  • Patent number: 4563433
Abstract: A dual phase silicon aluminum oxynitride material comprising a first phase Si-Al-O-N, commonly referred to as .beta.-Si-Al-O-N, and a second phase Si-Al-O-N referred to as .alpha.-Si-Al-O-N. In addition to the double phase Si-Al-O-Ns, there is included a glassy type material which can formulate up to ten percent by weight of the total composition. The material may be manufactured by forming a polytype material made from reacted alumina, aluminum nitride and silicon nitride. The polytype material may be mixed with further powders of silicon nitride and an oxide of yttrium, lithium or calcium and finally reacted to a double phase Si-Al-O-N material where hardness is increased as the additional .alpha.-Si-Al-O-N is increased without significantly affecting its strength. The material may be formed in situ by mixing aluminum nitride, alumina, silicon nitride, together with an oxide of yttrium, lithium or calcium. These materials can then be sintered to a final product containing a double phase Si-Al-O-N.

  • Patent number: 4491559
Abstract: A flowable material, or slurry, comprising a liquid vehicle and solid particulate material dispersed therein which will flow out flat in the form of a sheet. The material, upon exposure to the atmosphere, and either with or without the application of heat, will set up in a dimensionally stable form and can, thereafter, be sintered to form a solid article. The fraction of the vehicle of the composition which remains after the solvent evaporates, vaporizes during sintering and the final product consists only of the particulate material in sintered form.

  • Patent number: 4414029
Abstract: This invention relates to mixtures of tungsten carbide, niobium metal, and molybdenum metal powders for use in the hardfacing of drill pipe couplings used in earth boring operations. It has been found that the addition of small amounts of niobium metal alone, or in combination with molybdenum, are effective to substantially submerge the tungsten carbide particles in the weld pool produced during hardfacing while, also, minimizing the occurrence of cracks which may be produced as the weld pool freezes.

  • Patent number: 4371210
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a new method and improved apparatus for digging and mining earth formations, especially coal formations. A mining or excavating machine having a movable frame with a drive means mounted on the frame is provided with a rotatable structural member and a rotatable cutter support having cutter bits mounted thereon. The structural member is rotatably mounted on the frame and connected to the drive means so as to be driven in one direction of rotation about a longitudinal axis of the structural member. The rotatable cutter support assembly with the cutter bits mounted thereon is rotatably mounted on the structural member and is freely rotatable about its longitudinal axis. The mining machine is then positioned so that the cutter bits will reduce the mineral formation by driving the structural member in one direction of rotation about its longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 4368634
Abstract: An extrusion punch, especially for use in a back extrusion process, wherein a hard wear resistant material is joined on one end to a steel punch body. The hard wear resistant material is joined on at the tip of a steel body so as to prevent wear due to abrasion on the punch caused by the material being extruded in a die means. The hard wear resistant end cap on the tip of the steel body is joined so that it may easily and quickly be replaced when the punch is in position on the machine thereby providing less down time for maintenance on the extrusion press. The method of joining the hard wear resistant end cap to the steel body minimizes the conditions which tend to fracture hard wear resistant material.
