Abstract: Disclosed is a process for producing reactive cellulose for use in the manufacture of cellulose acetate having superior clarity by mercerizing hardwood cellulosic material and reacting it with an hydroxyalkylating agent to a degree of molar substitution ranging from 0.04 to 0.15 per anhydroglucose unit in cellulose.
Abstract: A heterogeneous liquid-phase process for the hydrogenation of aldehydes of Formula (I) and (III) to the corresponding alcohols of Formula (II) and (IV) which process comprises contacting alcoholic or aqueous-alcoholic solution of aldehydes and hydrogen gas with a catalyst comprising a reduced mixture of CuO and ZnO in presence of a metal of group IIIA of the Periodic Table, such as aluminium, as a promoter at a temperature of between about 110° and 180° C. and a pressure of between about 20 and 500 psig.

Abstract: Lower hydrocarbons are converted to carboxylic acids and/or dehydrogenated hydrocarbon product by contacting a feed mixture containing lower hydrocarbons, oxygen source, diluent, and sulfur-containing compound, with a multifunctional, mixed metal catalyst at a temperature from about 150° C. up to about 400° C. The lower hydrocarbons include C2-C4, and the presence of sulfur compound in the feed mixture results in increased yield of carboxylic acid and/or dehydrogenated hydrocarbon product.
Abstract: All improved ophthalmic mounting arrangement for a unitary removable eyeglass lens, together with an eyeglass frame for supporting said lens, is described. The face of the eyeglass frame is equipped with a pair inwardly facing tabbed projections each having a channel for inserting an edge of the unitary lens. The outer periphery of the lens containing notches which interlockingly engage the tabbed projections, such that the lens can be releasably mounted on the eyeglass frame by flexing the lens and inserting the lens notches into the channels in the tabbed projections.
