  • Patent number: 7845426
Abstract: When the mode change knob of a multi-mode hammer drill is moved to the hammer only position, an electronic sensor sends a signal to a control logic circuit. When the user then depresses the trigger mechanically closing the ON/OFF switch, the control logic circuit applies a voltage either to a holding relay or to the gate of a triac which enables the relay or triac to conduct, thus providing a parallel circuit by-passing the ON/OFF switch. Consequently, when the user releases the trigger and opens the ON/OFF switch, the parallel relay or triac maintains current flow to the motor. It can be seen that in hammer only mode the user can activate the hammer drill by simply tapping the trigger to depress it and does not need to hold down trigger during use of the hammer in operation.

  • Patent number: 7818880
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a ram configured to be mounted for reciprocation in a guide tube section of a powered hammer. The ram includes an outer circumferential surface, a radially outwardly projecting sealing portion, and a helically shaped vent channel defined in the circumferential surface and running from a front end portion of the circumferential surface to a rear end portion of the circumferential surface and being interrupted by the sealing portion. The method includes forming the outer circumferential surface of the ram and the helically shaped vent channel in a single manufacturing operation. For example, the method includes rotating a blank on a machine tool, forming the outer circumferential surface of the ram by applying a first machine tool bit to the blank while the blank is rotating, and forming the helically shaped vent channel in the outer circumferential surface by applying a second machine tool bit to the blank while the blank is rotating, without removing the blank from the machine tool.

  • Patent number: 7814986
Abstract: A powered hammer includes a housing, a tool holder coupled to the housing and configured to hold a tool, a motor within the housing, a cylinder disposed within the housing, and a piston slideably mounted within the cylinder. A drive mechanism converts rotary output of the motor into a reciprocating motion of the piston. The drive mechanism includes a crank shaft rotationally driven by the motor, a drive pin eccentrically mounted on the crank shaft, and a con rod with a first end connected to the drive pin and a second end connected to the piston. A ram is slideably mounted forward of the piston that is reciprocatingly driven by the piston. A beat piece is slideably mounted forward of the ram. The beat piece is repetitively struck by the reciprocating ram, which in turn repetitively strikes an end of the tool when held in the tool holder to transfer the momentum of the ram to the tool. Lubrication fluid covers at least part of the drive mechanism.

  • Patent number: 7789168
Abstract: The disclosure describes a handle assembly for a power tool that includes attachment means for attaching the assembly to a housing of a power tool. The handle means is adapted to be held by a user of the power tool and the handle means is mounted to the attachment means and is capable of limited movement relative to the housing of the power tool. The vibration damping means acts between said housing and said handle means. The vibration damping means can also comprise elastomeric material. The attachment means can be mounted in use to the housing via a bolt on one of the attachment means and the housing passing through a respective aperture in the other of said attachment means and the housing. At least some of the elastomeric material is arranged in use between at least one said bolt and a corresponding said aperture. The handle means can be pivotable and/or slidable relative to said attachment means. The vibration damping means can comprise at least one spring (e.g., compression/spring or torsion spring).

  • Patent number: 7762348
Abstract: A power tool has a handle capable of limited movement mounted to its housing. An axle is rotatably connected to the housing and is movable between a first and second positions and is spring biased towards the first position. Arms are connected to and rotate with the axle. Connectors are slidably mounted within guides and are connected at one end to the arms and at the other end to the handle. Vibrations in the body of the power tool cause movement of one end of the handle, which causes movement of a connector and in turn movement of an arm. Movement of the arm causes rotation of the axle which therefore causes movement of the other arm. This in turn causes the related connector to slide within its guide and move the other end of handle. Thus, movement of one end of the handle is coupled to the other end.

  • Patent number: 7743846
Abstract: A rotary spindle 4 for a power tool such as a hammer drill is disclosed. The spindle 4 comprises a first spindle part 402 for rotation about its longitudinal an axis by means of a motor and having an inwardly directed rim 406, and a second spindle part 404 for supporting a drill bit of the hammer drill and having an outwardly directed rim 410. The second spindle part 404 extends through an aperture 408 in the first spindle part 402 and rims 406, 410 cooperate with each other to prevent removal of the second spindle part 404 from the first spindle part 402. A circlip 414 locks the first and second spindle parts 402, 404 together and maintains o-rings 412 under compression.

  • Patent number: 7726413
Abstract: A tool holder for a powered hammer includes a tool holder housing. An actuator is coupled to the tool holder housing and is moveable among a range of operating positions that include a first position where the actuator locks a tool within the tool holder by engaging a rib on the tool, a second position where the actuator locks a tool within the tool holder by engaging a recess in the tool, and a third position where the actuator allows a tool to be released from the tool holder. An actuator locking mechanism releasably locks the actuator in at least the third position.

  • Patent number: 7721819
Abstract: A rotary hammer includes a housing, a tool holder mounted on a front portion of the housing, and a motor mounted in the housing. The motor includes an armature shaft arranged substantially perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the tool holder and including toothing. A hammer mechanism is driven by the motor to generate impacts on a tool being held by the tool holder. The hammer mechanism includes a first intermediate shaft adjacent and substantially parallel to the armature shaft facing away from the tool holder. A rotation drive mechanism is driven by the motor to rotatingly drive a tool being held by the tool holder. The rotation drive mechanism includes a second intermediate shaft adjacent and substantially parallel to the armature shaft facing the tool holder. The toothing of the armature shaft meshes with corresponding toothing on at least one of the first intermediate shaft and the second intermediate shaft.

  • Patent number: 7721450
Abstract: The present invention provides a blade clamp for an electrically powered reciprocating saw. The clamp is arranged to eliminate, or at least reduce, misalignment of a blade during use with the cut direction and the longitudinal axis of a jigsaw. Thus, so-called “crabbing” of the jigsaw can be reduced, thereby increasing the accuracy with which an operator can use the jigsaw. This is achieved by modifying the blade retaining pin such that it comprises a radial protrusion which engages with or locates in a cooperating groove disposed on the clamp body. Arranging the groove and protrusion to have an engagement surface (as opposed to a point of contact) further improves on lateral stability of the pin with respect to a reciprocating shaft of the saw.

  • Patent number: 7705497
Abstract: A power tool cooling system comprises a cooling fan disposed on a motor in a position between the upper field coil and the lower commutator. A transmission housing encapsulates the transmission mechanism. During operation, the fan is driven by the motor and draws air axially through the motor and expels the air radially outwardly through holes in the outer housing of the motor. This causes air to be drawn in through the air vents formed on the top of a tool housing, in the side of the housing and between the housing and a battery pack. The cool air flows outside of the transmission housing, but inside the tool housing such that air does not pass through the transmission mechanism. A plurality of motor openings are also formed in the outer housing of the motor to enable cool air to pass into the motor to cool the motor.
