  • Patent number: 5534699
Abstract: An apparatus employs two spaced apart dipole magnets. An ion beam containing carbon of mass 2, 13 and 14 is focused by an Einzel lens and is directed into a first dipole magnet. The first magnet causes the beam to bend approximately 70 degrees, which separates the mass 12, 13 and 14 ions while at the same time focusing them in the X direction or deflection plane. The ions exit the first dipole magnet and pass through a blanking plate which can selectively remove one or two of the beams of mass 12, 13 and 14 ions. After leaving the first bending magnet, the mass 12 and 14 beams pass through a steering device so the trajectories of the mass 12 and 14 ions are deflected a few degrees to bring them parallel to the mass 13 ion beam. The parallel ion beams next pass through an electrostatic slot lens which focuses the beams in the direction out of the bending plane. After passing through the slot lens, the mass 12 and 14 beams are deflected in like amount to the deflection at the first steering device.

  • Patent number: 5517906
Abstract: The water is removed from food product pouches which have passed through a water bath by advancing the pouches in a continuous stream on a first tray which is vibrated with respect to a frame. The pouches are advanced beneath an air manifold which discharges air onto the pouch to blow moisture downwardly. An air outlet is formed in the tray beneath the air manifold, and air is drawn therethrough. The reduced pressure produced by the partial vacuum restrains the pouch from upstream motion, and serves to draw away the water which has been detached from the pouch. A second vibrating tray is positioned to receive pouches discharged from the first tray. An inclined ramp flips the pouches as they travel between the trays to present the underside of the pouch for drying. Once flipped the pouches progress along the second tray beneath a second air manifold and vacuum air outlet to complete the water removal prior to discharging the pouch from the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5518614
Abstract: An interior wedge wire drum screen is mounted wholly within an exterior drum screen of narrower wedge wire spacing, and both are mounted to a frame and caused to rotate about a common central axis. One end of the outer drum is open and the other is closed by a disc-shaped drum head. The inner drum has an open end which is spaced inward of the open end of the outer drum. The waste water is presented to the surface of the inner drum screen by a waste water infeed which employs a vertical column. The column extends upwardly of an inlet and has a gradually increasing cross-section for reducing the flow of velocity of the waste water. A horizontal trough extends along the axis defined by the drums and communicates between the top of the column and a tray. The edges of the tray terminate in weirs which are parallel to the sides of the inner drum. Water flows in a smooth sheet over a weir to impact the sides of the inner screen with low velocity.

  • Patent number: 5511273
Abstract: A plastic looped handle has a front ring with two parallel members connected by a front brush head member. Bristles in curved rows extend from one side of the brush head for brushing of teeth, while convex protrusions extend from the other side of the brush head for tongue cleaning. A center bar extends across the front ring, and a rear ring extends rearwardly from the center bar. A front opening is defined between the front ring and the center bar and a rear opening is defined between the rear ring and the center bar. Both openings are sufficiently large to receive at least two human fingers therethrough. The center bar defines an angle with one of the front members of less than 90 degrees, to thereby define a wedge space, into which the hand of a user may be inserted and wedged to thereby retain control of the toothbrush.

  • Patent number: 5503860
Abstract: Proofed dough is formed into pizza crusts which am formed and frozen without baking. The dough is positioned on corrugated paperboard preforms within a tray having multiple circular openings. The preforms have sidewardly opening corrugations. The trays are conveyed through the forming apparatus in a continuous process, with formed crusts being removed and fresh preforms being inserted. The preforms are positioned in a rectangular array within the openings in the conveyed tray. A quantity of raw dough is positioned on each preform within the tray. The dough is conveyed on the preforms beneath a bank of high pressure forming dies. The dies are pressed into the openings within the tray and over the dough to form the dough into the desired pizza crust shape. Each die extends between the preform and the tray within the opening to force portions of the dough into the preform corrugations to thereby secure the formed dough to the preform.

