  • Patent number: 4154189
Abstract: A manually operated release and test apparatus is disclosed for use with mechanically powered protection devices. A spring powered fire alarm, for example, is triggered either by exposure of its sensitive fusing element to a predetermined temperature, or by complete physical removal of the sensitive fusing element from the device. The release and test apparatus of this invention is a lever mounted on the alarm device for the consistent removal of the fuse assembly for testing the alarm while avoiding inflicting any damage thereto. This apparatus facilitates the testing and demonstration of the alarm device, without modifying the aesthetic appearance of the alarm. Also disclosed is a chain attachment which permits a remote force to be directly applied to the release lever so as to provide a release and test means for manual activation of the alarm in emergency situations.

  • Patent number: 4155073
Abstract: A line monitoring system is disclosed which provides particular advantages to security systems having remote terminals. This system provides both a reduction in the required power for the line monitoring task and also increases the level of line security by generating a calculated response at the remote terminal, which calculated response could not be accidentally produced by a faulty remote unit. Futhermore, the calculated response at the remote unit greatly reduces the likelihood of clandestine entry at the remote site.

  • Patent number: 4152784
Abstract: A fabric garment which automatically removes unwanted hair while being worn against the skin of the user. The garment is coated with a pressure sensitive microencapsulated depilatory agent. Pressure exerted by a hair stubble against the fabric causes the microencapsulation to rupture and dispense the depilatory agent in a small localized area around the hair follicle. The depilatory agent dissolves the hair stubble without irritating the user's skin.

  • Patent number: 4151991
Abstract: A billiard cue chalk cube holder, having a base plate mountable on a flat surface by screws, nails, or the like, is provided with a lockable cover which is internally partitioned to form one or more chalk cube receptacles. The cover has an internal latch which is rotatable by a key to alternately engage and disengage slots in the legs of a U-shaped member attached to the base plate. When the cover is attached to the base plate, the nails or screws securing the base plate to the supporting surface are completely concealed, thereby discouraging theft of the chalk cubes.

  • Patent number: 4149650
Abstract: A storage container for maintaining the sterilized condition of instruments or other articles. The container has a receiving tray and a lid with a unique sealing element that not only provides an excellent seal but also enhances the seating of the lid on the tray portion. Means are placed adjacent the interface of the lid with the tray for holding the lid above the tray during the sterilization process and for releasing the lid to seat in sealing engagement with the tray after the sterilization process. Mounted within the container is a combination relief and release valve to respectively control the amount of vacuum within the container and to release the vacuum in order to allow access to the interior of the container to remove the instruments or articles therein.

  • Patent number: 4146006
Abstract: A circuit is described for a multiple cylinder engine which permits operation of all of the engine cylinders or a part thereof in response to engine loads. Different operating modes, incorporating different numbers of cylinders, are activated in a fuel injection engine in response to varying power demands. Manual switching circuits on the dashboard of the automobile permit the driver to override the automatic system and require that the engine operate in any of its operating modes. When operating in partial modes, a circuit automatically rotates the cylinder banks which are operated to assure uniform engine wear and cooling. Switches are provided on the dashboard to permit the operator to selectively skip certain engine modes in the automatic, load-responsive sequencing of engine operation.

  • Patent number: 4144936
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for milling metal submerged in salt water or within a hole, such as cutting off the upper ends of pipes and casings in a well-drilling operation below the sea floor. A hydraulic motor is suspended in the hole and driven by sea water to rotate an electrical generator and to rotate a cutting tool. The tool includes radially movable, electrically conductive elements which form the cathodes of an electrochemical machining operation for removing metal. The tool elements include abrasive material so that they can mechanically cut through cement.

  • Patent number: 4144555
Abstract: A combination of a potentiometer and an integrated circuit module are mounted on a printed circuit board which interconnects these members and provides for external connections. Mechanical mounting of the printed circuit board, the potentiometer, and the integrated circuit module is provided by a single mounting bushing of the potentiometer. The mounting arrangement also permits a heat sink tab on the integrated circuit to be clamped by this mounting bushing directly against the front panel of a user's equipment. Thus, the single mechanical mounting connection for the combination at the potentiometer bushing not only mechanically mounts all of the elements but additionally provides a heat sink connection for the circuit. At the same time, the use of the printed circuit board in this combination permits automated assembly and soldering which substantially reduces the cost of the circuit.

  • Patent number: 4138288
Abstract: A blood oxygenator includes a heat exchanger wherein heat transfer fluid flows through a tube which is ribbed along its length. The tube is positioned within a chamber connected in an extracorporeal blood circuit such that the blood is caused to flow over the exterior surface of the ribbed tube. In the preferred embodiment, the blood flows through a plurality of continuous, restricted area flow paths offering substantially uniform flow impedance to the blood, these restricted flow paths being provided by constructing the tube with an integral, substantially continuous, hollow, helical rib, and by forming the helically ribbed tube in a helical configuration mounted between an inner cylindrical column and an outer cylindrical shell such that the blood is caused to flow through the plural paths of restricted cross-sectional area provided by the helical flute.
