Abstract: A method of field annealing a thin-film electromagnetic read/write head formed of magnetic-field-responsive material having a known Curie temperature. Such a head also includes an electric coil for operatively exciting the head. The method includes the steps of heating the head to a temperature less than the Curie temperature, and then cooling the head while applying electric current to the coil sufficient to induce magnetic flux in the head. The foregoing steps, properly applied, align the magnetic-field-responsive structure, such as magnetic domains in a soft magnetic material, in the direction of operative flux flow in the head.

Abstract: Apparatus for use in replacing a mounted endless chain which connects a pair of sprockets, where one of the sprockets has an exposed portion facing away from the other sprocket. The apparatus includes a holder and a pair of spaced, confronting chain-abutments carried on the frame plate, adapted to contact a pair of spaced regions of the chain, where such is trained over the exposed sprocket portion. An opening formed between the two members is adapted to receive the two disconnected end portions of a replacement chain. Chain support means are provided to support a replacement chain.
Abstract: Orthopedic surgical guide apparatus for guiding the coaxial drilling of two different-diameter bores required for the insertion of repair hardware used in the mending of a broken bone. The apparatus includes a first, planar guide element which a surgeon uses throughout a procedure, and a second, generally cylindrical guide element employed during the first part of a procedure. The first guide element includes a large-diameter guide bore sized to guide a surgical reamer. The second guide element includes a body portion sized to fit removably in such larger-diameter guide bore, and also include a central, small-diameter guide bore which is coaxial with the large-diameter bore with the two guide elements assembled. The small-diameter guide bore is sized to guide a surgical guide pin (drill).
Abstract: A bushing-sleeve combination for a vibration-isolating mounting. The bushing takes the form of a resilient, generally cylindrically shaped elastomer having a uniform-diameter axial bore. A hollow, cylindrical metal sleeve is fixed within the bore. The bushing includes an outwardly radiating flange portion adjacent one end of a cylindrical body portion, and an outside-surface-tapered portion joined to the other end of the body portion. When mounted in place, the bushing is compressed axially, and under this circumstance, the unique differential-diameter characteristics of the body portion and the tapered portion cause the tapered portion, and the lower part of the body portion, to flare and bulge outwardly in a manner seating the bushing-sleeve combination so as to assure maximum-performance behavior.
Abstract: A multi-electrode plasma source for maintaining a plasma loop for heating a stream of sample material traveling along a predetermined path through the loop. Included is at least one set of at least three spaced-apart electrodes having tips circumferentially distributed about such a stream path. Voltages are applied to the electrodes and plasma gas is directed into the region of the tips. The tip distribution, voltages and plasma gas flow are appropriate to generate electrical plasma generally surrounding the path.
Abstract: An anti-fouling air intake stack for use on an agricultural combine which is equipped with a swingable rotary screen air filter basket. The air intake stack provides an elevated air intake which is of greater elevation above ground level than the normal air intake and which draws cooling air for the engine, hydraulic and air conditioning components of the combine from a height which is relatively debris-free while allowing unimpaired access to the combine engine compartment.
Abstract: A template for marking batters' and catcher's boxes of a ball diamond in conformance with league or other standard regulations. Included is a rectangular frame with dimensions having a preselected relationship to the two types of boxes, an index arm for positioning the frame relative to a home plate for marking a batters' box, and indicia on the frame for locating a catcher's box relative to the previously marked batters' box. Optionally, the frame and index arm dimensions are adjustable, and plural sets of indicia are provided for marking the two types of boxes in conformance with different standard regulations. Additionally, the template may be collapsible for reducing it into a more compact unit.
