  • Patent number: 6327838
Abstract: A method for folding an airbag for an airbag module involves straightening the airbag out in the direction of a straightening axis, starting from a gas inlet opening of the airbag. The airbag in the straightened-out state, or during the straightening-out operation, is pushed into a guide sleeve in the direction of the straightening axis. The airbag is then pushed together, and in the method folded, within the guide sleeve in the longitudinal direction thereof, in the direction of the straightening axis. An apparatus for folding an airbag for an airbag module has a straightening ram which, for the purpose of straightening out the airbag, can be pushed into the latter in the direction of a straightening axis by way of a gas inlet opening which has a guide sleeve. The guide sleeve is arranged coaxially with respect to the straightening ram. The straightening ram can be pushed along the straightening axis.

  • Patent number: 6322017
Abstract: A seat belt retractor has a spool that is rotatable about an axis for receiving seat belt webbing. A locking means prevents rotation of the spool during a crash to prevent webbing payout. A load limiting means has a torsion bar extending through the spool and connected in a force path between the locking means and the webbing. One end of the torsion bar is attached to the spool, and the opposite end of the torsion bar is attached to a toothed wheel, wherein said opposite end of the torsion bar is connected to the toothed wheel in an axially adjustable manner.

  • Patent number: 6322018
Abstract: A lockbar for a seatbelt retractor has an elongate joining member and two end pieces joined to the joining member at opposite ends therefore. The end pieces are made of a higher strength material than the joining member. The joining member may be made by extrusion and may be tubular or may be formed as a hollow member. The end pieces may be produced as forgings, die casting or plastic injection moldings or by other suitable methods. They can be produced from different materials and to different designs to suit the specification of the seatbelt retractor. Hence a single basic seatbelt retractor design can be employed for a variety of strength requirements by selecting appropriate end pieces and an appropriate joining member.

  • Patent number: 6313418
Abstract: A shock sensor has a sensing mass mounted on a metallic reed or spring which, under the influence of a crash-induced acceleration, drives the spring against a contact to close an electrical circuit. The contact end of the spring is twisted to be oriented with respect to the fixed contact at an angle of 60 degrees out of the plane containing the spring. The sensor is oriented such that the acceleration force is approximately normal to the plane containing the spring. The angled contact increases reliability, reduces closure signal noise, and increases contact dwell time. Dwell time can be further enhanced for high shock loads by providing a two stage mass spring system. A second mass/spring combination is arranged so the motion of the second mass, after the first reed has made electrical contact, holds the contact closed.

  • Patent number: 6299090
Abstract: A restraint device for a seat belt that can be wound on a belt reel has a belt tightener adapted to be driven by a propellant gas. The ignition of the propellant gas increases the working pressure in the pressure chamber so that the driving part of the belt tightener is moved in the driving direction. A load limiter cooperates with the belt reel and, after blocking of the belt reel, allows extraction of belt webbing with energy consumption. The working pressure in the pressure chamber can be reduced by a gas blowout passageway and, when the load limiter is actuated, the driving part remaining in a driving connection with the belt reel can be moved counter to the driving direction.

  • Patent number: 6299093
Abstract: A vehicle seat belt retractor has a frame, a spool rotatably mounted to the frame and a spool locking device for locking the spool against rotation. The spool locking device includes actuating means for actuating the locking device. The actuating means is a support carrying a mass and a pawl, the mass being arranged to move from an initial position to an actuating position to actuate the pawl into engagement with the ratchet on the spool. The actuating means is an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the distance between the pawl and the ratchet. The adjustment mechanism may adjust the support relative to a housing, and adjust the tip of the pawl relative to the pawl body or a deformable pawl tip.

  • Patent number: 6286865
Abstract: A pretensioner for a vehicle occupant safety restraint has an outer casing that contains a gas generant. An igniter has igniter material disposed within an igniter housing. A pair of electrodes are connected to the igniter material. A grounding path connector link electrically connects the igniter housing to a grounding path. The connector link may be formed by springs connecting the outer case to the grounding electrode and an interference fit connecting the igniter housing to the outer case. The link forms a low resistance path to short circuit undesirable static charges in the unit that would otherwise tend to cause unintentional activation of the pretensioner.

  • Patent number: 6278924
Abstract: Motor vehicle safety system deployment is controlled by a biomechanical algorithm that considers a normalized frontal crash velocity and vehicle occupant status in determining safety system deployment strategy. Normalized frontal velocity is determined either by a radar type crash velocity detection system or by adjusting the radar velocity towards a crash velocity determined based on time-to-fire as determined by a single-point algorithm. The radar velocity or the adjusted greater velocity is normalized if necessary for crash type to a frontal velocity equivalent.

  • Patent number: 6275756
Abstract: A smart ignitor control system has communications output electronic circuitry and communications input electronic circuitry. The communications output electronic circuitry generates output serial clock, data, and handshaking signals for communication with a master ASIC that is adapted to communicate with a smart ignitor. The communications input electronic circuitry inputs data and handshaking signals from a master ASIC. Smart ignitors are in circuit communication with the master ASIC via an ignitor bus. Optionally, additional circuitry digitizes analog voltages and waveforms from the ignitor bus and transmits the digitized data to an electronic information processor.

  • Patent number: 6266855
Abstract: A seat belt buckle has a guide channel formed in a buckle frame into which a tongue connected to a seat belt can be inserted. An ejector, located in the guide channel acts, as an ejector spring in the ejection direction opposite to the insertion direction of the tongue. A locking element is mounted on the buckle frame and can be moved out of an unlocking position into a locking position in order to lock the tongue in the guide channel. A securing element is movable between a securing position for holding the locking element in the locking position and a release position for releasing the locking element. A blocking device is mounted on the securing element and is moved into a blocking position when the locking element is in the locking position. The securing element is held in the securing position against a movement into the release position, whereby the blocking device is held in the blocking position by the ejector.

  • Patent number: 6267315
Abstract: A seat belt retractor has a webbing spool fixed to a ratchet wheel having a plurality of teeth spaced about its circumference. A locking pawl has a plurality of teeth with a pitch less than the pitch of the teeth on the ratchet wheel. The pawl is arranged to pivot into engagement with the ratchet wheel, on activation of a crash sensor. Preferably there are two locking pawls and two toothed ratchet wheels. The two locking pawls may each have the same number of teeth or alternatively one may have an extra tooth which serves as a sensor tooth, engaging first with the spool ratchet wheel and phasing engagement of the other teeth as the load increases.

  • Patent number: 6264127
Abstract: A seat belt retractor has a spool on which seat belt webbing is wound, arranged for rotation about its longitudinal axis, for payout and winding in of seat belt webbing. A torsion bar is coaxial with the spool and has one end fixed to the spool. A ratchet is fixed to the other end of the torsion bar and a toothed wheel is fixed to the spool to rotate with the spool. A pivoting lock bar extends across the length of the spool, having at least one pawl fixed at each end, to engage with the toothed wheel and with the ratchet respectively. The pawl on the spool side is arranged to be weaker than the other pawl so as to shear under a predetermined force to allow the spool to rotate and the torsion bar to twist.
