Abstract: A child-proof dispenser for pharmaceutical tablets capable of dispensing such tablets one at a time is disclosed. A sliding drawer with an open-topped tablet receptacle moves from a first position inside the dispenser where a tablet drops into the receptacle from a storage chamber to a second position outside of the dispenser. During this movement, a horizontal extension on the drawer prevents any further tablets from dropping out of the storage chamber. When the drawer is in the first position, detent means on such drawer mate in locking relation with detent means on a flexible arm of a locking member to prevent any movement of the drawer. Digital pressure on the flexible arm of the locking member will move the appropriate detent means out of locking relation to enable the drawer to move out and dispense the tablet.

Abstract: A process is provided for increasing the yield of active cells of Treponema hyodysenteriae by growing such cells in a nutrient medium containing a cholesterol-rich bovine fraction. Killed cells grown in this manner can be used to produce a bacterin which is effective against swine dysentery.
Abstract: Extracellular enzymes can be recovered from a whole fermentation beer by adding to the whole beer a mixture of a polymer and an inorganic salt. This total mixture produces an enzyme-rich polymer phase and a cell debris-containing, enzyme-poor salt phase which can be separated to produce an enzyme-rich product from the polymer phase.

Abstract: A method for determining the amount of IgG present in a neonatal foal or calf or in the colostrum of a dam or cow. The method involves contacting a body fluid sample with biologically inert latex particles, measuring the amount of agglutination which occurs, and determining the amount of IgG present. The latex particles are diluted to a final concentration of from about 0.25 to 2.0 percent (w/v) at a pH of from about 7.5 to 9.0 with a buffer. The body fluid is diluted to a range of from 0.01:5 parts to 0.01:2160 parts, v/v basis, at a pH of from about 7.5 to 9.0.
Abstract: Nonaqueous solution of a tetracycline antibiotic salt which is stable upon extended storage comprises a mixture of a tetracycline antibiotic salt, nonaqueous diluent, nonaqueous solvent, and nonaqueous nonionic solubilizer. It preferably also contains an antioxidant and a nonaqueous anionic solubilizer.

Abstract: A process is provided for decreasing the thermal stability of Mucor microbial rennet without substantially reducing its milk-clotting activity by contacting an aqueous solution thereof with a methionine-oxidizing means under conditions effective substantially to decrease the thermal stability of the microbial rennet. The resultant treated microbial rennet is dramatically less heat stable than untreated microbial rennet and can serve as replacement for calf rennet in traditional cheese-making processes. The preferred methionine-oxidizing means is hydrogen peroxide or dye-sensitized photooxidation.
Abstract: A novel glucose isomerase enzyme useful for the conversion of glucose to fructose can be prepared by growing under aerobic conditions a culture of Bacillus licheniformis ATCC 31604 in a medium containing appropriate nutrients and then recovering the enyzme therefrom.
Abstract: Apparatus for generating anaerobic atmosphere is described wherein a liquid and a composition which can react with such liquid to produce a reducing gas are placed in adjacent receptacles each sealed by a rupturable film. A rupturing means can then be inserted through the rupturable films to enable the liquid and composition to come into reactive contact and generate the desired gases. A catalyst is located in an adjacent receptacle which communicates with the surrounding atmosphere to catalyze the reaction between the reducing gas and oxygen to thus remove oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere.
Abstract: Apparatus and process are described for telescopically mating top and bottom molded petri dish members wherein the top and bottom members positioned in spaced, substantially coaxial face-to-face relation are moved along a predetermined path, and during travel along such path are moved toward each other into telescopic assembled relation.
Abstract: Organic acids, such as citric acid, malic acid and lactic acid, can be extracted from aqueous solutions thereof by contacting such solutions with a mixture of a water immiscible amine and a water immiscible organic acid dissolved in a suitable water immiscible solvent.
Abstract: A process is provided for improving the recovery of microbial cell biomass, which includes the steps of subjecting a culture broth containing chain-forming microorganisms to shearing conditions sufficient to shorten the chain-length of microbial cells whereby the packed cell volume of the cell biomass is substantially reduced and then recovering the thus treated biomass from the broth by centrifugation.
Abstract: Brewer's wort is prepared by a process comprising the steps of forming at 82.degree. to 88.degree. C. an aqueous mash containing malted cereal, unmalted cereal and an effective amount of a starch liquefying thermostable alpha amylase; maintaining the mash at such temperature until a substantial amount of the cereal starch has been liquefied; cooling the mash to a temperature of 60 to 65.degree. C.; adding an effective amount of starch saccharifying diastatic enzyme to the mash; maintaining the resulting mixture at 60 to 65.degree. C. until a substantial amount of the cereal starch has been saccharified; then raising the temperature of the mash to at least 72.degree. C. and maintaining the mash at this temperature until the starch has been completely converted.
Abstract: Casein with lowered cholesterol content is produced by dispersing within an aqueous medium containing casein and cholesterol an effective casein-cholesterol bond-reducing emulsifying agent, such as a polyglycerol fatty acid ester, and thereafter isolating the casein from the aqueous medium.
Abstract: A shaped bacterial cell aggregate having increased hardness is produced by adding previously-produced dried finely-divided bacterial cell aggregate to bacterial cell aggregate subsequent to its formation but prior to its shaping.
Abstract: Citric acid can be extracted from aqueous citric acid solutions by contacting such solutions with an N-substituted alkyl amide containing a total of at least twelve carbon atoms.
