  • Patent number: 5857453
Abstract: A precision slot cutting machine for concrete and asphalt pavement includes a self propelled unit with an operator's station and a blade platform is attached to the self propelled unit by a pair of pivot arms which allow the blade platform to freely pivot about an axis parallel to the path of travel of the self propelled unit. The blade platform is supported by a short based wheeled carriage with two independent wheel supporting bars, each of which is attached to the blade platform via a single pivot axis. The pivotal attachment between self propelled unit and blade platform and the independent pivoting action of the wheel supporting bars insure that variations which occur in the pavement surface both in directions parallel to and across the travel path of the machine are compensated for to allow precise cutting of slots of even depth into the pavement.

  • Patent number: 5857716
Abstract: A coupling system for corrugated, flexible metal hoses includes fitting and washer assemblies. The fitting assembly comprises inner and outer fittings, the inner fitting being received on the hose and having a bore adapted to receive the washer assembly. The washer assembly includes an O-ring, a backer washer and an expandable washer. The O-ring forms a seal connection with the flexible metal hose and the fitting assembly. The expandable washer provides a stop against which the backer ring is pushed by the O-ring. The expandable washer is also clamped between the fitting assembly and a corrugation of the flexible hose to resist withdrawal of the latter. Modified embodiment hose coupling systems are also disclosed and include inner and outer gaskets, compression gaskets, termination plates mounting the outer fitting and different combinations of retainer rings, backer rings and gasket rings.

  • Patent number: 5842817
Abstract: A compression or jacking ring includes a first component constructed of two layers of a material that is comparatively non-elastic and has a Poisson's ratio preferably not greater than 0.3. A second component that is comparatively elastic and has a comparatively high Poisson's ratio is sandwiched between sections of the first component. The compression ring is sized and shaped to be positioned between facing surfaces of pipe sections in a string of pipe sections utilized for forming a pipe within a pipe receiving tunnel. In particular, the compression ring is constructed to transfer a load between adjacent pipes during insertion of the pipes into a tunnel so as to spread the load over a comparatively large surface area if the pipe sections become non-axially aligned relative to one another during insertion so as to reduce the likelihood of breakage.

  • Patent number: 5829497
Abstract: A stump grinder designed for pivotable attachment to the three point hitch of an agricultural tractor via a pivot frame and includes a stump grinding wheel driven by the tractor PTO. The stump grinder includes a frame with an outer sleeve which telescopes over an inner sleeve, which inner sleeve is attached, in turn, to a stump grinder assembly which includes the grinding wheel. A first, telescoping hydraulic piston & cylinder unit selectively extends the stump grinding assembly and a second reciprocating piston & cylinder unit selectively pivots or reciprocates the stump grinder assembly from side to side. An optional hydraulic pump can be attached to the stump grinder assembly to drive one or both piston & cylinder units if the tractor is not so equipped.

  • Patent number: 5829256
Abstract: An apparatus for cryogenically freezing tissue specimens includes a linear motion platform and a pair of rotary motion platforms. The rotary motion platforms can be used alternatively with respect to the linear motion platform and a mechanism is provided to automatically trigger the linear motion platform for movement and to reset the linear motion platform when the rotary motion platforms are placed in covering relationship with or removed from covering relationship with respect to the linear motion platform. Cryogenic fluids are supplied to tissue receiving cryogenic discs on the various platforms through flexible plastic tubing. The tubing that supplies cryogenic fluid to the rotary motion platforms is constructed so as to form a series of loose loops in conjunction with tails that are mounted over a central rod to allow movement at cryogenic temperatures.

  • Patent number: 5820217
Abstract: A furniture glide system for a furniture piece having a horizontal lower support member includes a pair of opposed outwardly facing indentations on the lower support member and a glide. The glide is generally channel-shaped with a pair of opposed, inwardly projecting bosses. When the glide is installed on the furniture piece, it retains the furniture piece lower support member in the channel and the shoulders of the indentations engage corresponding surfaces on the bosses to secure the glide against axial travel and rotation about the lower support member. The sidewalls of the glide may be notched above the bosses for receiving a shoulder which projects outwardly from the indentation in the lower support member. The sidewalls and end walls of the glide may be angled to impart stability and to facilitate sliding of the furniture piece over floor surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5816035
Abstract: A front mounted mower deck includes a mounting and support assembly for operably joining the deck to a motorized vehicle. The mounting and support assembly includes a pair of pusher bars swivelly attached at one end to the deck and at the opposite end to the vehicle. A hanger is pivotally mounted on each pusher bar and includes a slot which receives a slot follower mounted on the deck to allow articulation from side to side by movement of the slot followers in the slots. Each hanger is biased to maintain an associated slot follower in the slot therefor. However, the hanger can be manually manipulated to overcome the biasing force so that the slot followers are released from the slots, thereby allowing the deck to be rotated about the connection with the pusher bars to provide for cleaning, maintenance, etc.

  • Patent number: 5818593
Abstract: An improved lens for flaw highlighting light panels having at least one light colored translucent strip adjacent at least one dark colored opaque strip and a narrow reference strip which is luminescent or of intensified light and which extends across at least a portion of the dark colored opaque strip. The characteristics of the reflected light from the luminescent or intensified light reference strip makes the reference strip stand out more than a reference strip which is not luminescent or of intensified light thereby facilitating the detection of dents.

  • Patent number: 5816767
Abstract: A transport locking system for a movable-deck trailer includes a telescoping sleeve which is positioned in parallel with a main deck piston and cylinder unit beneath the trailer deck. The main cylinder and the telescoping sleeve are placed in a neutral position when the deck is in the transport position, extended to raise the deck to a dock high position, and retracted to lower the deck to a ramp position. A locking bar is pivotably mounted atop the telescoping sleeve and the locking bar is controlled by a locking piston and cylinder unit to selectively engage or disengage a recess in the sleeve to thereby lock or unlock the sleeve, and thus constrain the deck to the transport position. A switching and control system is provided to coordinate the control of the main deck piston and cylinder unit with the control of the locking piston and cylinder unit.

  • Patent number: 5817054
Abstract: A veterinary implanter includes an attached disinfectant dispenser including a reservoir for holding a quantity of disinfectant, a pump attached to the reservoir, and a special needle holder spray tip with the implanter including a conduit which has an inlet opening connected to the disinfectant pump. An exit opening of the conduit is coupled to the needle spray tip which is designed to spray disinfectant 360 degrees about the inlet end of a hypodermic needle cannula which is held in place against the spray tip by a threaded needle holder extension. The inventive disinfectant dispenser thus allows an operator of the implanter to selectively inject a quantity of disinfectant into the needle with each implant, with the disinfectant then being carried by the implanted pellets into a wound created by the needle.

  • Patent number: 5813601
Abstract: A temperature responsive flow control valve has a plunger type actuator positioned in a fluid flow passageway between a valve head and an adjustable abutment member. The actuator includes a canister filled with a heat expansible material which expands upon heating to drive the actuator from the canister so as to engage the valve head and drive it out of seated engagement with a valve seat against the biasing force of a spring. The abutment member is axially adjustable toward and away from the valve seat to adjust the distance therebetween. By adjusting the distance between the abutment member and the valve seat the temperature at which the actuator expands to a sufficient degree to open the valve may be adjusted. A controlled leak through the valve is provided.
