  • Patent number: 7454293
Abstract: A method for enhanced detection and statistical analysis of differentially expressed genes in gene chip microarrays employs: (a) transformation of gene expression data into an expression data matrix (image data paradigm); (b) wavelet denoising of expression data matrix values to enhance their signal-to-noise ratio; and (c) singular value decomposition (SVD) of the wavelet-denoised expression data matrix to concentrate most of the gene expression signal in primary matrix eigenarrays to enhance the separation of true gene expression values from background noise. The transformation of gene chip data into an image data paradigm facilitates the use of powerful image data processing techniques, including a generalized logarithm (g-log) function to stabilize variance over intensity, and the WSVD combination of wavelet packet transform and denoising and SVD to clearly enhance separation of the truly changed genes from background noise.

  • Patent number: 7440766
Abstract: A method of employing multipath propagation in wireless radio communications uses an omnidirectional transmitting/receiving antenna at one end of a transmission link to send an interrogating signal across an environment subject to multipath disturbances to a phase-conjugating retrodirective antenna, and the retrodirective antenna returns a communication signal along the multiple pathways taken by the interrogating signal to the omnidirectional antenna despite the multipath disturbances. In a simplex communication mode, the retrodirective antenna sends a return signal mixed with a communication signal to the omnidirectional antenna. In a duplex communication mode, both an omnidirectional antenna and a phase-conjugating retrodirective antenna are operated in tandem at each end of the transmission link to provide effective two-way wireless radio transmissions.

  • Patent number: 7432611
Abstract: A power control interface between an unstable power source such as a wind farm and a power transmission line employs an electrical energy storage, control system, and electronic compensation module which act together like an “electronic shock absorber” for storing excess power during periods of increased power generation and releasing stored energy during periods of decreased power generation due to wind fluctuations. The control system is provided with a “look ahead” capability for predicting power output (wind speed conditions) and maintaining energy storage or release over a “narrow-band” range despite short duration fluctuations. The control system uses data derived from monitoring the wind farm power output and the power transmission line, and employs system-modeling algorithms to predict narrow-band wind speed conditions.

  • Patent number: 7405726
Abstract: A 3D cursor or joystick device and control method employs a complementary pair of emitter/detector units, one worn on a part of a user's body (e.g., the head) and the other mounted in a stationary position on a display monitor facing the user. Each unit has an array of photovoltaic (PV) cells centered on a normal axis and an infrared diode for emitting a light beam on the normal axis. Each photodetectors array receives the infrared beam from the other unit and provides output signals representing the light intensities of the received beam on the PV cells. The PV cell response signals of the complementary units are used together to calculate the position and angular orientation of the user-worn unit relative to the stationary unit. The position and angle values are used by a software device driver installed on a computer to control 3D navigation functions of the associated application program on the computer.

  • Patent number: 7388196
Abstract: An improved rotating electric field ion mass spectrometer (REFIMS) provides for a smooth transition of the input ion beam from zero rotation to the desired level of field rotation. The REFIMS grid shape is changed from a fixed-diameter tunnel to that of a horn. The horn shape has a flare end with a larger entrance width that reduces the grid electric field strength to near zero and causes no abrupt deflection of the beam at the entrance, and tapers along the longitudinal z axis to a narrower width so that the field strength applied to the beam increases gradually until the correct field strength is obtained at its exit end for the desired rotation of the beam. Preferably, the horn shape in cross-section is hyperbolic, and the increase in field strength is approximately linear with distance along the z axis. The horn shaped device can provide a 2D spectral readout in which the ions are imaged on the target plane at radial positions increasing linearly with decreasing atomic mass units (amu).

  • Patent number: 7356364
Abstract: A device for monitoring the concentration level of a constituent in tissue or a body fluid sample, such as glucose concentration in blood, has a laser light source which is modulated about a center emission frequency to probe the absorption spectrum of the constituent being monitored, a laser driver circuit for tuning and modulating the laser light, a photodetector for detecting light from the laser light source transmitted through the sample as the modulation frequency of the laser is tuned, and a demodulator for demodulating the transmitted light and detecting variations in magnitude at harmonics of the modulation frequency to assess the concentration level of that constituent. The device utilizes short-wavelength near-infrared laser light to monitor blood glucose levels, and could also be used for drug screening and diagnosis of other medical conditions as well.

  • Patent number: 7311641
Abstract: An exercise device for weightlifting or weight training for use with resistance type weightlifting exercises. The device is a V-shaped, solid, weighted exercise bar with two wings and an apex. The wings contain handle grips and are capable of having weight plates, discs and collars attached. The apex contains a projecting post that extends in an outward direction and holds weight, whereby the weight balances and counterbalances the weight on the wings. The total weight on the apex can be heavier, lighter or equal to the total weight on the wings. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the apex and wings are capable of accepting standard weight plates and discs using conventional weightlifting collars to hold the weights in place. In an alternative embodiment the apex and wings are permanently set with weights. Included are corresponding weight training methods for use with the exercise device.

  • Patent number: 7304607
Abstract: A high-directivity transponder system uses a dual system of a retrodirective array transmitting a data signal peak toward an interrogator source, and a self-null-steering array transmitting a null toward the interrogator source and a jamming signal elsewhere, resulting in high S/N reception at the interrogator source and avoidance of interception. Integrating modulators would allow each array to transmit different data while the spectra of the transmitted signals are identical, thus disabling interception. The system enables secure point-to-point communications and can be used for short-distance wireless data transmission systems such as wireless LAN and RFID servers.