  • Patent number: 5497820
Abstract: A venetian blind assembly has a tilt drum support with a base which has a three-segment zig-zag type slot through which two ladder legs extend and are offset sidewardly from one another, with the tilt drum interposed from front to back between the two legs. The slot holds the ladder legs apart to insure non-overlapping winding of the joined ladder legs on the tilt drum. The tilt drum is connected to a flexible cable that turns and extends vertically downwardly on the window stile. The flexible cable is positioned by a plastic guide which is fastened to the stile. The flexible cable has an extruded fitting crimped to it which has a D-shaped opening in it. The fitting receives a vertical control rod which has a D-shape. The fitting opening is substantially deeper than is required to insure a proper connection with the vertical control rod. Hence the same vertical control rod may be installed on windows that vary in height by several inches, with the excess length absorbed within the fitting opening.

  • Patent number: 5486394
Abstract: To assist in rapid taping of seams between adjacent drywall units, a tape is provided in rolls. The tape has a first layer of flexible paper material with an inwardly facing pressure-sensitive adhesive coating thereon. A second layer of reinforcing woven fiber material overlies the first layer. A third layer of flexible material overlies the woven fiber material to encapsulate the fiber material between the first layer and the second layer. The third layer has an outwardly facing release coating such that the first layer adhesive will releasably engage the third layer for manual separation of the tape when rolled upon itself. A crease is formed along the center of the tape to facilitate positioning of the tape in a wall corner. The self release properties of the tape allow it to be easily dispensed and applied without the need to remove a backing. The adhesive is formulated to maintain adhesion even when wetted by an overlying layer of drywall mud.

  • Patent number: 5473963
Abstract: A bicycling shoe has a ferromagnetic backing plate positionably connected to its sole. A nonmagnetic support plate has a plurality of through holes, and is fixed to the backing plate. NdFeB magnets of alternating polarity are attached by epoxy to the sidewalls of the through holes and make magnetic contact with the backing plate. A similar backing plate, support plate and alternating polarity magnet assembly is fixed to a bicycle pedal. A post extends from the pedal to position the shoe laterally. When the shoe is in a pedaling position, the polarity of the pedal magnets is opposite to the polarity of the shoe magnets, and the shoe is gripped to the pedal to permit transmission of power on the up stroke. To disengage, the shoe is rotated about the post, until like magnets are brought into opposition and the shoe is ejected from its position on the pedal.

  • Patent number: 5463268
Abstract: The high voltage electrostatic accelerator of this invention has spark arrester rings which form magnetic shield elements around an acceleration tube and which together with mu-metal rings between accelerator segments shield the electrons being accelerated from stray static and dynamic magnetic fields. The spark arresters surround the accelerating electrodes. The rings between accelerator segments are formed of mu-metal, an alloy of nickel designed for its magnetic shielding properties and consisting of 77 percent nickel, 4.8 percent copper, 1.5 percent chrome and 14.9 percent iron. The mu-metal spark arresters together with the rings between accelerators segments provide an effective magnetic shield in a cost-effective manner. Because mu-metal has a high permeability, magnetic field lines tend to travel about the Mu-metal rings rather than pass through the acceleration tube, where they would influence electrons being accelerated.

  • Patent number: 5456091
Abstract: A cylindrical drum is rotatably mounted within a water tank. A water manifold is mounted to the exterior of the water tank and discharges chilled water through multiple axially spaced nozzles into the rotating drum within the tank to agitate the food product contained therein. The drum has a perforate skin which allows water to pass through but retains food product within. A helical auger is fixed to the drum and rotates with the drum to advance food product from the tank inlet to the tank outlet. The manifold discharges water on one side of the tank only, to impact food product as it is being lifted upwardly as the drum rotates. The drum may be provided with lifting baffles which further agitate the food product and cooperate with the agitating water injection to improve heat transfer from the food product.

  • Patent number: 5451184
Abstract: An apparatus for removing the husks from ears of corn has axially extending rotatable molded rubber rolls. Each roll has a plurality of aligned axially extending flights which protrude from a cylindrical base segment. The flights may extend exclusively axially, or may extend circumferentially as well to define a segment of a helix. The flights of adjacent rolls are meshed with one another, and the rolls are rotated toward one another to engage husks therebetween. Portions of one or both rolls define a helical recess which extends the length of a roll. A continuous rib may extend from the base segment and is aligned between two flights and extends above the base segment, the rib extends through the helical recess, and engages husks within the recess of an adjacent roll. The continuous rib may be internally reinforced with a metal blade. The roll recesses provide relief for larger diameter trash and stalks, alleviating the flexing of the roll axles which might otherwise occur.
