  • Patent number: 4487959
Abstract: A process for purifying vinyl acetate contaminated with acetic acid, coloration agents, water, and/or cations and anions. A first stage consists of removing acetic acid from a vinyl acetate feed by dehydrating a commercially-available anion exchange resin by means of azeotropic distillation and passing the feed through a bed of the dehydrated resin. A second stage can consist of removing coloration agents by passing the vinyl acetate feed through a bed of activated carbon. A third stage can consist of removing water by passing the vinyl acetate feed through a bed of desiccant. A fourth stage can consist of removing cations and anions by passing the vinyl acetate feed through separate cation exchange resin and anion exchange resin beds or through a mixed resin bed.

  • Patent number: 4483521
Abstract: A vibration damper of viscous damping type for damping low-frequency (10 to 20 Hz) vibrations has at least one subpassageway oblique to the axis of a main passageway. Since vortexes are generated around the main passageway as damping fluid passes through the subpassageway, the fluid can effectively reciprocate through the main passageway in response to pressure gradients induced by the vortexes, thus increasing the damping force generated as the fluid flows through the main passageway. Further, since the frequency at which the maximum flow rate, that is, the maximum damping factor can be obtained is determined on the basis of the dimensions of a passageway, the dimensions of the main passageway and the subpassageway are selected so as to match the maximum-flow-rate frequency of the subpassageway with that of the main passageway.

  • Patent number: 4482893
Abstract: In a cathode ray tube display system in which objects to be displayed are represented by digital signals, a technique is employed to reduce distortion caused by aliasing. The objects to be displayed are represented in a memory by transition specifications which represent the object to be displayed by defining the character of the edges of the object to be displayed. From the transition specifications, a video signal is generated and applied to the cathode ray tube display device to display the object represented by the stored transition specifications. The circuitry generating the video signal causes the video to change in steps across the width of a transition from the brightness prior to the edge to the final brightness of the other side of the edge with the width of the transition varying in accordance with the slope that the edge makes with the raster scan line.

  • Patent number: 4480931
Abstract: An electronic typewriter which provides for significant simplification of machine operations. The typewriter includes automatic error correcting function associated with electronic controls and a memory. A series of text data which have been deleted during an incessant error correcting operation are stored in a specially provided buffer memory from which they can be recalled upon depression of a print initiating key for causing the corresponding text to be printed automatically. An LED indicates that the current print line contains printed characters which can be erased by such automatic correcting operation. The typewriter further provides for simplified indentation and a novel carrier return mode.

  • Patent number: 4476780
Abstract: A fluid actuated press is defined by two interlinked box shaped members having open sides with the upper member fixed and the lower member moveable with respect to the upper member. The top wall of the moveable member is positioned between the top and bottom walls of the fixed member and the space between the top wall of the moveable member and the bottom wall of the fixed member defines an expandable fluid chamber to receive pressurized fluid. When pressurized fluid is introduced into the chamber it expands the fluid chamber driving the moveable member in an upward direction toward the top wall of the fixed member and to apply a compressive force to a work piece positioned between the upper wall of the fixed member and the top wall of the moveable member. The walls of the boxed shaped member are reinforced with parallel bars which are notched or provided with tabs at the ends thereof to interlock with the bars of the adjacent connecting wall to oppose relative outward movement.
