Patent number: 5224386Abstract: Grip apparatus for tensile strength testing of geosynthetic materials includes a pair of opposing first and second grip bars slidably mounted in a frame. Selectively operable locking elements carried on the frame and the first grip bar enable selective fixation of the first grip bar at a desired position with respect to the second grip bar when inserting or removing or loading test specimens. Various constructions of grip bars, and grip jaws mounted on the bars, are provided, including replaceable high friction surface rods, grip surfaces with alternating grooves and shoulder surfaces, and easily replaceable L-shaped grip jaws that do not require disassembly of the apparatus. A plurality of actuating shafts impart movement and grip forces to each grip bar, with the actuating pumps for the shafts being operable simultaneously, separately, synchronously or asynchronously.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1991Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Inventor: John M. Patent number: 4802283Abstract: A navigation device comprises a flat substrate, a compass rose carried on the substrate, an elongated cord affixed at one end to the center of the compass rose and at least one linear distance scale on the substrate having its origin coincident with the center of the compass rose. In use, the navigation device is placed on a navigation chart, so that the center of the compass rose lies over a predetermined point of origin on the chart and the North compass direction of the rose is in parallel alignment with the North direction indicated on the navigation chart. A taut length of the cord is extended from the center of the compass rose to a predetermined destination point. The desired heading direction is noted where the cord crosses the perimeter of the compass rose. The linear extent of the cord form the point of origin to the destination point is marked and placed along the distance scale. The distance to be traveled is noted on the distance scale at the extremity of the marked cord length.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1987Date of Patent: February 7, 1989Inventor: Thomas R. Trump

Patent number: 4662229Abstract: Grip apparatus for use with tensile stress testing apparatus includes a housing having connecting means on the top of the housing for connecting the grip apparatus to the tensile stress testing apparatus. A first elongated bore extends from the bottom of the housing through a portion of the housing parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing to form a receptacle for a test piece. A pair of second elongated bores extend from the top surface of the housing, converging toward the bottom surface of the housing, with the lower end of each second bore opening into the first bore. Each of said second bores contains a slidable grip bar extending into the first bore and having a grip insert secured on the lower end of the grip bar. A spring loaded release mechanism normally retains the grip bars and grip inserts in a closed position and can be manually operated to release the inserts and grip bars by sliding the grip bars upwardly through the second bores.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1985Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Inventor: John M. Curtis

Patent number: 4458624Abstract: A temperature verification device employs a coiled bimetallic strip having its temperature responsive, rotatable outer end engaged with an indicator flag which is connected with a finger-like projection spaced outwardly from the indicator flag. A stop member is provided in the path of the distal end of the finger-like member and is adapted to engage the distal end when the flag member is moved in one direction, for example, clockwise. Movement of the flag member in the opposite direction can be achieved because the resilient finger-like member will slide past the stop member. All of the structure is confined in a casing having an opening through which the flag indicator may be observed under certain conditions. The stop member can be positioned at any selected location about the periphery of the casing to function as a holding means for the flag indicator at a preselected temperature threshold.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1982Date of Patent: July 10, 1984Assignee: Schobl Enterprises, Inc.Inventor: Howard T. Patent number: 4394872Abstract: A valve assembly for packing removal includes a valve body having a bonnet and yoke attached to the body and a chamber extending longitudinally through the bonnet. A stem secured in the yoke extends through the bonnet chamber. Valve packing means are enclosed in the bonnet around the stem and secured by a packing gland connected to the top of the bonnet. An annular drive bushing is mounted in the bonnet chamber around the stem below the bottom of the packing means. In actuation of the drive bushing, mechanical or fluid drive means engage the bottom of the drive bushing, with the packing gland removed from the bonnet, to displace the drive bushing upwardly through the bonnet chamber for removal of the packing means therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1981Date of Patent: July 26, 1983Assignee: Schobl Enterprises, Inc.Inventor: Howard T. Patent number: 4341118Abstract: Tamper proof apparatus for verification that a critical temperature has been reached or exceeded includes a permanently sealed casing and cap containing a thermal element connected to a rotatable cam having a temperature indicator extending outwardly therefrom adapted to rest under a transparent window in the cap when critical temperature has been reached. Maximum and minimum temperature stops on the cap prevent movement of the indicator beyond preselected positions. An opening through the cap engages a removable shipping pin cooperating with either the maximum or minimum temperature stop to prevent movement of the indicator during shipment or storage. A locking spring connected to the cap traverses the lateral surface of the cam until the spring engages a shoulder formed in the cam. The shoulder and spring have, respectively, a first spur and a second spur that engage in permanently locked position when a critical temperature has been reached.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1980Date of Patent: July 27, 1982Assignee: Schobl EnterprisesInventor: Howard T.
