  • Patent number: 8340682
Abstract: A scheme is provided for distributing reference geographical locations on a network. Geolocation information is integrated or associated with one or more network infrastructure devices to permit them to serve as reference points for the rest of the network. A reference geographical location associated with a network infrastructure device may be broadcast by the network infrastructure device over a network. Alternatively, other network devices may request reference geographical location from a network infrastructure device or obtain it from a network-accessible database that stores such geolocation information. Other network devices can then use the one or more reference geographical locations to determine their own geographical location. By allowing existing network devices to take advantage of the geolocation capability of its “neighboring” network devices, this scheme provides a convenient way to deliver geolocation to many network devices.

  • Patent number: 8243712
Abstract: A method for time synchronizing base stations in an asynchronous cellular communication system via multi-communications mode user equipment is described. The method includes receiving time-of-day in a synchronous cellular communication signal with the user equipment operable in a synchronous cellular communications mode. Alternatively, time-of-day is received from a non-cellular system signal with user equipment that is operable to receive signals from the non-cellular system. After time-of-day is received the user equipment is switched to operate in an asynchronous cellular communications mode. Then a frame boundary of a received asynchronous cellular communication signal is time-tagged. Timing information is then transmitted to an entity of the asynchronous cellular communication system to determine time-of-day at the entity.

  • Patent number: 8213487
Abstract: A method according to an embodiment obtains a list of peaks for each of a number of frequency hypotheses. Each peak has an energy result and corresponds to a code phase hypothesis. Embodiments include methods and apparatus that may be used in identifying a location of a signal (such as a GPS signal) in a two-dimensional search space. Location information may be further applied to operations such as signal acquisition, signal tracking, position location of a receiver, and timing operations such as the synchronization of one or more other processes.

  • Patent number: 8175567
Abstract: Techniques to search for signals while in an out-of-service state are described. In an aspect, a network entity may collect information for wireless devices within a designated area, determine at least one search parameter (e.g., a scan rate) based on the collected information, and provide the search parameter(s) to wireless devices within the designated area. The wireless devices may perform searches for signals in accordance with the search parameter(s) when they are out of service. In another aspect, a wireless device may collect information related to out-of-service events encountered by the wireless device, send the collected information to the network entity, receive the search parameter(s) from the network entity, and perform searches in accordance with the search parameter(s) when out of service. In yet another aspect, the wireless device may determine the search parameter(s) based on the collected information.

  • Patent number: 8160604
Abstract: A system for and method of deriving a position estimate of a receiver from a plurality of parameter measurements is provided. Each measurement is derived from a correlation function, which in turn is derived by correlating a signal received at the receiver with an identification code uniquely identifying a transmitter visible to the receiver. A plurality of position estimates are derived, each from a different subset of the plurality of measurements. Based on local topography, one of the position estimates is selected as the best estimate of the position of the receiver.

  • Patent number: 8145769
Abstract: The subject matter disclosed herein relates to a system and method for negotiating a version of Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) between a network entity and a SUPL enabled terminal. In a particular implementation, a SUPL initiation message is transmitted from a network entity to a SUPL entity, where the SUPL initiation message identifies a plurality of SUPL versions capable of supporting a desired service. A response is received from the SUPL entity that is based, at least in part, on an ability of the SUPL entity to support at least one of the plurality of versions.

  • Patent number: 8144682
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating and use of a position location reference signal that allows a receiver to receive position location signals from relatively weak signal generators when in the presence of a strong signal source. The position location reference signals from multiple sources can be synchronized to occur within a scheduled time slot of a time division multiplexed communication system. During the scheduled time slot, each signal source can configure a transmission that includes a media access control address that corresponds to a value reserved for position location signals. Each signal source also configures the transmission to include a position location reference signal that corresponds to the signal source. The position location signals from each of the signal sources is positioned to occur at a time within the data portion of the scheduled time slot that no neighboring signal source transmits its corresponding position location signal.

  • Patent number: 8139593
Abstract: Aspects disclosed herein address the need in the art for memory management for high speed media access control. A packet buffer may store packets with a first data structure, comprising the packet length, sequence number, and a pointer to a second data structure. Packet data may be stored in a linked list of one or more second data structures. Transmit and receive queues may be formed using linked lists or arrays of the first data structures. Memory locations for storing first and second data structures may be kept in lists indicating free locations for the respective data structure types. A flexible memory architecture is disclosed in which two configurations may be selected. In a first configuration, a first memory comprises per-flow parameters for multiple flows, and a second memory comprises a packet buffer. In a second configuration, the first memory comprises per-flow pointers to per-flow parameters in the second memory. The packet buffer resides in a third memory.

  • Patent number: 8081990
Abstract: A method of and system for calibrating a repeater in a wireless communications system are provided. The one or more calibration parameters for the repeater are derived from (a) time measurements derived from one or more signals relayed by the repeater and received at a plurality of different measurement positions, and (b) the positions of the measurement locations. In one application, the one or more parameters are used in determining the positions of subscriber stations in the wireless communications system.
