  • Patent number: 4063904
Abstract: A self-contained fire package including a container in which fuel elements, such as pieces of wood, are arranged in a special manner to produce controlled, long-time burning of the package. A first plurality of such elements are arranged in stacks extending, as viewed from above, in a generally U-shaped configuration along the back and lateral sides of the container to form a forwardly facing pocket. Tinder material, such as excelsior, along with a second plurality of fuel elements, such as small wood blocks are distributed at random in this pocket. Two swing-out flaps are formed, as by die cutting, in the container, one being directly over, and the other being directly in front of, the pocket. The one in front accommodates insertion of a match or the like to ignite the package. The one over the pocket swings out to form a draft flue.

  • Patent number: 4063980
Abstract: An improved press-fit joint between a pipe, such as a length of pipe forming part of a section of pipeline in an irrigation system, and a pipe coupler used in connecting the ends of adjacent pipeline sections in the system. In forming the joint, a sheathing element of thin gauge material is mounted on an end portion of the pipe. The sheathing element includes a skirt portion which bounds the inner circumference of the pipe, allowing a tubular portion of the coupler to be pressed into the end of the pipe without experiencing the galling which normally occurs when the pipe and coupler are both made of a metal such as aluminum. In addition, the sheathing element may be provided with openings for carrying an adhesive bonding agent into the interface region of the joint. A method of making a joint between a length of pipe and another part such as a coupler.

  • Patent number: 4063719
Abstract: An apparatus for heat treating elongate articles including a furnace arranged above a quenching liquid reservoir and guide elements for guiding heated elongate articles from the furnace into the quenching liquid. In a preferred embodiment, the furnace utilizes a plurality of elongate tubes which receive detachably held elongate articles. Upon release, the elongate articles fall while oriented vertically by the guide elements into the quenching liquid. Warping or bending of the elongate articles is thereby prevented during the transfer from the furnace to the quenching liquid.

  • Patent number: 4045924
Abstract: A roof assemblage for use in a furnace includes a refractory panel dimensioned to span refractory furnace walls and a wall bearing roof truss from which the refractory roof panel is suspended. The refractory roof panel is suspended by means of hangers which are connected to a bottom chord of the truss and to suspension bars which extend transversely of the roof panel. The truss is arranged intermediate of the width of the refractory roof panel and the bottom chord is situated on bearing anchors which connect the bottom chord at opposite ends thereof to the top of the refractory wall panels. Lifting hooks are provided on the top chord of the truss so that the truss-panel roof assemblage may be lifted as a unit onto and from the furnace walls.

  • Patent number: 4045004
Abstract: Apparatus for commingling liquid chemicals includes a mixing tank having a drain valve and a liquid container impaling head for piercing a container impressed thereon so that the container's liquid chemical contents will flow into the tank. A pump is operatively connected to the tank for transporting liquid such as water from an external supply into the tank. The pump is also operable for continuously recirculating liquid from the tank and back thereinto so as to commingle the liquid from the supply and the container. The pump's inlet is also connected to a second liquid supply so that liquid from a barrel or drum may be withdrawn therefrom and mixed in the tank. An extendible-contractible member is slidably arranged within a conduit to permit the contents of the barrel or drum to be substantially evacuated.

  • Patent number: 4041839
Abstract: A multistage, extensible-contractible hydraulic ram assembly for use in conjunction with a triple-lift-type mast in a lift truck. The assembly is designed for mounting in such a truck in a so-called inverted position. It is constructed with special, externally actuated, internal valving which, through controlling the action of pressure fluid within the assembly, assures positive control over the sequence of movements of the sections in a mast as such are raised and lowered, without requiring latching and interlocking of these sections. Further, the assembly features the capability of producing substantially uniform or constant lifting and lowering speeds for a load which is carried on the usual carriage mounted on a mast of the type indicated.

  • Patent number: 4038899
Abstract: Apparatus for turning a strobe wheel to assist in tuning a musical instrument. The apparatus features side-by-side rotary shafts, including a driving shaft and a driven shaft--the former having uniform outside diameter along its length, and the latter having a taper along its length which taper is based on the mathematical formula that determines the intervals between successive notes in such an instrument. The driving wheel is turned at selected substantially constant speeds. The driven shaft is turned through an endless band which couples the shafts. The latter-mentioned shaft is intended for driving a strobe wheel.

  • Patent number: 4038769
Abstract: A portable sign holder including a generally upright sign support and a collapsible base to which the sign support is connected. The base includes a pair of elongate leg members pivotally mounted for swinging about horizontal axes between support positions extending outwardly to opposite sides of the sign support and collapsed positions extending upwardly adjacent opposite faces of the sign support. Releasable locking devices hold the legs in their support positions, extending at low angles from the horizontal whereby their outer ends contact the ground with their inner ends slightly elevated. The sign support is connected to the base by a resilient mounting which permits movement of the sign support relative to the base upon a force being applied thereto.

  • Patent number: 4039351
Abstract: A removable washer attachment providing a closed system for use in washing containers such as chemical or pesticide drums including an insert secured to a formed opening in one wall of the container. The insert has a first portion extending exteriorly of the container, a second portion depending interiorly of the container, and a bore extending axially therethrough for receiving a suction tube. The insert is fluid-tight sealingly engaged with the formed opening. Another seal is provided between the bore and a suction tube inserted therein. When it is desired to wash material from a container, washing fluid is admitted into the bore and is channeled through passages into curved notches disposed in a lower segment of the interiorly depending portion. The washing fluid is sprayed upwardly and contacts the inside top and side walls of the container or a disposable bag if the container utilizes such. Residue material is washed downwardly to the bottom of the container where it is removed through the suction tube.

  • Patent number: 4039011
Abstract: A circular saw adapted to produce chip-size material when cutting wood. The saw comprises a saw blade with teeth distributed about the circumference of the blade. The teeth are separated from each other in such a manner that in cutting a kerf, wood material is chiseled away in relatively large chip size, and such material is permitted to fall away from the kerf with minimal tendency of crushing or fracturing which would reduce the chip size.

  • Patent number: 4038864
Abstract: Apparatus and method relating to the monitoring of a gas supply to determine the level of certain gas constituents in the supply. There is disclosed a method of monitoring air to determine the hydrocarbon content thereof exclusive of methane. Air is fed through a cold trap maintained at a temperature which produces condensation of the higher hydrocarbons normally found in ambient air at an urban location. Methane, however, passes through the trap. From the cold trap the air is directed to an analyzer, which continuously analyzes the air for hydrocarbon content. Air having all original hydrocarbons is fed the analyzer during intervals interspersed with intervals when the air fed the analyzer has had higher hydrocarbons removed. By comparing the hydrocarbon content of the two types of air, one is enabled to determine the content in such air of hydrocarbons exclusive of methane.

  • Patent number: 4034964
Abstract: A fluidic mixer for commingling fluidic materials including a conduit having a first end and a second end which loosely receives an elongate spiral rod. The spiral rod is formed with a core extending axially and substantially the length of the rod to define a closed center. Multiple helical flights are integrally joined to the core and have peripheral diameters dimensioned less than the inside diameter of the conduit. Notches are provided in alternate peripheral edges of the helical flights so that fluidic materials introduced in the conduit may travel in a spiral path defined by the helical flights, a path between the peripheral diameter and the inside conduit diameter and a path across the notches to thereby effect continuous and complete commingling of the fluidic materials.
