  • Patent number: 4240798
Abstract: In the decomposition of ozone in aircraft, the ozone level in an airflow upstream of the aircraft cabin is measured and a signal generated in accordance with the sensed level. This signal is amplified to a given value and a valve is opened or closed in response thereto. Connected to the valve is a source of nitric oxide under pressure. When the valve is opened a measured quantity of nitric oxide is dispensed to a location in said airflow remote from said ozone monitoring device.

  • Patent number: 4239622
Abstract: A process for disinfecting a water supply, employing as disinfectant a combination of monochloroamine and hydrogen peroxide for use as a disinfectant. The concentration of monochloroamine is preferably at least 0.02 ppm and generally not more than 0.5 ppm. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide is preferably at least 0.1 ppm and often not more than 1 ppm. Preferably the weight ratio of hydrogen peroxide to monochloroamine is in the range of 4:1 to 20:1.An advantage of employing a combination of monochloroamine and hydrogen peroxide as disinfectant is that a comparatively long lasting residual bactericide is thereby provided.

  • Patent number: 4240065
Abstract: Position sensing apparatus comprising two coil arrangements movable relative to each other, the first arrangement being a side-by-side array of elongate coil loops defining a writing area and the second coil arrangement being a single or multiple coil loose coupled with the coil loops in the array. The coil loops in the side-by-side array have phase-shifting units between them so that they give an output which is unambiguously and progressively phase-characterized dependent upon the position of the second coil arrangement on the writing area in the direction of the array. Two layers of the elongate coil loops can be provided so that the coil loops in one layer are at right angles to those in the other to give "x" or "y" co-ordinate positioning. The phase shift over the writing area may be less than 360.degree., or greater than 360.degree. with the use of an ambiguity eliminating circuit.

  • Patent number: 4238067
Abstract: Water filled cavities are dried by replacing the water with a first liquid which is miscible with water and this is then replaced by a second liquid which is miscible with the first and which has a high vapor pressure. The second liquid is then replaced by a gas. • Patent number: 4235691
Abstract: A method and apparatus of forming a layer of a metal or metal alloy on the surface of a workpiece by means of electrolytic plating, the workpiece being used as the anode. An electrolyte containing ion of at least one metal with which the workpiece is to be coated is caused to move by means of a resilient and electrically insulating material which is arranged on the anode and which is brought into contact with and adapts to the surface of the workpiece and is caused to move relative to said surface in a manner such that electrolyte and gases formed in said electrolyte are conveyed away at said surface and a low electrolyte temperature is maintained. The anode covers the surface of the workpiece to be coated and carries a resilient and electrically insulating material which divides the space between the workpiece and the anodes into cavities and acts as an electrolyte and gas conveyor and is in contact with the surface to be coated.

  • Patent number: 4235836
Abstract: The invention relates to thermally insulating, fire resistant material and its production.A problem associated with fire resistant material comprising refractory material and a binder is the tendency, in use, of the material to disintegrate due to bond failure. In the invention, hollow particles of a glass or of a ceramic are combined with a binder to give a material where the proportions of binder are such that the material is capable of deformation at high temperatures (e.g. up to 1100.degree. C.) without fracture or loss of cohesion. A specific example consists of 93% by weight of hollow spherical particles of pulverized fuel ash and 7% by weight of sodium silicate binder. The material is particularly useful in the protection of steel structures.

  • Patent number: 4233814
Abstract: A power unit comprises an internal combustion engine adapted for operating with natural induction, supercharged by a turbine-compressor unit receiving the exhaust gases of the engine. The compressor supplies air to the engine through an intake pipe provided with an atmospheric air inlet closed by a check valve in operation under load. The power of the engine is controlled by a power control member movable by an operator between a maximum power position and an idling position. An inlet valve, placed in the air inlet of the compressor and movable between an open position and a closed position, is biased towards closure by the power control member when the latter is moved towards its idling position. A locking member responsive to air pressure at the outlet of the compressor cooperates with said inlet valve to prevent its closing as long as the air pressure at the outlet of the compressor is greater than a predetermined threshold.
