  • Patent number: 7141781
Abstract: An improved device, method, and system efficiently couple high-frequency energy from radiation-assisted field emission. A radiation source radiates an emitting surface with an electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic field reduces the potential barrier at the emitting surface, allowing electrons to tunnel from the surface. The tunneling electrons produce a current. The electron tunneling current oscillates in response to the oscillations of the electromagnetic field radiation. Two or more electromagnetic fields of different frequencies radiate the emitting surface, causing photomixing. The electron tunneling current oscillates in response to the difference of the frequencies of the electromagnetic fields.

  • Patent number: 7130867
Abstract: Provided are methods, apparatus and computer programs for improved data storage and management. The invention can be implemented in a replacement or add-on to existing operating system file systems. Files in a file system are separated into a set of information components and then all information components of the file system are analyzed to identify duplication of information content. When information components with duplicate content are identified, duplicates are deleted from physical storage and indexes are generated to reflect inclusion of the retained copy of an information component in a plurality of different files. Improvements to content searching is enabled, since relevant components can be identified without retrieving whole files and since search results will include fewer duplicate results.

  • Patent number: 7126778
Abstract: It has been discovered by the inventors that the efficiency and data integrity of a storage device can be improved by dynamically adjusting certain operating parameters to optimal values during the operation of the storage device. In one embodiment, the physical properties of a storage device such as a hard disk drive are measured during the manufacturing process to determine the dependency of the storage device upon the environmental conditions in which the storage device is operating. The physical properties of the storage device and the effect the operating environment of the storage device has upon the storage device performance are determined, and optimal values for the write current of the storage device are stored in a lookup table. The temperature in which the storage device is operating is used as a reference into the data that resides in the lookup table. Optimal values for the precompensation delay may also be stored in the lookup table.

  • Patent number: 7118026
Abstract: A system, such as a checkout station, for positively identifying items includes a reader that reads coded information affixed to an item. The system further includes a capture module, such as a camera. The capture module captures a visual characteristic of the item to be identified, such as the color, size, shape, or texture of the item. The visual characteristic of the item is compared with visual characteristics of candidate items stored within a database. If multiple items within the database are associated with the item to be identified, the images of the candidate items may be displayed to a user. The user may then select the candidate item that most resembles the item to be identified. The coded information of the item being identified is then compared with coded information of the selected item within the database. If the coded information of both items corresponds, the item is positively identified and is accepted for purchase by a consumer.

  • Patent number: 7117333
Abstract: The process, apparatus, and system estimate the size of a data block in a data buffer to efficiently recover the data block to the memory of a computer. The data block resides in a data buffer prior to being written to a destination medium. If the data block cannot be written to the destination medium, the process, apparatus, and system create a data block size estimate. The data block size estimate may be based on the size of the largest data block in the data buffer. Alternately, the data block size estimate may be based on the size of a data block in the memory of the computer. The computer reserves a memory space proportional to the data block size estimate and recovers the data block to the memory space.

  • Patent number: 7117209
Abstract: Control statements related to record input, output, filtering, and formatting in a data processing system are scanned by a parser to find one or more trimming control parameters referenced in the control statements. A record trimming module scans selected data records backwards beginning at the end of the record. A record length associated with a data record is decremented as trailing values that match a value specified in the trimming control parameters are trimmed from the processed records. Processed data records are output to a specified file. The present invention increases the efficiency of processing data records within data processing applications such as pipelined sort utilities.
