  • Patent number: 7911330
Abstract: To test whether a trailer is coupled to a tractor when the tractor ignition switch is off, a test switch in the trailer connects a high-impedance power source in a trailer to a line carrying energy from the tractor ignition switch to the trailer's electrical load, and measures the voltage at the line. A high voltage indicates a connection only to the electrical load in the trailer and thus a decouple. A low voltage indicates a measurement of the electrical loads in both trailer and tractor and hence a coupling.

  • Patent number: 7838799
Abstract: A method and apparatus for pan roasting a mass of green coffee beans at rest by heat conduction from the pan bottom to the beans mass. A glass cover and smoke filter closes the roasting chamber. A radial blower operates at slow speed to draw ambient air and vacate smoke from the chamber to permit visual monitoring of roasting beans. Periodically, the fan can operate a high speed for a short time to mix or swirl the bean mass without substantial cooling them. The blower can sequence through high and low speed cycles until roasting completes and heating ceases. A high speed cool down phase removes remaining chaff, smoke, and quick cools the beans to preserve freshness. Electric power drives the blower and resistant heating element. The system enables the operator to use appearance, sound, smell, and time to determine roasting completeness.

  • Patent number: 7340625
Abstract: A process and apparatus for preparing said process for reducing the power consumption of microprocessor-based devices by reducing the frequency of the oscillator governing the logical operation of the microprocessor during periods of use in which system performance is not critical. In one embodiment of apparatus the microprocessor is controlled by a monitor circuit operable with the microprocessor and operated by the variable frequency oscillator. In another embodiment a hardware monitor circuit is utilized and which tracks microprocessor instructions to determine periods of use when performance is not critical. The shift in oscillator speed is mediated by a flip-flop latch circuit connected between one or more clock oscillators and the oscillator input of the controlled microprocessor.

  • Patent number: 6567000
Abstract: Events in a vehicle are monitored by producing electrical outputs representative of events in the vehicle, comparing characteristics of one event with characteristics of other events accumulated over a given period of time and determining departures of a given extent from the other characteristics as an indication of a significant event, and sending a warning in response to the indication, particularly with the position of the vehicle determined by a GPS receiver on the vehicle. In an embodiment a microcomputer responds to the outputs of an accelerometer system mounted on a railroad car by comparing acceleration characteristics of one impact with accumulated acceleration characteristics of other impacts and determining departures of a given extent from other characteristics as a failure indication, signalling a warning in response to the indication.

  • Patent number: 6444491
Abstract: An integrated semiconductor device is formed from two fabricated semiconductor devices each having a substrate by placing an etch-resist on the substrate of the one semiconductor device, by bonding the conductors of one of the fabricated semiconductor devices to the conductors of the other fabricated semiconductor device, flowing an uncured cement (e.g. epoxy) between the etch-resist and the other substrate, allowing the cement to solidify, and removing the substrate from the one of the semiconductor devices. More specifically, a hybrid semiconductor device is formed from a GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well modulator having a substrate and an IC chip having a substrate by placing an etch resist on the modulator substrate, bonding the conductors of the modulator to the conductors of the chip, wicking an uncured epoxy between the modulators and the chip, allowing the epoxy to cure, and removing the substrate from the modulator.
