Abstract: A medical article securement device holds a medical article in position upon the body of a patient and can be used to inhibit lateral and longitudinal motion of the medical article. The securement device includes a retainer with a base and at least one post, and at least one cap. The cap is attached to the base of the retainer by a flexible connection, and can be placed into either a covered or uncovered configuration with respect to the post. The cap includes a recess which can receive a protrusion at the end of the post of the retainer. By placing the post through an appropriate opening in the medical article to be retained and then securing the medical article to the retainer by placing the cap into the covered position over the post, longitudinal and lateral motion of the medical article is inhibited.
Abstract: A number plate is provided comprising a body having an indicating portion and an elongated band extending from the number plate body. The band has a wrapping portion to be wrapped around a handlebar of a straddle type vehicle. An engagement portion is formed on a base of the elongated band to engage with a control cable. Engaging the control cable in the engagement portion in this manner can increase the mounting rigidity of the number plate.
Abstract: A system and method for remotely regulating the power consumption of a device are provided. The method comprises sending a message from a remote location and over a wide area data network to a controller locally attached to a device. The method further comprises adjusting, at the controller, the power supplied to the device based on the message.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for mixed enclave operation of a computer network with users employing a multi-level network security interface and users without any network security interface. Either the network security user selects or the network security interface automatically selects whether communications are permissible with other unsecured users. Where a mixed enclave operation is selected, the network security user identifies when communications are being undertaken with another secured user or a non-secured user. Communications with a non-secured user at a lower security level entail securing the data residing with the secured user from transmission back to the non-secured user.

Abstract: A method and system for recognizing alphabetic characters that contain diacritics is described. An image analysis separates the character into its constituent components. The one or more diacritic components are then distinguished and isolated from the base portion of the character. Optical recognition is performed separately on the base portion. The diacritic is recognized through a special image analysis and pattern recognition algorithms. The image analysis extracts geometric information from the one or more diacritic components. The extracted information is used as input for the pattern recognition algorithms. The output is a code that corresponds to a particular diacritic. The recognized base portion and diacritic are combined and a check is performed for acceptable combinations in a chosen language. By separately recognizing the base portion and diacritic, the character sets used by the recognizer can be narrowed, resulting in greater recognition.
Abstract: This invention describes a rapid (10 to 15 minutes), simple, flexible and efficient method of nucleic acids extraction for nucleic acid testing assays. This method has the following basic steps: i) mechanical cell lysis using solid particles in the presence of a chelating agent, followed by ii) controlling the presence and/or activity of NAT assays inhibitors. This method is applicable to various biological samples and universal for microorganisms, as one can use it to extract nucleic acids from test samples containing target viruses, bacteria, bacterial spores, fungi, parasites or other eukaryotic cells, including animal and human cells.
Abstract: A method is provided for heating a substrate in a process chamber using a heated chuck. In accordance with the method, the substrate is lowered onto the chuck and heated to a first temperature less than a temperature of the chuck. The substrate is then raised away from the chuck, and a process is carried out on the substrate while the substrate is supported above the chuck. The substrate is then lowered back to the chuck and heated to a second temperature greater than the first temperature for further processing of the substrate.

Abstract: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals are detected in microtesla fields. Prepolarization in millitesla fields is followed by detection with an untuned dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Because the sensitivity of the SQUID is frequency independent, both signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spectral resolution are enhanced by detecting the NMR signal in extremely low magnetic fields, where the NMR lines become very narrow even for grossly inhomogeneous measurement fields. MRI in ultralow magnetic field is based on the NMR at ultralow fields. Gradient magnetic fields are applied, and images are constructed from the detected NMR signals.

Abstract: A synchronizer clutch for a motor vehicle multistep transmission, having a guide sleeve which is fixedly arranged on a shaft, and a synchronizer ring which is mounted so as to be moveable relative to the guide sleeve. The guide sleeve has an axial contact face which an axial face of the synchronizer ring can abut against when the latter is in a rest position. At least one of the axial contact face and the axial face has at least one depression which is not significant in terms of the general function of the synchronizer clutch, but reduces the contact area between the axial contact face and the axial face in the rest position. Thus, when the synchronizer ring moves axially away from the guide sleeve, there is essentially no adhesion on account of lubricating oil.
