  • Patent number: 4911217
Abstract: A combination pneumatic tire and integrated circuit transponder for tire identification. The transponder is located within the tire structure and is capable of transmitting an identifying digital signal in response to interrogation by an R/F electric field emanating from outside the tire. The transponder then transmits the identifying signal, which is received, conditioned and demodulated. The tire has a steel-reinforced component, such as an annular tensile member in its bead or a steel-reinforced ply. The transponder has first and second electrodes, the first of which is positioned such that the average spacing of this first electrode's surface from one of the steel-reinforced tire components is substantially less than the average spacing of the second electrode's surface from such component.

  • Patent number: 4893665
Abstract: A reinforcing cable (40) comprises at least two yarns (41,42,43) each of which consists only of aramid filaments, and a single core yarn (44) which consists only of filaments selected from the group consisting of polyamides having a structure which is at least partially oriented and polyesters having a structure which is at least partially oriented. The aramid yarns (41,42,43) are adjacent to one another and twisted about the core yarn (44) to manufacture a cable (40), but the aramid yarns are not twisted about one another. Articles of manufacture, such as tires, which contain the new cables are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4890660
Abstract: The invention relates generally to pneumatic tires and in particular to pneumatic tires for heavy duty use comprising a diagonal ply carcass and two bead regions (1) each reinforced by two axially spaced apart bead cores (3,4). The present invention is characterized in that the radially outermost ply ending (11) of the first set (8) of plies is located at a height which is greater than the height of the radially outermost ply ending (15) of the second set (9) of plies. The tire construction according to the present invention provides particularly durable bead regions (1) and sidewall regions (2), the stiffness in the head regions (1) and sidewall regions (2) decreasing gradually from the axially inner side towards the axially outer side of the tire.

  • Patent number: 4877073
Abstract: A nonmetallic cable (20) having utility in an overlay ply (39) of a tire (10) comprises two yarns (21,22). One of the yarns (21,22) has a yarn twist of either zero or is twisted in a first direction. The other yarn (21,22) has a yarn twist that is not zero, but is twisted in a direction opposite to the direction of yarn twist in the first yarn (21,22). The cable (20) has a cable twist that is opposite in direction to the twist of the yarn (21,22) having the larger of the two yarn twists. The cable has an elongation of 4% when it is subjected to a force of not greater than 12 Newtons. A tire (10) having a belt structure (30) has an overlay (39) comprising said cables disposed radially outwardly of at least one of the belt plies (31-35).

  • Patent number: 4877072
Abstract: The invention relates to a set of tires for mounting on a vehicle which has at least two driven wheels and at least two steering wheels. The set of tires is characterized in that it comprises tires which have different tread designs for use on the left hand side and right hand side steering wheels. The different tread designs of the set of tires comprise a plurality of elongated relief element (6) which extend across the tread width (TW) with the direction of the major axis (8) of their central ellipse of inertia (7) making an angle .alpha.,.beta. with the mid-circumferential plane M--M of the tires. The present invention provides an optimum cornering stability for both left hand side and right hand side cornering for a vehicle being equipped with a set of tires according to the invention.

  • Patent number: 4869307
Abstract: A pneumatic tire (1) comprises a radial carcass (2), a tread portion (7) and a belt reinforcing structure (8) extending circumferentially around the carcass (2). Disposed radially outwardly of the belt reinforcing structure (8) is a textile reinforced overlay structure (9) having substantially circumferentially extending cords (10). The overlay structure (9) is composed of a series of helical convolutions of a textile ribbon (11) whereby adjacent helical convolutions of the textile ribbon (11) overlap. There is further disclosed a method of applying multiple layers of a single continuous helically wound textile ribbon (11) in a single continuous operation from one axial side to the other axial side of the belt reinforcing structure (8).

  • Patent number: 4865098
Abstract: A pneumatic aircraft tire having a ground engaging tread portion provided with a plurality of axially extending grooves disposed in each of the lateral portions thereof. The axial grooves in each lateral portion are spaced apart so as to provide a circumferentially continuous rib therebetween having an axial width of at least 40% of the tread width of said tread portion.
