Patent number: 6704063Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus comprising control means (114) for controlling functions of the apparatus in response to user commands, the apparatus being connectable to peripherals through communication means (113). The apparatus enables a user to easily control whether a command is sent to the apparatus only, or simultaneously to the apparatus and its peripherals. In this way, a user can easily and simultaneously accomplish tasks, which are common to the apparatus and one or more of its peripherals.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1999Date of Patent: March 9, 2004Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventor: Michael J. J. H. Van Der Wulp

Patent number: 6631995Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of generating an image having a desired brightness, which image is generated by means of a device provided with at least one light source, at least one electro-optical light modulation panel and at least one light-control device. The light from the light source is converted into an image having a desired brightness via at least the electro-optical light modulation panel and the light-control device. The image to be projected is analyzed in a regulator, whereafter the electro-optical light modulation panel and the light-control device are driven, while a too bright image is generated by means of the electro-optical light modulation panel, which image is converted by means of the light-control device into an image having a desired brightness and a desired contrast.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1999Date of Patent: October 14, 2003Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Douglas A. Stanton, Martinus V. C. Stroomer, Adrianus J. S. M. De Vaan

Patent number: 6020912Abstract: A video-on-demand system comprises a server station and a user station. The server is adapted to transmit a selected television signal with operating data defining a selected one of various available sets of playback modi (normal, fast forward, slow forward, rewind, pause, etc.) in response to operating signals from the user station indicating the selected set of playback modi. Operating data which define the various available operating signals (the user interface) are fixed in the server and are transmitted by the server to the user station. Downloading of different sets of the user interface at different prices is possible. For example, a television program with commercials may be offered at a higher price if it includes the facility of fast forward during commercials.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1996Date of Patent: February 1, 2000Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventor: Desiree De Lang

Patent number: 5578959Abstract: In an integrated circuit an effective admittance is adjusted. The adjustment uses an admittance element in combination with a current multiplier circuit. The current multiplier circuit provides current I.sub.p proportional to a reference current I.sub.ref through the admittance element: I.sub.p =.alpha.I.sub.ref. The current I.sub.p flows through a terminal in parallel with the current I.sub.ref through the admittance element. This reduces the effective admittance to ground seen at the terminal. The proportionality coefficient .alpha. is modulated using a control circuit which sets the coefficient .alpha. in a non-linear dependence (a+bM)/(c+dM), or P(M)/Q(M), where P and Q are polynomials, on a control signal M. In this way various electronic parameters which depend non-linearly on the effective admittance can be given a linear dependence on the control signal.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1993Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Robbert H. Van Der Wal, Laurens J. De Haas

Patent number: 5534932Abstract: In a method of transmitting an extended television signal comprising a wide aspect ratio picture between two horizontal bars so as to form a standard aspect ratio picture, in which vertical resolution enhancement signals are transmitted to improve the vertical resolution upon display on an enhanced television receiver, this method comprises the steps of separating the vertical resolution enhancement signals into a low-frequency part (DC-1.5 MHz) and a high-frequency part (1.2-2.9 MHz); transmitting the high-frequency part during the horizontal bars, which high-frequency part is not modulated onto a subcarrier; and transmitting the low-frequency part during the horizontal bars after modulation onto a subcarrier (4.43 MHz).Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1994Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Adrianus C.
