  • Patent number: 5834679
Abstract: Methods for producing a gas generator for a vehicle occupant restraint system with an autoignition means are disclosed. The autoignition composition used in the method preferably comprises Pb(SCN).sub.2 and chlorate oxidizer which undergo rapid autoignition at temperatures from approximately 190.degree.-220.degree. C. The inventive method provides for the use of aluminum for the gas generator housing. Through the method of this invention, autoignition compositions are safely manufactured by wet blending and are installed via automation in the interior of the inflator housing. When aluminum housings are used, a barrier material is used to prevent corrosion of the aluminum by the autoignition composition. Optionally, the dried autoignition material is coated with a protective substance to prevent water absorption and mechanical abrasion.

  • Patent number: 5704639
Abstract: An airbag for use in an occupant protection system has a venting mechanism which allows inflation gas to vent from the airbag only after a predetermined inflation pressure is attained. The venting mechanism includes a ventilation opening and a sealing member overlying the opening which inhibits the venting of the inflation gas. The sealing member has a frangible region which remains intact below the predetermined inflation pressure, but which breaks open when the predetermined inflation pressure is exceeded.

  • Patent number: 5494038
Abstract: The need for a highly viscous couplant gel or water spray to form an acoustical couple for ultrasound testing is eliminated by employing an ultrasound probe module. A porous membrane and an ultrasound probe cooperate to define a chamber which contains a liquid acoustical couplant. When pressure is applied to the liquid acoustical couplant it passes through the porous membrane. The porous membrane and chamber are disposed such that ultrasound signals going to or away from the ultrasound probe pass through the liquid acoustical couplant and porous membrane.
