    Abstract: A fault warning system controls light sources and a warning signal to provide an indication of fatal and non-fatal faults in a communication system. The circuitry uses a pull-down circuit in electrical communication with light and signal control circuits. The circuit can be operated to activate a first light emitting diode (LED) if an operational status of a monitored circuit is either fatal or non-fatal fault. The circuit can be operated to deactivate a second LED if an operational status of a monitored circuit is fatal, and the second LED remains active if the operational status of the circuit is a non-fatal fault.

Further, slope over the distance between the maximum point and the minimum point is obtained, and when the obtained slope is greater than a predetermined threshold value, it is determined that the target is a stationary on-road object. Further, the distance between maximum points or between minimum points is obtained, and when the obtained distance is smaller than a predetermined threshold value, it is determined that the target is a stationary on-road object.

The detection range is set to a distance obtained by adding a prescribed distance to the shortest distance detected, or to a distance obtained by subtracting a prescribed distance from the distance of a fixed object.

Further, the relative maximum fill level is used to control the frequency of the locally generated clock so as to control the rate at which data is read out of the buffer.

    Abstract: A method and a system for filtering a user light beam using a periodic filter having a frequency response stabilized at an absolutely calibrated value are provided. A primary light beam is generated by a tunable laser source and portions thereof are filtered by an absolute reference filter and the periodic filter. First the frequency of the laser source is automatically locked on the absolute reference filter, and then the frequency response of the periodic filter is locked relative to the frequency of the laser source. The frequency response of the periodic filter is therefore continuously maintained at the proper calibration. User input and output are provided to pass the user light beam through the stabilized periodic filter independently of the filter stabilization process. A broadband absolutely calibrated optical source and a method for absolutely calibrating an optical spectrum analysis device are also provided.

    Abstract: A reduced bandwidth 8VSB, ATSC transmitter transmits to conventional DTV receivers having bandpass filters with root raised cosine (RRC) band edge responses. The transmitter includes a vestigial sideband modulator for transferring energy in a portion of a spectrum on a first side of a predetermined frequency to a second side of the predetermined frequency. At the low band edge of the spectrum, the predetermined frequency is the pilot carrier frequency. At the high end of the spectrum, the predetermined frequency is the Nyquist sampling frequency. The energy transfer is such that no energy is transmitted between at least one band edge of the spectrum and an intermediate frequency between the band edge and the predetermined frequency. The energy is transferred on a frequency to frequency basis as a function of the energy in the RRC transition and the amplitude of a weighting function extending between the intermediate frequency and the predetermined frequency.

After the data prior to merging is stored in a buffer (S9), the merging process is performed. By storing the data prior to merging in the buffer, continuity is determined for each detected target and, therefore, even if the position of a target changes after merging, subsequent determination of continuity can be performed accurately.

    Abstract: An unwanted peak occurring due to an antenna sidelobe and an unwanted peak occurring due to a harmonic are eliminated in a radar apparatus. A peak from a target that can cause an unwanted peak is found based on the intensity of the peak, and a search is made for a peak having a predetermined positional relationship with the thus found peak. If such a peak is located, then it is determined whether the peak is a candidate for an unwanted peak, based on the difference between the intensity of the peak and the intensity of the main peak. If both of the paired peaks are determined as being candidates for unwanted peaks, it is determined that the peaks are unwanted peaks.
