filtration unit to remove approximately 50–75% of target molecules from the patient blood and a filter unit to remove target molecules from patient blood from the sieved plasma filtrate. Target molecules are produced by microorganisms, as well as by the patient's cells. These molecules include endotoxins from Gram negative bacteria, exotoxins from Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria, as well as RAP protein mediator from Staphylococcus aureus, and cell mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin 1-beta, interleukin 6, complement proteins C3a and C5a, and bradykinin.

Abstract: A method is described for the early detection of stroke which uses a reagent which includes a fluorescently modified fatty acid binding protein. A fluorescence difference is noted between the bound and unbound condition. Elevated levels of unbound free fatty acids from blood are used as indicators of stroke.
Abstract: Wafers in a cassette are mapped without having to open the cassette. The cassette is at least partially transparent to a particular type of radiation. A source of the radiation is directed into the cassette, through a transparent or translucent part of the cassette, and an imaging sensor sensitive to the radiation detects radiation that is reflected off the wafers inside the cassette. A second source of radiation and a second camera preferably provide additional images of the wafers from a different angle. By processing these images, the spatial orientation of the wafers and loading status of the cassette can be determined.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for creating high speed logic circuits in a CMOS environment using current steering logic cells with actively-peaked NMOS or PMOS loads and the biasing of these logic cells is disclosed. The logic cells can include, for example, buffers, AND gates, OR gates, flip-flops, and latches. The current steering cells with actively-peaked loads can provide benefits such as reduced power consumption, smaller area, and higher speed performance over conventional devices. This performance boost is preferably achieved using NMOS followers with resistively degenerated gates to create frequency peaked transfer function of current-mode logic cells. These logic cells with actively-peaked loads can advantageously be used in circuits in which relatively good power area and performance are desired for state machine logic, parallel to serial conversions, serial to parallel conversions, and the like.

Abstract: An implantable device for stabilizing joints is provided. The stabilizing device, or implant, includes an elongated body and at least two bone cutting surfaces. The bone cutting surfaces are adapted to cut bone upon rotation of the body about its longitudinal axis between two bones. The device is adapted to promote bone fusion. In one embodiment, a device to initiate bony fusion between two adjacent vertebral bodies in the spine is provided. Methods of stabilizing joints and promoting bone fusion are also provided.
Abstract: A communication system comprising three communication resources: a contention-type access block, a non-contention access block and a second non-contention access block called a reserved block. Each time that a remote unit has a block of data to transfer to a hub station, it sends the block of data over the contention-type access block. It also sends a corresponding notification message over the reserved block. If the hub station receives the notification message but not the block of data, it sends a response message to the remote unit which designates a resource within the non-contention access block. The remote unit then sends the block of data to the hub station over the designated resource.

The transmission has a primary sheave and a secondary sheave that are connected by a flexible transmitter such as a belt. The primary sheave, the secondary sheave and the belt are positioned in a transmission case. A starting kick shaft is positioned on the same side of the engine unit as the transmission case but the starting kick shaft is positioned outside of a profile of the transmission case when the engine unit is viewed from a lateral side.
Abstract: Methods are provided for treating germanium surfaces in preparation for subsequent deposition, particularly gate dielectric deposition by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Prior to depositing, the germanium surface is treated with plasma products or thermally reacted with vapor reactants. Examples of surface treatments leave oxygen bridges, nitrogen bridges, —OH, —NH and/or —NH2 terminations that more readily adsorb ALD reactants. The surface treatments avoid deep penetration of the reactants into the germanium bulk but improve nucleation.
