Abstract: A device for removing and replacing a protective cover on a needle of a hypodermic syringe. The device includes a base member having a generally planar bottom surface together with means for securing the bottom surface to an external flat surface. A tubular member extends from the base member at a predetermined angle relative to the planar bottom surface. The tubular member includes an open end for receiving axially a needle with a protective cover and an inner surface defining an elongated cylindrical cavity having an inner diameter sligthly larger than the maximum diameter of the protective cover to be received therein. Tab means extending inwardly from the inner surface of the tubular member are provided to operably engage a lip on the protective cover when the cover is within the cavity. The lip is operable to engage at the tab means when the protective cover is urged thereagainst whereby the protective cover remains within the tubular member while needle is removed therefrom.
Abstract: A front piece for safety ski bindings having a sole holder adapted to be pivoted sideways against the force of a spring and serving to support the ski boot sole sideways and towards the front, a pedal for actuating a control mechanism which maintains the release resistance at least approximately constant and independent of the variable pressure applied to the pedal.
Abstract: A bioreactor and method of its operation are described comprising a vertical column with a lower reaction section filled with column packing particles classifiable by means of their differential settling rates in a liquid, and an upper disengagement section, preferably of larger diameter and of equal or greater volume than the reaction section, the two sections desirably being connected by a transition section in the shape of an inverted, truncated cone. Following initial classification of the packing in the reaction section, the packing is inoculated with microorganisms, and the bioreaction commenced by introducing nutrient feed at one end of the column, and withdrawing product at the other end. The packing is periodically cleaned, as required, by dispersing it into the disengagement section by passing liquid at an increased velocity upward through the column until contaminants have been dislodged.
Abstract: A pressure regulator including high and low pressure chambers separated by a divider having an opening, a closing member biassed to a closing position for closing the opening with a biassing force according to a desired pressure differential between the chambers, and a damping device for damping the resulting force on the closing member. There is also disclosed a fluid drainage system having a suction chamber with a suction regulator, and various arrangements of diaphragms for measuring pressure differentials. An anti-spill device for the draining system is disclosed as well.

Abstract: A Christmas tree stand includes a flat-bottomed, water-tight canister supported by adjustable legs mounted thereon, the adjustability feature accommodating uneven surfaces and crooked tree trunks. The interior of the canister has a transverse pentagonal shape, open at the top and bounded by side walls, a rear wall and a pair of convergent front walls, the latter forming an angled juncture. A screw crank extends through the rear wall transversely centered in, and above the middle thereof, opposite said juncture. The screw crank urges a rectangular free-floating push plate positioned in the canister's interior against the trunk of a Christmas tree positioned in the interior between the junction and the push plate. Rotation of the screw crank advances the screw end of the crank, applying pressure against the push plate, and through the latter against the tree, thereby positioning and securing the tree in the stand.
Abstract: A splicing device for concrete structural members includes two mating connectors positioned in axial alignment adjacent to each other that are interlocked by a key inserted through a keyway provided in the sidewalls of the connectors. Prestressing strands in the structural members to be spliced are fastened to the connectors by inserting them into axial holes located in the ends opposite the mating ends of the connectors, and thereafter wedging the strands within frustum-shaped cavities forming part of the holes, by means of frustum-shaped segments, or feathers, forced against the elements within the cavities. Apparatus and a method for installing the splicing device is also described.
Abstract: An apparatus for dispensing and returning reusable articles each identifiable with its own identification code, comprising: a pair of opposing, stationary arrays of locations, each location being capable of holding a reusable article therein and having its own particular location code; a memory adapted to store details of the location codes and the article codes in memory; a data receiver for receiving informational data from a patron; a receptacle for receiving and discharging the articles; a transfer mechanism for placing an article in a location in the arrays or removing an article therefrom, the transfer mechanism being movable relative to the arrays between operative engagement with any of the locations and the receptacle; an article code sensing device adapted to sense the article code of an article carried by the transfer mechanism; and a control device having means for receiving control information and for generating output instructional information and control signals, the control device being respon

Abstract: A micropower electronic motion detector including a sensing element and a source element for measuring the magnitude and direction of the relative motion of the sensing element with respect to the source element. Electronic apparatus for nulling the output signal of the detector and of other electronic sensing apparatus in its initial or static state is also disclosed. The detector may be used in a safety ski binding to measure the forces being exerted on a skier's leg so that a binding release or non-release decision may be made.
Abstract: A hand-held instrument for electrically stimulating tissue of a living body in the presence of body fluid comprising an elongated, relatively fine, electrically conductive wire having a planar conductive surface generally transverse to the axis thereof at one end. Insulation carried flush to the tip of the wire is provided along the peripheral surface of the wire to prevent shunting of electrical stimulus by the body fluid through such surface. A tube encases the insulated wire in a manner such that a portion of the wire is external to the tube and is adjustable relative thereto.

Abstract: A depository for receiving under conditions of security bank transaction deposits in envelopes of carying thicknesses one at a time, wherein the envelopes may contain coin in different sizes and numbers. The depository has a transport mechanism including a fixed upper platen, an endless belt having a lower flight movable below and supported by the fixed upper platen, and a lower platen movable with respect to the fixed upper platen at an angle downward from the belt and in the direction of belt travel when the belt is driven. An envelope being conveyed is pinched between the belt and a narrow longitudinal central ribbed plastic rail projecting upward from the movable lower platen. The plastic rail ribs have slippery low friction surfaces and the belt engages a low friction slippery surface portion of the fixed upper platen.
Abstract: An appliance for automatically brewing a beverage such as coffee, tea or the like comprising a reservoir for receiving a predetermined amount of water, a heating element for heating the water, a container adapted to receive coffee, tea or the like defining a wetting chamber and means for delivering heated water to the wetting chamber. The container includes an outlet port disposed a predetermined distance above the lowest portion of the wetting chamber wherein a predetermined head of water is consistently developed and maintained throughout the brewing cycle.
