Abstract: A streamlined method for purifying alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) from an AAT-containing protein mixture, such as a Cohn fraction IV precipitate, is provided. In the method of the invention, contaminating proteins are destabilized by cleavage of disulfide bonds with a reducing reagent, such as a dithiol, which does not affect AAT. The destabilized proteins are then preferentially adsorbed on a solid protein-adsorbing material, without the addition of a salt as a precipitant. Separation of the solid adsorbent from the solution leaves a purified AAT solution that is directly suitable for chromatographic purification, without the need for extensive desalting as in prior art processes. A process incorporating this method, which provides pharmaceutical grade AAT in high yield on a commercial scale, is also described.

According to another embodiment, the peripherals device includes a conformal cavity for receiving a handheld communications device in a secure fashion. According to yet another embodiment, the peripherals device includes a data collection device for collecting data and using the interface for sending the collected data to a remote processor for further processing. The data collection device can include an image reader, a barcode reader, a signature capture device, an optical character recognition. In yet another embodiment, there is a power subsystem that powers the peripherals device and the handheld communications device. The power system has a low power state to conserve energy.
Abstract: A variable equalizer apparatus for forward and/or reverse equalizers in an amplifier. The system can include a structure to allow continuous contact of the signal flow as an equalizer is removed; jumpers with fixed resistors and associated capacitors and inductors to produce a variable range over many different values; and/or variable resistance potentiometers with fixed resistors and associated capacitors and inductors to produce a variable range over separate value equalizers.
Abstract: The present invention provides isolated and purified DNA encoding feline CD80 (B7-1) ligand, feline CD86 (B7-2) ligand, feline CD28 receptor, or feline CTLA-4 (CD152) receptor, as well as vectors comprising nucleic acid encoding feline CD80, feline CD86, feline CD28, or feline CTLA-4. The present invention provides a host cells transformed with CD80-encoding vectors, CD86-encoding vectors, CD28-encoding vectors, or CTLA-4-encoding vectors. The invention provides polypeptides encoded by the nucleic acid of feline CD80, feline CD86, feline CD28, or feline CTLA-4. The present invention provides a vaccine comprising an effective amount of polypeptides encoded by the nucleic acid of feline CD80, feline CD86, feline CD28, or feline CTLA-4. The present invention also provides vaccines which further comprise immunogens derived from pathogens. The invention provides for vaccines capable of enhancing an immune response. The invention also provides for vaccines capable of suppressing and immune response.

Abstract: An electro-acupuncture device for controlling nausea. The device includes a wristwatch like housing, circuitry for generating electro-acupuncture stimulus disposed within the housing, and a strap for securing the housing to the wrist. The device also includes a pair of D-shaped electrodes disposed on the bottom outer surface of the housing. A gasket made of an electrically non-conductive material is applied to the bottom outer surface of the housing. The gasket has apertures which are sized and shaped to receive the D-shaped electrodes. When the device is strapped to a patient's wrist, the electrodes contact the wrist and provide electric stimulation to the wrist.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a speech editor for creating a session file having text segments synchronized with an audio file. The editor receives a text segment and a first file that has tag information lines associated with the text segment. Each tag information line has a portion of original text transcribed from the audio file and a corresponding audio length value. The editor stores the audio length of a current line in a new tag information line for the second file, determines whether the original text portion of the current line is found in the text segment, and if the original text portion of the current line is not found in the text segment, identifies a corrected text of the text segment adjusting the audio length of the new tag information line of the session file to correspond to the corrected text.

Abstract: Methods for detecting the breakdown potential of a semiconductor device having a thin dielectric layer are disclosed. The method includes measuring a spectroscopy of the thin dielectric layer and determining whether the spectroscopy exhibits the presence of a breakdown precursor (H2, H interstitial radical, H attached radical, and H attached dimer). Preferably, the method is carried out in the presence of a substantially significant applied electric field across dielectric layer. A semiconductor device tested in accordance with this method is also disclosed. Additionally, methods for reducing dielectric breakdown of a semiconductor device having a thin dielectric layer involving the substitution of a second molecule for H2 molecules present in the dielectric. This second molecule preferably does not react with Si or O to form an undesired attached state and may be an inert gas having a molecular size approximating that of a Hydrogen atom, such as Helium.

Abstract: A rotating wall vessel is used as a culture vessel and bioreactor for the cultivation of hepatocytes in the form of spheroids to generate a culture with many properties of the intact liver. These properties include enzyme activity comparable to fresh cells and long-term maintenance of viability and cellular function for periods on the order of months. The cultures may be used to produce hepatocyte products, evaluate metabolism of an agent, propagate Hepatitis C virus and test agents as inhibitors of this virus. Thus, the culture system disclosed herein makes long term functional cultivation of human hepatocytes feasible.

Abstract: A system and method for providing cord, hose and cable fastening (CHCF) so Industrial, Commercial and Home users (ICAHUs) can assure that cords, hoses and cables, including but not limited to electrical cords, cannot be accidentally disconnected or unplugged. The system and method allows ICAHUs to work safely and efficiently and to avoid cords, hoses and cables that may accidentally disconnect or unplug themselves in the course of everyday use. ICAHUs can easily apply collar mechanisms to the end of cords, hoses or cables aft of said cord's respective plug ends, hose's ends or cables' ends, and then subsequently attach said collar mechanisms together using a series of collar ties that are adjustable in length and tension, and tie connectors which facilitate said adjustment of said collar ties. The method comprises a system in which cords, hoses and cables, including but not limited to standard electrical cords may be fastened together then held tightly together without easily becoming accidentally unplugged.
Abstract: An adjustable pet door having decorative and customizable aesthetic features. The pet door includes subframe assemblies that are connected to each other with fasteners that extend through an aperture defined by a door. The pet door can be adjusted to fit doors of various sizes by varying the number of module core frames disposed between the subframe assemblies. The core frames extend laterally between the subframe assemblies and define a passageway through the door. Decorative frames are releasably attached to the subframe assemblies and can be removed or replaced without having to remove the subframe assemblies from the door. A security panel can be secured to one of the subframe assemblies to prevent animals and intruders from entering a residence through the pet door.
