  • Patent number: 6391656
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and reagent kits for the quantitative in vitro determination of the functional determination of multi-drug resistance in cells, as well as for the clinical screening of potential modulators of multi-drug resistant transport activity in cells. The method of the invention is based on the measurement of the accumulation rate of free calcein within the cells of the specimen (advantageously by fluorescence measurement), after exposing the cells in vitro to a cell permeable form of calcein that is a good substrate for MDR proteins present in the sample. The cell permeable form of calcein is converted within the cell by intracellular enzymes to free calcein. Comparison of free calcein accumulation in the presence and absence of a potential inhibitor of transport activity permits the rapid screening of such inhibitors.

  • Patent number: 6363583
Abstract: A tool for tightening a plurality of wire lengths that extend between a first bracing location on a first fence support and a second bracing location on a second fence support, the wire lengths defining an axis extending generally parallel to their lengths. The tool includes a body adapted to be transversely inserted between the wire lengths so that the wire lengths pass around the body. The body has at least one seating portion formed on its outer surface for retaining at least one of the wire lengths generally between the ends of the body when the body is inserted between the wire lengths. The body is adapted so that, when inserted between the wire lengths, the body can be selectively rotated about the axis to twist the wire lengths around one another and thereby exert a contracting force on the fence supports.

  • Patent number: 6269777
Abstract: A locking system for pets. The system includes a locking leash assembly comprising a leash with a pet-securing region and a handle region. The handle region is adapted to be held by a user. The pet-securing region includes a lock assembly having a locked configuration and an unlocked configuration. In the locked configuration the lock assembly is adapted to secure together spaced-apart portions of the pet-securing region, thus defining a closed perimeter. The closed perimeter is sized to extend around a portion of a pet and configured to prevent removal of the leash from the pet. The lock assembly in the unlocked configuration is adapted to permit the release of the spaced-apart portions of the pet-securing region. In some embodiments, the leash includes a coupling structure adapted to be removably interlocked to a pet collar.

  • Patent number: 6242120
Abstract: A system for optimizing the purge cycle of a fuel cell stack responsive to the performance of the fuel cell. The system includes a controller that measures a process parameter indicative of the rate at which water is being produced in the fuel cell. If the measured value exceeds a threshold value, then the purge assembly is automatically actuated.
