  • Patent number: 8184856
Abstract: A relative motion sensor mounted in the headrest of a vehicle driver seat is used to assess the head pose of a vehicle driver and adjust the headrest position to optimize both the safety of the driver and the sensitivity of the relative motion sensor. At the beginning of each ignition cycle, the relative motion sensor is used to adjust the position of the headrest relative to the driver's head for optimal driver safety, and the relative motion sensor is oriented to provide optimal sensitivity for head pose assessment when the headrest is positioned for driver safety.

  • Patent number: 8170526
Abstract: Long-range remote communication and control of a vehicle is achieved with primary and secondary cellular devices provided by the vehicle user. The primary cellular device is retained by the user, while the secondary cellular device is dedicated to the vehicle and placed in a docking station provided in the vehicle passenger compartment. The vehicle docking station is equipped with typical cell phone electrical interfaces to supply power and to establish a bi-directional data communication link between the secondary cellular device and an on-board vehicle computer. The secondary cellular device remains activated, and provides a low-cost remotely accessible communication link between the on-board vehicle computer and the primary cellular device or any other phone, provided that specified security conditions are satisfied.

  • Patent number: 8164045
Abstract: An optical system and method for controlling light propagation along a light path. An optical element such as a lens is formed of a first light transmitting material and has a surface finish effective to scatter light impinging on the surface. Index matching material contacts to a portion of the surface so as to reduce or nullify the scattering effects of the surface finish within the portion. This allows the first optical element to have surfaces that have been generally prepared for scattering light and then later selectively negate the scattering effects of the surface finish by contacting portions of the surface with index matching material. As such, light in the optical element directed toward a surface or boundary within selected portion propagates into or out of the optical element. Light outside of the selected portion is scattered. Such an arrangement helps to reduce image degradation due to light outside of the light path being reflected about within the optical system.

  • Patent number: 8154394
Abstract: An occupant system includes a sensing device disposed in a seat and an electronic device configured to acquire data from the sensing device. The electronic device includes a system controller which uses that data to determine an appropriate system response. Data is acquired in at least two different system configurations and in at least two different time periods. A data set is created which represents a comparison of data acquired in the different configurations and times. The elements of this data set are compared to each other to identify anomalous data and respond accordingly.

  • Patent number: 8120200
Abstract: A control methodology for an engine-driven electric machine of a hybrid vehicle electrical system for enabling continued operation of the vehicle electrical system under failure mode conditions that require or result in disconnection of the battery pack from the electrical system. At the onset of a fault condition requiring battery disconnection, the electric machine is controlled to drive the battery pack current toward zero before disconnecting the battery pack. Once the battery pack is disconnected, whether by relay or fuse, the electric machine is controlled to maintain the bus voltage of the electrical system at a specified value. In both operating modes, the electric machine is controlled based on a synchronous vector current command that is determined directly as a function of the control objective (zero battery pack current or maintaining bus voltage) for improved response time compared to a traditional torque-based control.

  • Patent number: 8116524
Abstract: A method is set forth for the detection of an object, in particular in a road, in particular of a pedestrian, in the surroundings in the range of view of an optical sensor attached to a carrier such as in particular a vehicle, wherein, from the range of view of the optical sensor, a relevant spatial region disposed below the horizon is determined, a gray scale image is produced by means of the optical sensor which includes a relevant image region corresponding to the relevant spatial region, and a search for a possible object is only made in this relevant image region corresponding to the relevant spatial region disposed below the horizon for the detection of the object.

  • Patent number: 8115676
Abstract: A communications system and method thereof are provided, wherein the system includes a first receiver. The first receiver includes at least one antenna element configured to receive the first signal having a first polarization, and a combiner in communication with the at least one antenna element, wherein the combiner enhances the first signal and minimizes a second signal having a second polarization that is different than the first polarization of the first signal, such that an output is emitted by the first receiver based upon the received first signal. The first receiver further includes a beam steerer in communication with the combiner, wherein the beam steerer is configured to steer an antenna beam of the at least one antenna element in order to minimize reflection of the second signal, such that the second polarization of the second signal remains different than the first polarization of the first signal.

  • Patent number: 8099998
Abstract: An engine control system, controller, and method for estimating a stopped engine crank angle of an internal combustion engine. Typical crank sensors do not output a reliable crank signal when the engine is about to stop, and do not indicate crank direction which is necessary to determine if engine bounce-back occurs. A crank sensor signal is analyzed as the engine coasts to a stop so that a coast-down model can be adjusted to accurately estimate the stopped engine crank angle. A bounce-back model is also used to estimate an engine bounce-back angle and to make further corrections to the estimated stopped engine crank angle.

  • Patent number: 8102417
Abstract: A system and method are provided for determining eye closure state of the eye of a subject. The system includes a video imaging camera oriented to generate images of an eye of a subject and a video processor for processing the images generated with the video imaging camera. The video processor is configured to detect an eye in the video images and determine whether the images of the eye are noisy. The video processor processes geometrical and statistical shape of the eye in the images if the eye is not noisy, and processes changes in the size of the eye over time if the images are noisy. The processor further determines eye closure state based on a ratio of horizontal to vertical dimensions.
