Abstract: A multi-step process for the preparation of tetraazaindenes provides new, intermediate compounds and methods for their formation. A first method or step (1) of the process comprises reacting Meldrum's acid (cyclic dimethylmethylene malonate) or a related compound with an orthoester to form a first intermediate. Another method or step (2) of the invention comprises reacting the first intermediate with a triazole to form a second intermediate. A third method or step (3) comprises reacting the second intermediate with a base to form a tetraazaindene salt from which the tetraazaindene can then be formed. Other methods of the invention comprise sequential combinations of the three new methods above described.
Abstract: Dye-containing polymers wherein the dyes are organic in nature are incorporated into glasses produced by a sol-gel technique. The glasses may be inorganic or organic-modified metal oxide heteropolycondensates. The dye-containing polymers are covalently bonded to the glass through a linking group. The products of this invention can be used to make optically clear colored films which can be employed in the imaging, optical, solar heat energy and related arts.

Abstract: Protective overcoat compositions and photographic elements containing same comprise:(a) a water-soluble hydroxylated polymer;(b) a hydrolyzed metal lower alkoxide or mixtures thereof and wherein when said hydrolyzed metal lower alkoxide is a tetrafunctional silicon lower alkoxide said hydrolyzed metal lower alkoxide comprises a mixture of said tetrafunctional silicon lower alkoxide with another hydrolyzed metal lower alkoxide that is not a tetrafunctional silicon lower alkoxide; and(c) a fluoroalkyl polyether surface active agent. The overcoat is transparent and flexible and provides protection against scratches and abrasion.
Abstract: Anions containing sulfur and oxygen, e.g. thiosulfate, can be catalytically reduced using a protonated anion ion exchange resin as a catalyst. The process is preferably conducted in an aqueous system and at a pH below about 8.

Abstract: A hazardous liquid, such as a flammable liquid or an explosive liquid, is stored by constructing off-site a transportable module comprising a liquid storage tank mounted within a leak-tight prefabricated, reinforced, concrete vessel. The module is transported to an installation site and supported on a foundation. The space between the storage tank and the vessel is filled with a fire retardant, and then conduits, pumps, etc. are connected to the tank to provide the liquids to, and remove the liquids from, the storage tank.
