  • Patent number: 6636982
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for detecting failure of a node in a cluster computer system. The apparatus include controllers programmed to cooperate. In one embodiment, the apparatus include first and second nodes with respective bus controllers communicatively coupled to each other and to a logical I/O device by means of a bus. The first node firstly recognizes the the second node as a node in the cluster. At some later point, a node whose communicative coupling has failed node is coupled to the cluster a second time. The first node recognizes this second coupling and, in response, queries the second node for failure-status information. The first and second nodes negotiate membership in the cluster for the second node on the first node's determining that the second node was the node that failed between the first and second couplings. Various embodiments follow: The first node firstly recognizes the second node as either a master or a slave node in the cluster.

  • Patent number: 6472008
Abstract: The present invention comprises a batch sterilization system, a controller for use in the batch sterilization system, and a method performed by the controller. The system, controller, and method are used to administer and provide on-line correction of a batch sterilization process performed on a batch of containers. The controller compiles an actual retort time-temperature profile during the batch sterilization process from the actual retort temperatures sensed by a sensor. While this is occurring, the controller controls a batch sterilizer so as to administer an initial portion of the batch sterilization process before a temperature deviation has begun according to a scheduled time-temperature profile. This temperature deviation is between the actual retort time-temperature profile and the scheduled processing time-temperature profile.

  • Patent number: 6460149
Abstract: Methods for re-configuring a cluster computer system of multiple or more nodes when the cluster experiences communications failure. First and second nodes of the cluster have respective channel controllers. A SCSI channel and the controllers communicatively connect the multiple nodes. When a node becomes aware of a possible communications failure, the node attempts to determine the authenticity the failure and responds according to the determined authenticity. According to one method, a first node detects heartbeat node-to-node communications failure on the channel and then tests a physical drive on the channel. If the testing is successful, the node kills the other node. If the testing is unsuccessful, the first node commits suicide. In one embodiment, the coupling includes multiple channels communicatively coupling the first and second nodes and the first node selecting one of the channels for node-to-node communications.

  • Patent number: 6440361
Abstract: A hydrostatic sterilization system, a controller for use in the hydrostatic sterilization system, and a method performed by the controller are disclosed. The system, controller, and method are used to administer a sterilization process performed on a line of carriers and to provide on-line handling of a deviation in a scheduled parameter during the process. The carriers carry containers of a shelf stable food product that is to be sterilized in the sterilization process. In addition to the controller, the hydrostatic sterilization system includes a hydrostatic sterilizer. The controller controls the hydrostatic sterilizer in performing the sterilization process according to scheduled parameters. When a deviation in a specific one of the scheduled parameters occurs, the controller identifies those of the carriers that will in response have a total lethality predicted to be delivered to them during the sterilization process that is less than a predefined target lethality.

  • Patent number: 6401114
Abstract: A method of building and assembling programs across computer networks that is dictated by the user to perform logical work without the user using a compiler. Users are able to assemble programs over a network by defining or re-defining which logical components are bound into the overall program without the use of a compiler. Logical components are called and bound into the program at run time, allowing dynamic programming which may be modified at any time without re-compiling the entire program. Each logical component can act independently of other logical components or work in concert with each other. This allows assembly of a program, even though some components may be created using totally different methodologies and/or are constructed by different programmers.
