Abstract: A surgical probe includes an articulated digit located at a distal end of a positioning shaft having a longitudinal axis. An actuator is located at a proximal end of the positioning shaft that is operatively connected to the articulated digit so as to move it between a continuous range of positions from an extended position to a substantially curved position while maintaining a kinesthetic relationship between a surgeon's finger engaging the actuator and the articulated digit. Preferably, the surgeons finger position and shape directly correspond to the position and shape of the articulated digit. A method is provided for probing, dissecting, and retracting anatomical structures.

Abstract: Stuttering treatment methods and apparatus which utilize removable oral-based appliances having actuators which are attached, adhered, or otherwise embedded into or upon a dental or oral appliance are described. Such oral appliances may receive the user's voice and process the voice to introduce a time delay and/or a frequency shift. The altered audio feedback signal is then transmitted back to the user through a tooth, teeth, or other bone via a vibrating actuator element. The actuator element may utilize electromagnetic or piezoelectric actuator mechanisms and may be positioned directly along the dentition or along an oral appliance housing in various configurations.
Abstract: A system and method for providing kits of absorbent articles to consumers includes a selection tool that collects information about the consumer's cycle characteristics and use preferences and selects for the consumer a cycle kit of absorbent articles. An interactive ordering tool allows online purchase of a kit. An auto-send option provides monthly delivery of a cycle kit timed to coincide with onset of the consumer's menses. An information component provides use instructions and health and lifestyle information in different media, including from a web site. Different kit types include assortments of different types of feminine hygiene articles specific to particular profiles of cycle characteristics and use preferences, arranged in a package in a use sequence keyed to cycle progression. Other distribution channels in the system include both traditional and non-traditional brick-and-mortar retailers and institutional channels, such as dispensing machines.

Abstract: The invention relates to an actuator (1) for a dispenser device for spraying contents of a receptacle that is pressurized or of a receptacle that has a pump, the actuator (1) comprising a channel connectable to a receptacle outlet (19) on one side of the actuator (1) for receiving the pressurized contents of the receptacle, said channel having an orifice (11) for spraying the contents on another side of the actuator (1), wherein the channel comprises a volume chamber, said orifice forming an outlet of the volume chamber (71), wherein the orifice (11) has a valve for opening and closing the orifice (11), the valve biased by at least biasing means in the closed position, and further comprising actuation means arranged to allow a flow of content from the receptacle into the channel and volume chamber (71). The invention is characterized in that the actuation means is coupled with the biasing means for attenuating the bias on the valve biasing the valve in the closed position, if the actuation means is actuated.

Abstract: Described herein is a method for optimization of the conditions of execution of the vision contrast test and the corresponding system with which to implement said method so as to be able to guarantee optimal conditions throughout the test session even when not it is not possible to respect the standards. Furthermore, the method comprises a self-calibration procedure, which definitively eliminates the operations of calibration of the system by specialized centers.

Abstract: A method of reducing the cross-sectional area of a gastrointestinal lumen is provided wherein a delivery catheter having a needle, one or more anchors disposed within the needle and a suture coupled to each anchor is advanced into the gastrointestinal lumen, the needle extended through the tissue wall, and an anchor ejected from a distal tip of the needle through the tissue wall. The needle is then repositioned against an opposing tissue wall, another anchor deployed from the needle through the opposing tissue wall, and the tissue walls approximated by applying tension to the sutures.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for reducing the effective volume of a cardiac ventricle. A ventricular volume reduction system may include a containment system or container body deliverable through a catheter into the ventricle, with the containment system or container body being fillable to occupy space within the ventricle. A ventricular volume reduction system may include a partition that sequesters a portion of the ventricle and separates it from the flow path of blood in the ventricle. Methods for reducing the effective ventricular chamber volume may include placement of the containment system, the container body or the partition within the ventricle.

Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for operating and controlling an interventional element on an interventional catheter. The interventional element may be a stent or series of stents, a balloon, or any other interventional element for which length control is necessary or desirable. A handle member includes an elongated body and an actuator knob that rotates around the longitudinal axis of the body. Rotational movement of the actuator knob is translated to rotational movement of one or more lead screws by a system of gears, rollers, or combinations of gears and rollers. Each of one or more axially moveable members is positioned on a lead screw and attached to a portion of the catheter shaft in order to provide the ability to advance or retract the portion of the catheter shaft.
Abstract: A system and method for recording and depicting ultrasound images of a moving object are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, ultrasound images are acquired as the field of view of an ultrasound probe is advanced across the tissues of interest during a resting period between periods of relatively large-scale heart cycle motion. A series of images acquired during a particular resting period may be represented as a three-dimensional volume image, and the comparison of volume images from adjacent cardiac resting periods enables three-dimensional volume image modulation analysis which may be presented for a user as a moving volume image of the objects of interest within the field of view.
Abstract: Surgical systems for less invasive access to and isolation of an atrial appendage are provided. A suturing grasper compresses soft tissue structures and deploys one or more sutures through complimentary pledget(s) carried by the grasper. The pledgets are reinforced, containing support members that define the profile of the stitch and distribute stresses applied by the stitch, once tightened, over a length of tissue. This hardware may be applicable to other surgical and catheter based applications as well including: compressing soft tissue structures lung resections and volume reductions; gastric procedures associated with reduction in volume, aneurysm repair, vessel ligation, or other procedure involving isolation of, resection of, and reduction of anatomic structures.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for diagnosing and treating digestive or other organs (as well as other parts of the body) endoluminally and transluminally, via instruments passed into the GI tract per-orally and/or per-anally. The instruments may, for example, pass transluminally out of the stomach and/or the colon through a breach formed therein in order to conduct diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, such as gastroenterostomy.
Abstract: Tissue closure systems are described herein. Such a system may include a deployment catheter and an attached imaging hood deployable into an expanded configuration. In use, the imaging hood is placed against or adjacent to a region of tissue to be imaged in a body lumen that is normally filled with an opaque bodily fluid such as blood. A translucent or transparent fluid, such as saline, can be pumped into the imaging hood until the fluid displaces any blood, thereby leaving a clear region of tissue to be imaged via an imaging element in the deployment catheter. Additionally, the system can be deployed in a number of various ways to effect the closure of wounds or openings in the patient body.
