Patent number: 7034946Abstract: A fiber optic ring interferometer, such as an interferometric fiber optic gyro (IFOG), with a sensing loop doubler. The IFOG device includes a light source, a circulator in optical communication with the light source and a photo diode, an integrated optical chip (IOC) capable of splitting light emitted from the circulator into two paths each of which is capable of being modulated, the IOC further being capable of combining light from each of the two paths when light travels in a direction towards the circulator, a fiber coil, and a polarization maintaining (PM) combiner/splitter disposed in between the IOC and the fiber coil. The PM combiner/splitter operates to send light through the fiber coil a first time in a first polarization state and to subsequently send the same light a second time through the fiber coil in a second orthogonal polarization state, whereby light travels twice the distance compared to a single loop IFOG device and, as such, effectively doubles the LD product.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 2003Date of Patent: April 25, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Chung-Jen Chen, Lee K. Patent number: 7025474Abstract: A dual mode or multimode backlight containing LEDs as a light source. The backlight has light cavity containing a reflective material. The cavity has an opening to allow light to be directed to a display source such as a liquid crystal display (LCD). Two sets of LEDs are provided, one set for day mode and one set for night mode. The night mode LEDs is fitted with an NVIS filter. The day mode LEDs is fitted with a filter that suppresses the phosphorescence from the day mode LEDs. The filter suppress the IR energy and allows maximum luminance from the day mode LEDs. During night mode operation, the backlight is flooded with light. Filtered light from the NVIS LED's would impinge on the day mode LED's causing them to phosphoresce. The filter over the day mode LEDs removes the infrared energy from the phosphorescent light emitted from the day mode LEDs.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2003Date of Patent: April 11, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: William T. Campbell, Randy M. Maner, Steven A. Grossman

Patent number: 7027402Abstract: In a method of routing digital signals based on criteria defined by the user all messages receive a prioritization based on the criteria defined by the individual user. Based on this guidance, each digital message is Tagged so that Overlay software can determine the prioritization that will be applied to the message and subsequently which media or route will be used and when a message should be sent. The Overlay software uses embedded look-up tables, which define available routes so that prioritization decisions can be made, real-time, based on route status or cost, and prioritization algorithms or a combination of both to determine the most appropriate media or route to send a message. The Overlay software also counts each message, the route used, and the time sent to enable accounting verification at an appropriate time in the future.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2000Date of Patent: April 11, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventor: Ralph Coleman Hedden

Patent number: 7014150Abstract: A momentum-control system for a spacecraft is disclosed. The momentum-control system comprises an attitude-control system. The attitude-control system receives data concerning a desired spacecraft maneuver and determines a torque command to complete the desired spacecraft maneuver. A momentum actuator control processor coupled to the attitude-control system receives the torque command. The momentum actuator control processor calculates a gimbal rate command comprising a range-space gimbal rate required to produce the torque command and a null-space gimbal rate required to maximize the ability to provide torque in the direction of a current torque. At least four control-moment gyros are coupled to the momentum control actuator control processor. Each of the control-moment gyros receives and executes the gimbal rate to produce the desired maneuver.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2004Date of Patent: March 21, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Mason A. Patent number: 7012611Abstract: The invention provides a technique for pattern recognition that employs a state machine that incorporates a sequence of table-look-up operations. A sequence of input parameters, derived according to an application-specific algorithm, generates a corresponding sequence of memory addresses for these operations. The memory tables are organized in a hierarchical structure that corresponds to the input sequence. Table data is designed to recognize a specific library of input patterns. An input sequence traces an input-specific path through the memory tables until one of the patterns in the library is recognized or until it is determined that the input sequence is inconsistent with f the library patterns. For each library pattern, the table data is designed to accommodate the variations in the input values that are specific to the application (e.g., variations due to noise and/or tolerances). Table data can be derived by analysis, simulation, learning or a combination of these methods.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2004Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventor: Bruce Anderson

Patent number: 7013057Abstract: The present invention provides an optical element switching mechanism that overcomes many of the disadvantages found in the prior art. The switching mechanism uses a balanced arm, with an optical element attached at one end of the arm. The arm is suspended on a axis that allows it to rotate from a first position to a second position. The arm is balanced to provide low force disturbance during this movement. A spring is coupled to the arm that provides the rotational energy to move the arm. The spring is coupled such that its neutral position is between the first and second positions, and thus the spring provides the energy to move the arm from the first position to the second position and vice versa. A latch mechanism is also provided for selectively holding the arm in the first position or second position. Additionally, the latch mechanism can provide additional energy needed to catch and move the arm into final position.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2002Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventor: David A. Osterberg

Patent number: 7012271Abstract: A control system is provided for controlling the shape of a flexible electromagnetic radiation structure. The control system includes a plurality of actuators and a plurality of computational elements. Each of the plurality of actuators is coupled to a portion of the radiation structure and can be selectively actuated by the plurality of computational elements. Thus, the plurality of actuators and the plurality of computational elements provide control of the flexible electromagnetic radiation structure shape. In one embodiment, each of the plurality of computational elements controls one section of the flexible electromagnetic radiation structure. Thus each of the plurality of computational elements receives controls the one or more of the plurality of actuator within its section. Together, the plurality of computational elements provide a distributed control network for the radiation structure.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2003Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Dimitry Gorinevsky, Tristram T. Patent number: 7012854Abstract: A plurality of sensors and a digital adaptive tuning filter bank are used in extracting a desired emitted signal embedded in a noisy environment. By monitoring noise statistics of the sensor signals, the digital adaptive tuning filter bank automatically adjusts its upper (to eliminate strong tonals) and lower (to eliminate background noise) thresholds to obtain a discovery frequency band. The filter bank is designed by examining the discovery band across the sensors and over a predefined period of time. The method described significantly reduces the possibilities of matching self-noise transients (unwanted signals) and thus minimizes the false alarm rate in emitted signal recognition.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1990Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventor: Pei-hwa Lo

Patent number: 7006106Abstract: The generation of contour plot images from elevation data in real time for use in a digital moving map. The contour line interval is dynamically selectable. The elevation data is scanned in 2 dimensions simultaneously, but in a single pass. As the elevation data is scanned for the given contour line interval, a history is maintained of the contour line elevation state in both dimensions. At any point, only comparisons against the two historical values are required to determine if a point on a contour line exists.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2004Date of Patent: February 28, 2006Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventor: Craig L.
