    Abstract: An implant with a surface modified for improved bio-compatiability consisting of a metal or an alloy thereof, said implant surface comprising a modified outer layer is disclosed, wherein said metal preferably is titanium, zirconium, hafnium or tantalum, and most preferably titanium, and said modified outer layer preferably comprises a hydride of said metal. Also a method for the production of such an implant is disclosed.
