  • Patent number: 5354185
Abstract: A compressor is disclosed having an electromagnetic actuator for driving the piston in the compression cylinder. The actuator includes an electromagnetic element having a core and a coil. The core has an electromagnet surface and a channel extending through the core. The coil is disposed in the channel. An axially reciprocating armature element is interconnected with the piston. The armature element defines an axial stroke having a stroke midpoint and a stroke peak. The armature element also has an armature surface dimensioned to align with and correspond to the electromagnet surface at the stroke peak. The actuator also includes a primary spring disposed on one end of the armature element for biasing the armature from movement in an axial direction. A secondary spring is disposed on the opposing end of the armature element and biases the armature from movement in an opposite axial direction. The armature is biased by the springs to resonate at a pre-determined frequency.

  • Patent number: 5350153
Abstract: An improved electromagnetically actuated valve is disclosed. The improved valve design includes a layer of structurally stable, non-magnetic material, preferably Kapton or Chrome, disposed intermediate the core element and the electromagnetic element of the valve, and a core element and electromagnetic element fabricated from a high electrical resistive iron material. The layer of non-magnetic structurally stable material and high resistance core element serve to eliminate the hysteresis effect in the magnetic force of the valve. The core element may also include radially extending or axially extending perforations through the core element. The axial and radial perforations serve to reduce the weight of the core design and the axial perforations serve to reduce the effect of the air spring created in the gap as the core element approaches the electromagnetic element during operation of the valve.

  • Patent number: 5325699
Abstract: A linear electromagnetic actuator has it core mounted to a can body forming apparatus and its coil attached to re-draw sleeve of such apparatus. The actuator provides for the axial movement of the re-draw sleeve between its fully retracted position and its fully extended position. The re-draw sleeve and the coil are coaxially mounted to each other so that the force exerted on the re-draw sleeve is also coaxial. Once the re-draw sleeve is in its fully extended position, an electromagnet is turned on so that the re-draw sleeve exerts the requisite force on the can material preform. The electromagnet is mounted coaxially about the re-draw sleeve and exerts its force on a magnetic material ring mounted to the re-draw sleeve to hold the re-draw sleeve against the can material preform.

  • Patent number: 5321762
Abstract: A voice coil actuator includes a magnetic flux conductive material core, a magnet and an electrical current conductive coil. The core has a first surface and a continuous channel disposed in said first surface. The channel has a pair of opposing walls. The magnet is disposed in intimate contact with a first one of said walls and spaced from a second one of said walls so that a gap remains between the magnet and the second one of the walls. The magnet has a first face of a first magnetic polarity facing the first one of the walls and a second face of a second, opposite magnetic polarity facing the gap. The magnet is further spaced from a bottom of the channel so that magnetic flux is substantially normal from the second face across said gap to the second one of the walls.

  • Patent number: 5278953
Abstract: A video image of the article to be produced is displayed on a computer. A first geometric shape is developed to enclose fully the video image of the article. The first geometric shape provides a video image of a workpiece of machinable stock and the approximate unscaled dimensions of the workpiece. A selection is made from a library of known machine tool tables to select the exact type of machine tool table to be used to produce the article. The video image of the table is positioned visually underneath each of the video image of the article and first geometric shape. The video representation of the machine tool table includes a frame of reference origin which corresponds to the actual machine tool table zero reference.

  • Patent number: 5245369
Abstract: Optical energy from a broadband source is focused on an aperture in an opaque member. The energy exiting the aperture is received off axis by a parabolic mirror which collimates the energy. The collimated energy is reflected from each planar mirror of an actuated mirror array. The reflected energy from the mirror array is re-reflected to the aperture by the parabolic mirror. The orientation of each planar mirror determines the flux which passes through the aperture or is reflected by a reflective face of the opaque member. The energy reflected from this face which is derived from each mirror corresponds to the flux intensity for a corresponding pixel. This energy may then be focused on a screen to display the scene.

  • Patent number: 5207239
Abstract: A variable gain control apparatus for a servo assist system includes a position sensor, a valve, a controller and an actuator. The valve has an actuated member and a variable flow orifice to communicate hydraulic fluid between the high pressure supply line and a reservoir of hydraulic fluid. The position of the actuated member determines the cross sectional area of the variable flow orifice. The position sensor determines the present position of the actuated member. The controller determines a position error between the present position of the actuated member and a varying predetermined position of the actuated member. The actuator in response to the position error actuates the actuated member to eliminate the position error so that assist pressure to the servo assist system is varied as a function of the varying predetermined position.

  • Patent number: 5175465
Abstract: An actuator for tilting the plane of an object is constructed from a stack of piezoelectric or electrostrictive members. First alternate interstices between the members are filled with a first conductive material, except that a first gap remains between the material and one side of the stack. Similarly, second alternate interstices between the members are filled with a second conductive material, except that a second gap remains between the material and an opposite side of the stack. The first gap and the second gap have unequal depth into the stack. The first material in the first interstices is coupled in common and the second material in the second interstices is coupled in common. A voltage applied between the first material and the second material will thereby cause the stack to bend, thereby tilting the plane of the op of the stack.
