  • Patent number: 6266581
Abstract: A spatial RAM system uses the position of a data sensor to generate a clock pulse that is used to trigger data acquisition. As a consequence, the errors associated with time-based clock sampling are avoided. This enables more accurate sampling of data at locations desired in space and more easily allows for non-uniform sampling.

  • Patent number: 5986768
Abstract: An optical cavity resonator device is provided for conducting sensitive murement of optical absorption by matter in any state with diffraction-limited spatial resolution through utilization of total internal reflection within a high-Q (high quality, low loss) optical cavity. Intracavity total reflection generates an evanescent wave that decays exponentially in space at a point external to the cavity, thereby providing a localized region where absorbing materials can be sensitively probed through alteration of the Q-factor of the otherwise isolated cavity. When a laser pulse is injected into the cavity and passes through the evanescent state, an amplitude loss resulting from absorption is incurred that reduces the lifetime of the pulse in the cavity. By monitoring the decay of the injected pulse, the absorption coefficient of manner within the evanescent wave region is accurately obtained from the decay time measurement.

  • Patent number: 5851725
Abstract: A lithography process which utilizes metastable atoms for resist exposure is disclosed. Metastable rare gas atoms, instead of photons, electrons or ions, are directed at the surface of a lithographic resist. On impact, the metastable atoms release up to 20 eV of energy per atom in the form of secondary electrons. These secondary electrons alter chemical bonds in the resist, causing it to become either soluble or insoluble in an appropriate developer solution. The metastable rare gas atoms can further be manipulated with the new techniques of atom optics to focus them, improve their collimation and intensity, or modulate them.

  • Patent number: 5761224
Abstract: A Raman cell for Raman shifting of a laser pump beam, to an output beam of a different wavelength, the cell containing a gaseous Raman medium at a pressure of 100-1000 PSIG. An input window for a pump beam is located at one end of the cell and an output window for a Raman shifted wavelength output beam is located at the cells opposite end. The output window is formed as a plane mirror having an inner face coated with dielectric thin films which provide a high reflectivity for the wavelength of the pump beam and a partial reflectivity at the cell's Raman shifted wavelength. The input window includes at least one lens that forms a converging lens for the pump beam which has a focal length in the Raman medium of about 3/2 of the cell's inner length to substantially focus the pump beam at the center of the cell after it is reflected back by the inner face of the plane mirror.

  • Patent number: 5752529
Abstract: Tobacco products including chewing tobacco, snuff tobacco and smoking tobacco products, which contain a coolant compound selected from monomenthyl succinate, alkali metal salts of monomenthyl succinate, alkaline earth metal salts of monomenthyl succinate and mixtures thereof, are disclosed. More particularly, the disclosure relates to chewing tobacco and snuff tobacco incorporating one or more of these coolant compounds, optionally in combination with other coolants. The disclosure also relates to smoking tobacco products wherein the coolant compound is incorporated in the paper, leaf wrapper and/or filter of the smoking tobacco product and, optionally, a secondary coolant is employed in combination therewith. The tobacco products of the present invention provide a surprising, long-lasting cooling effect without enhancing the mint flavor note of menthol and tend to refresh the mouth even several minutes after first contact therewith.

  • Patent number: 5736736
Abstract: A sensor for use in installing a plastic service pipe inside a steel service pipe connected to a main includes a flexible element which is fed through the steel pipe and through the plastic pipe. The element has at its remote end two light-emitting diodes and two photoconductive cells. The flexible element and the pipe are fed together into the steel pipe. The sensor indicates when the cells have entered the main because the intensity of the light reflected to the cells falls to a low value and gives an audible or visual signal. This also indicates that the end of the plastic pipe which carries a seal is positioned correctly and that sealant can be injected into the space between the steel pipe and the plastic pipe. After the sealant has set the sensor can be recovered by withdrawal through the noise-piece and through the pipe.

  • Patent number: 5735187
Abstract: A pneumatic piston-cylinder unit has a cylinder (1) in which an air piston (4) with a tubular piston rod (5) is reciprocably actuated by compressed air from two main air channels (18, 19). The air cylinder (1) includes an integrated hydraulic control system (6) having an actuation device (8) which is fixedly mounted in the air cylinder (1) for creating a flow of hydraulic fluid through hydraulic control system (6) when compressed air is present in the main air channels (18, 19) and for stopping the flow of hydraulic fluid and thereby preventing the air piston from moving when there is no compressed air in the main channels (18, 19). A piston (34) and a cylinder (28) of the hydraulic control system (6) are displaceable an adjustably long distance in relation to each other to make it possible to open and close, respectively, a larger or smaller hydraulic fluid passageway thereby controlling the moving speed of the air piston (4) while maintaining the air pressure.

  • Patent number: 5733554
Abstract: The present invention relates to vaccines for avian use which are based on live recombinant avian herpesviruses, in particular the Marek's disease viruses including HVT virus (herpesvirus of turkey), in which has been inserted, by genetic recombination, at least one nucleotide sequence which encodes and expresses an antigenic polypeptide of an avian pathogen under conditions which ensure immunization leading to efficient protection of the vaccinated animal against the pathogen. In one embodiment, the antigenic polypeptide is inserted in the UL43 gene under the control of the CMV immediate early promoter. The vaccines of the present invention are advantageous over previously used vaccines in that they can be used to ensure total protection of animals against Gumboro disease and to immunize chicks as young as one-day old without secondary effects, and only require low doses.

  • Patent number: 5728939
Abstract: A probe for an egg-testing device includes a probe tube with an annular magnet disposed at a bottom end thereof. In the probe tube, a spherical excitation member is magnetically retained by the annular magnet. The probe is axially movable in a metal tube around which a bobbin is wound. In a rest position, the probe is retained by the magnetic attractive force between the metal tube and the annular magnet. The probe is brought into an operating position by an excitation pulse supplied to the bobbin, which pulse is provided by a control unit, taking into account the diameter of an egg to be tested and the conveying speed of a conveyor.

  • Patent number: 5725865
Abstract: Coolant compositions, flavorant compositions and ingestible and topical compositions containing at least one coolant compound selected from monomenthyl succinate, alkali metal salts of monomenthyl succinate, alkaline earth metal salts of monomenthyl succinate and mixtures thereof. These compositions are found to provide a pleasant, long-lasting cooling effect without bitterness and the cooling effect manifests itself differently than the cooling effect of other known coolants. As a result, a complementary or synergistic effect can by obtained by combination with other coolants. Further, the succinate-based coolant compounds of the invention are found to enhance the sensation of alcohol in alcoholic beverages.

A hit indicator unit is placed in connection with each measuring point. The apparatus includes rail which can be placed adjacent the object to measured and which carries a measuring carriage which is movable along the rail and which directs the direct the narrow optical measuring beam at an angle relative to the measuring path in an object reference plane. The carriage is moved rectilinearly along the rail. Each hit indicator unit coacts with an indicating arrangement which automatically indicates a hit by measuring beam. The carriage is provided with an automatically indicating rail-position sensor and the indications given by the sensor are read-off with each automatic hit indication through the medium of the indicating arrangement.
