  • Patent number: 6411417
Abstract: An optical equalizer for a wavelength division multiplexed optical signal in an optical communications system utilises an array of parallel waveguides using planar waveguide technology. Waveguides having a range of different lengths have transmission controlled respectively in amplitude and/or phase in accordance with parameters calculated from a Fourier transform of an input frequency characteristic. Calculation of the parameters may be simplified by a Hilbert transform applied to determine phase values of the input terms of the Fourier transform. Feedback may be utilized by measuring the equalizer output and generating difference signals applied to the input to improve accuracy of equalization response by iteration or to overcome systematic errors. The equalizer has application to optical systems having line amplifiers where fiber amplifiers result in gain tilt, the equalizer allowing gain tilt to be corrected.

  • Patent number: 6411250
Abstract: A vehicle (160) such as a motor road vehicle is fitted with an electromagnetic sensor system comprising transmitting means (e.g. 4, 1) for transmitting a radio frequency signal, receiving means (e.g. 2, 6) for receiving reflections of said signal from remote objects, sampling means (20, 28) operable to sample the received reflected signal (or a signal derived therefrom), and processing means (e.g. 36) for processing the sampled signal, and operable to detect said reflections in the sampled signal, and to determine information on the presence, position and/or range of said object. The system includes filter means (e.g. 34) for preventing radio signals transmitted by other sources or noise spikes from causing interference which results in spurious detections or indications of range by the processing means.

  • Patent number: 6411665
Abstract: A clock recovery circuit includes a phase locked loop in which the control voltage of a voltage controlled oscillator is controlled by a loop filter driven by the output of a phase comparator. During acquisition of the phase locked condition, a frequency error detector is used to detect frequency error and input a frequency error signal to a charge pump circuit associated with the loop filter. Frequency error is detected by a method of determining the phase quadrant of clock signal in which each transition of the data occurs, an algorithm implemented by logic circuit being utilized to selectively generate the frequency error signal only for certain defined transitions between phase quadrant values. Sampling of the phase quadrant values is effected by sampling sub-circuits using latched values of the clock and quadrature clock signals to obtain samples of the clock and quadrature clock signals for each transition, and subsequently determining the phase quadrant value by a logical combination of the samples.

  • Patent number: 6410118
Abstract: An exterior wall assembly water management system that provides the designer and building owner with the popular esthetics of synthetic stucco and the long-term reliability of water management. The water managed exterior system includes flashing, a weather-resistive barrier, a water durable board, a basecoat and an exterior finish. Either the water durable board, or an insulation layer secured to the water durable board, forms the exterior cladding of the building structure, and the basecoat and the exterior stucco finish are applied to the outer surface of the water durable board, or in the alternative to the insulation layer. The disclosed water managed exterior system efficiently directs any penetrating water to weeps, or the like, by providing a water drainage medium between the weather-resistive barrier and the water durable board. The unwanted water drains downwards via the drainage medium, is caught at the base of the wall by the flashing, and is further drained outside of the wall cladding.

  • Patent number: 6411629
Abstract: Data packets are transmitted over a communications link in an interleaved manner. The link comprises a series of time-division multiplexed (TDM) frames, each frame comprising a plurality of time slots, a time slot being shorter than a data packet. Data packets are transmitted over a series of the TDM frames, one time slot in each of the series of frames being used to transmit a portion of that data packet. Different ones of the data packets begin in different TDM frames. Received data packets are allocated a modified header for use over the communications link. The modified header has a shorter address than the address in the received packet header and the modified header can be split into a plurality of parts which are distributed across the length of the transmitted packet.

  • Patent number: 6407818
Abstract: A system in which a succession of products (12) to (16) traverse a gap between two conveyors (10, 18), comprises a ring (32) carrying an array of one or more equi-spaced laser displacement transducers (36-42) connected to a computer (48). The ring is disposed perpendicular to the direction of product movement, such that each product (e.g. a log of food) passes through its central region, the ring being rotatable in a continuous or oscillatory manner. Signals received by the computer from the transducers are stored and computed to determine the shape and/or size of the product to enable the product to be cut into an optimum number of pieces. A method is described for determining volume and thereby weight using mean density values for the products, of irregularly shaped bulk product, particularly fresh meat.

  • Patent number: 6408163
Abstract: A data processing system comprising a plurality of processors each storing an instance of replicated data, the system comprising a master processor having a master memory. The master processor maintains a stored data instance in the master memory, updating the stored data instance in response to receive request messages, requesting said master processor to transmit a broadcast message to other processors. The request message contains an update of a data item updated at one of a plurality of local processors. On receipt of the request message, the master processor updates the corresponding data item in the master memory, and broadcasts the updated data item over a communications medium, eg a common bus linking all the processors, so that each local processor may update its own instance of stored data stored on the corresponding respective local memory.

  • Patent number: 6406284
Abstract: A method of forming consumer portions from a block of frozen foodstuff is described, in which similarly sized sections of the frozen block are removed by severing for shaping into the differently shaped consumer portions under pressure between tooling of a forming press. Each section is of a similar size and volume so that when the press is operated the severed section is formed into a consumer portion of known volume. Each consumer portion is ejected for further processing after the tooling separates. The surface of each severed section of frozen foodstuff is wetted with a liquid (typically water) just before the pressing operation.

  • Patent number: 6405634
Abstract: A hydraulic axial piston machine (1) includes a cylinder drum (3) having at least one cylinder (4) in which a piston (5) is arranged to be reciprocating, an inclined swash plate (8), on which the piston (5) is supported via a slide shoe (7), a pressure plate (9) maintaining the bearing of the slide shoe (7) on the swash plate (8), and a spring arrangement (10) by means of which the pressure plate (9) is pressed against the swash plate (8) via the cylinder drum (3). In the past, the pressure plate has been supported on the cylinder drum (3) via a ball joint, with the spring arrangement and a driving shaft for the cylinder drum penetrating the cylinder drum. The ball joint is expensive and exposed to wear. According to the invention, the spring arrangement (10) bears immediately on the pressure plate (9). Thus, a ball joint and the wear of it will be avoided.
