    Abstract: An adjuster for a strut located between first and second friction members for a drum brake. The strut has a shaft that is free to rotate in a first end member and threaded into the second end member. A lever pivots during a brake application and engages a ratchet wheel on the shaft to rotates the shaft and expand the strut to maintain a minimum running clearance with respect to a rotatable member. A bi-metal coil strip that is fixed to the strut has a free end that is aligned with the lever arm. The strip responds to a predetermined temperature by moving the lever arm away from the ratchet wheel such movement of the lever does not rotate the ratchet wheel and expand the strut. Thus, on termination of a brake application a current running clearance is sustained without being affected by the predetermined temperature.

    Abstract: A process for manufacturing and assembling a corner assembly for a vehicle to achieve a perpendicular relationship between an axle of a vehicle and first and second braking surfaces on a rotor. In this process, after an inner race of a bearing is pressed onto a wheel hub and an outer race is pressed into a support structure to define a sub-assembly. The sub-assembly is placed onto a locating fixture such that the outer race supports the sub-assembly in a desired alignment where an out board surface on a radial flange is in a perpendicular relationship with the axis of the wheel hub. An arbor is inserted into an axle bore surrounding the axis of the wheel hub and the sub-assembly is rotated on the inner race to simulate operational condition of a vehicle as the surface of the out-board flange is finished machined to define a perpendicular relationship with the axis of the wheel hub.

In this assembly and disassembly method, the operating spacing of two brake shoes (4 and 5) inside a drum brake (3) is pre-adjusted. The invention makes it possible for the drum brake (1) to be delivered with the brake shoes (4 and 5) in a position where they are clamped against each other, corresponding to assembly clearance, while potentially retaining the spacing needed to match the operating clearance of the drum brake. A single action (A, B) on the hand-brake lever (6) enables the shoes to be moved from assembly clearance to operating clearance.
