    Abstract: A microcathode which integrates both an electron emitter, or cathode, and an extractor electrode. The electron emitter is attached to the back side of a thin film microstructure on a first surface of a substrate. Electrons are emitted from the electron emitter and into a via extending through the substrate. An electron beam is formed which is pulled through the via and out of the microcathode by an extractor electrode on a second surface of the substrate. The extractor electrode modulates the electron beam current, defines the beam profile, and accelerates the electrons toward an anode located outside of the microcathode. Microcathode of this invention are particularly suitable as electron emitting devices useful for various types of electron beam utilizing equipment such as flat cathode ray tube displays, microelectronic vacuum tube amplifiers, electron beam exposure devices and the like.

The corrosion sensor can distinguish between different types of corrosion such as uniform corrosion, pitting, crevice, and stress corrosion cracking. The sensor detects corrosion conditions of a corrodible metal article in a corrosive environment. It has a metal probe comprised of a metal which is substantially identical to that of the corrodible metal article and a transducer element attached to said probe, which is capable of projecting and receiving ultrasonic or radio frequency signals through the probe. The received signals indicate corrosion of the probe and hence the corrodible metal article.

    Abstract: An apparatus for and method of rapidly detecting a flame out condition. A thermopile receives heat energy from the flame and generates electrical power to enable operation of a microprocessor. This microprocessor periodically measures the output voltage of the thermopile at one second intervals. An average is taken of eight consecutive samples. A running history of eight averages is stored within a FIFO which serves as a history queue. This FIFO thus stores a digitized signature of the flame condition over the previous 64 seconds. Analysis by the microprocessor is able to make an early detection of the flame out condition be utilizing the current voltage measurement sand the FIFO contents.

    Abstract: A three-dimensional micro-coil situated in a planar substrate. Two wafers have metal strips formed in them, and the wafers are bonded together. The metal strips are connected in such a fashion to form a coil and are encompassed within the wafers. Also, metal sheets are formed on the facing surfaces of the wafers to result in a capacitor. The coil may be a single or multi-turn configuration. It also may have a toroidal design with a core volume created by etching a trench in one of the wafers before the metal strips for the coil are formed on the wafer. The capacitor can be interconnected with the coil to form a resonant circuit. An external circuit for impedance measurement, among other things, and a processor may be connected to the micro-coil chip.

    Abstract: A batch polymerization process controller using inferential sensing to determine the integral reaction heat which in turn is used to indicate the degree of polymerization of the reaction mixture batch. The system uses a reaction temperature compared with a desired temperature, and the result is used as a feedback to monitor and control the process. One version of the process controller also uses a feedforward signal which is an integral reaction heat indication from a process model. In another version of the process controller, the integral reaction heat is compared with a desired integral reaction heat, and result is used as another feedback to monitor and control the process. Heat production and reaction temperature profiles may be used, along with the thermokinetic equations to determine the polymerization process and reactor models which are utilized by the process controller to optimize the polymerization process in terms of efficient use of cooling water and desired polymerization of each mixture batch.

    Abstract: Signal processing methods are disclosed for processing Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) signals. A true Doppler frequency is extracted from the phase noise frequencies by maintaining a highest frequency value. The highest frequency value is replaced with any measured frequency values that are higher than the current highest frequency value. This is continued for a predetermined lifetime period, after which the highest frequency value is stored and then reinitialized. The highest detected frequency values over a window of lifetimes are then averaged to provide a moving or rolling average value which is indicative of the velocity of a medium.

    Abstract: A sampling system for detecting an analyte, comprising a diaphragm pump, a buffer chamber, a sensor head and intake port. The pump includes a chamber for receiving fluids via first and second ports. A buffer chamber is located at the second port for holding a quantity of air, and a sensor head is adapted to identify the presence of a desired analyte and produce a signal in response to the quantity identified. Preferably the diaphragm pump has a volume of gas per stroke capacity slightly larger than the volume of the sensor head such that the pump chamber has a greater volume than the buffer chamber and the buffer chamber has about the same volume as the sensor head. A sensor intake port intakes a sample potentially containing the analyte for contact with the sensor head upon operation of the diaphragm pump and out of the sensor head by jet-action caused by rapid movement of the diaphragm pump. A filter may be used for filtering air drawn through the pump chamber.

A second air stream is then directed through the air treatment module to a location outside of the inside space. The second air stream is preferably heated relative to the first air stream so that at least a portion of the adsorbed water, volatile organic compounds and/or particulate material are desorbed from the desiccant into the second air stream. The second air stream carries the desorbed water, volatile organic compounds and/or particulate material to a location outside the inside space.

The filter rejects a selected frequency component or frequency band by actively providing an offset signal that effectively cancels the rejected frequency component or frequency band, while allowing the remaining frequency components or frequency bands to pass relatively freely to the output of the filter. The offset signal may also be used to actively reject a DC offset voltage or current from the input signal.

Selecting an icon on a schematic representative of a process causes the template to pop up in a window type of environment with relevant data already filled in. The completion of the template results in a message being sent to a process module which provides real time values of the parameters.
