Abstract: This invention relates to lymphotoxin-?, a lymphocyte membrane type protein. This protein is found on the surface of a number of cells, including phorbol ester (PMA) stimulated T cell hybridoma II-23.D7 cells. This invention also relates to complexes formed between lymphotoxin-? and other peptides such as lymphotoxin-? and to complexes comprising multiple subunits of lymphotoxin-?. These proteins and complexes are useful in holding LT-? formed within the cell on the cell surface where the LT-?/LT-? complex may act as an inflammation regulating agent, a tumor growth inhibiting agent, a T cell inhibiting agent, a T cell activating agent, an autoimmune disease regulating agent, or an HIV inhibiting agent. Furthermore, the antitumor activity of the LT-?/LT-? complex may be delivered to tumor cells by tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) transfected with the gene for LT-?.
Abstract: The instant methods and compositions represent an advance in controlling drug resistance in microbes. AcrAB-like efflux pumps have been found to control resistance to drugs, even in highly resistant microbes. Accordingly, methods of treating infection, methods of screening for inhibitors of AcrAB-like efflux pumps, and methods of enhancing antimicrobial activity of drugs are provided. Pharmaceutical composition comprising an inhibitor of an AcrAB-like efflux pump and an antimicrobial agent are also provided.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing improved maintenance of consistent, redundant mass storage images. In one embodiment, one feature of the invention is the presence of non-volatile storage and persistent volatile memory, where the persistent volatile memory is used to store write transactions posted to non-volatile storage. Another feature of the invention is an intermediary program, such as a device driver, that serves as an intermediary between the operating system and non-volatile storage that processes write requests from the operating system directed to non-volatile storage, stores their contents in persistent volatile memory, and then completes the write to non-volatile storage. Yet another feature of the invention is that the contents of the persistent memory region are resistant to initialization or modification during a boot cycle.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and system for determining peripheral elements, e.g., outer surfaces, of a geometrical representation of an object. The method of the invention can be implemented in any computer platform having a facility for creating a geometrical representation of an object. In particular, the computer-implemented method of the invention can be incorporated into a CAD/CAM system as one of the utilities provided by the system.
Abstract: This invention presents a method of improving enzymatic degradation of lignocellulose, as in the production of ethanol from lignocellulosic material, through the use of ultrasonic treatment. The invention shows that ultrasonic treatment reduces cellulase requirements by ⅓ to ½. With the cost of enzymes being a major problem in the cost-effective production of ethanol from lignocellulosic material, this invention presents a significant improvement over presently available methods.

Abstract: Methods for the early detection of HIV infection by detecting a change in signal transduction mediator activity, particularly, an enzyme mediator, more particularly a member of the src protein tyrosine kinase family. The methods are applicable to HIV detection with serum, plasma, blood cell lysates, urine and saliva media. The methods provide a very early, reliable, specific and sensitive test of seronegative HIV infection that is affordable and practical on a large scale.

Abstract: Therapeutic compounds and methods for inhibiting amyloid deposition in a subject, whatever its clinical setting, are described. Amyloid deposition is inhibited by the administration to a subject of an effective amount of a therapeutic compound comprising an anionic group and a carrier molecule, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, such that an interaction between an amyloidogenic protein and a basement membrane constituent is inhibited. Preferred anionic groups are sulfonates and sulfates. Preferred carrier molecules include carbohydrates, polymers, peptides, peptide derivatives, aliphatic groups, alicyclic groups, heterocyclic groups, aromatic groups and combinations thereof.

Abstract: A blood collection device has a modular suction regulator assembly in the form of an adjustable negative pressure relief valve which controls the level of suction in a collection chamber by admitting air to a short bleed-in passage proximate to a suction connection. The modular assembly is a canister which drops into a receptacle oriented transversely in the collection vessel, and defines a laterally-directed intake manifold which resists blockage. The intake passes centrally through the canister along a path spanned by a filter, past a hat-shaped poppet supported on a compression spring. Fluted and threaded members control the scale and range of poppet response so that the assembly may be calibrated before installation. A face plate covers the installed canister, and radial vanes in the intake manifold double as gripping elements for manual adjustment of the assembly. A bellows meter provides refined suction resolution by linearly advancing across an oblique or curved reference line.

Abstract: Hybrid genes comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding a preprocollagen signal sequence operatively linked to a nucleotide sequence encoding a heterologous protein are disclosed. The hybrid genes are useful for secretion of heterologous proteins from host cells. In a preferred embodiment, the signal sequence of the human preprocollagen .alpha.1(I) protein is linked to a heterologous protein of interest to allow for secretion of the protein from Hansenula polymorpha cells.
