  • Patent number: 4220846
Abstract: A body of a specially prepared, porous vitreous carbon which does not crack or substantially change in electrical resistance with time when heated to elevated temperatures in air and which is used in a method or apparatus to heat a fluid stream flowing in the pores of the body as a result of natural convection or pumping of the fluid is described. The body is composed of electrically conductive rigid, interconnected and multidirectional continuous strands of vitreous carbon forming a rigid porous, three dimensional skeletal structure. The body as an electrical resistance element has current conductive paths between at least two regions; is shaped to provide particular cross-sections along the conductive paths; and has electrical connector means attached at the regions of the body so that current can be distributed through the body.

  • Patent number: 4220565
Abstract: Techniques for preparing stable conjugates of protein-D-GL which can then be isolated in pure form are disclosed, using hen egg ovalbumin (OVA) as a prototype protein, and conjugation and purification methods are described which involve (1) application of a coupling method employing m-maleimidobenzoyl-N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (MBS) as the coupling reagent, and (2) introduction of biotin moieties into D-GL molecules to allow application of avidinbiotin system for affinity chromatographic purification of conjugates. These methods are applicable to the preparation of D-GL conjugates of insulin and Ragweed Antigen E and are of general applicability.

  • Patent number: 4219298
Abstract: A side loading refuse collection truck is equipped with apparatus for lifting containers from the ground at a random lateral distance from the side of the truck, elevating these containers above a refuse collection compartment of the truck and there inverting the container to allow the discharge through gravity of the refuse from the container to the truck. Thereafter, the apparatus permits replacement of the container alongside the truck at precisely the location where the container was first lifted, at the same random lateral distance from the side of the truck. The apparatus is conveniently operated by a single operator without manual handling of the container and is adapted to fit in narrow alleyways and roadways without protruding apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4218690
Abstract: A security system is disclosed which utilizes plural remote terminals for controlling access at plural locations throughout a secured area or building. Each of these remote terminals is capable of independent functioning, and includes a memory for storing plural independent identification numbers which define the personnel who will be granted access. These numbers stored in the terminal memories may be different from terminal to terminal, or may be uniform throughout the system, and may be the same as a list stored at a central processing location. Thus, access may be limited to the same group of individuals regardless of whether it is provided by a central memory list or a remote memory list. The remote memories provide total memory flexibility, so that the deletion of identification numbers from the list does not reduce the memory size.

  • Patent number: 4215857
Abstract: An athlete's landing pit, particularly useful as a landing surface for high jumpers and pole-vaulters, is formed through the side-by-side arrangement of plural foam logs. The individual logs are shaped to provide air spaces within the foam structure to lend resilience to the landing surface. The individual logs of foam are not necessarily glued to each other but may be simply arranged side-by-side and placed within a fabric covering which is used to maintain the arrangement of the logs. The individual logs are therefore easily stored and replaceable individually. In addition, the individual logs within the landing pit structure may be placed at different locations each time the landing pit is constructed in order to avoid excessive wear on any individual log element.

  • Patent number: 4211348
Abstract: A spigot for dispensing the liquid contents of a container having a filling and dispensing spout adjacent the bottom thereof comprising an integral elastomeric member of generally cup shape having a peripheral wall complementary to and adapted to fit within and seal against the inner surface of the spout axially inwardly of the lip of the spout, a transverse wall at the inner end of said peripheral wall for closing off the spigot and the spout, and a manipulatable lever on said transverse wall for flexing said transverse wall and a portion of said peripheral wall to move said portion of said peripheral wall radially inwardly away from the spout to permit the dispensing of the contents of the container, said walls automatically and resiliently snapping back into their spout sealing positions upon release of said manipulatable means.

  • Patent number: 4209909
Abstract: Styluses defining a hinge axis in a dental articulator are received in guide block pathways defined by side walls and a curved upper wall. The blocks are rotatably mounted to vary the slope of the upper wall. A supply of guide blocks is provided having a medial wall with a rear curved portion which varies for different blocks based on average values. The user selects the blocks having the desired medial wall to provide the desired side shift. In one arrangement, the side walls are formed as a unit and removeably mounted on the upper wall and the user selects the side wall unit from a supply of units providing different degrees of side shift movement. In another form, the medial wall is transversely adjustable.

  • Patent number: 4207958
Abstract: This invention provides a safety arrangement for a dumping vehicle which may include a bumper movable to energize a brake actuator, the bumper being retractable upon tilting of the dumping bed. Modified bumper mounting arrangements are provided for various kinds of vehicles. A latching relay may be included to cause the brake actuator to hold the brakes locked, irrespective of disengagement of the obstruction. The bumper may include a pneumatic chamber with a flexible wall, with a pressure-operated switch for operating the brake actuator. Also, an exteriorly actuated switch may be used in a two-man operation in lieu of a bumper.

  • Patent number: 4201179
Abstract: A modification to a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine to automatically restrict the flow of fuel to one group of the cylinders during a first phase of operation in response to a specified vacuum level generated by the operation of the other group of cylinders. In the first phase of operation, all fuel is blocked from entering the inactive second group of cylinders by a modified valving mechanism in the carburetor. In one embodiment of the invention, it is used in conjunction with throttle valve controls for each of the groups of cylinders, blocking not only fuel to the inactive group of cylinders, but also the flow of air to the inactive group.

  • Patent number: 4197940
Abstract: A circular cake tray and cover contains a cake mounted on a plate. The cake is prevented from sliding within the container by means of matching surface features on the tray and on the cake plate which mutually nest to lock the plate into place on top of the tray. The depth of the surface features is sufficient to prevent movement of the plate with respect to the tray even when the tray is tilted to a substantial angle, thereby reducing the likelihood that the cake plate would slide when the container is tilted and damage the cake by impact with the cover. The tray and cover are removably fastened together with a continuous outer flange on the circumference of the cover resiliently latched beneath a plurality of horizontal flanges which are disposed along the edge of the tray in such a manner that the cover may be easily latched or removed from the tray without regard to the rotational orientation of the cover with respect to the tray.

  • Patent number: 4197602
Abstract: A waterbed frame is formed of side rails having inner rigid support elements surrounded by resilient cushion material. All sides of the frame may be formed by such rails with the rigid elements being connected at the corners, so that the rigid elements are in effect floating in the cushion material. Alternatively, two such side rails may be attached to more conventional appearing foot and head boards.
