  • Patent number: 6633017
Abstract: An improved system of igniting a plasma using a rapid voltage rise and thus causing ions that may be pre-existing to create secondary electron emission or the like is provided. In one embodiment, the voltage rise can be timed to be comparable to the transit time of the electrons across the plasma. It can also be arranged to achieve a voltage rise in less than 1000 microseconds, to result in a transition time that is less than one hundred times the transit time, to maximize the emission of secondary electrons, or even to merely result in collision energies ranging from 5 to 500 electron volts. The transition time can be controlled through an ignition control that may be programmable, may involve charging output storage devices, or may involve delayed switching to supply the increased voltage to the plasma after the storage elements have been more fully charged.

  • Patent number: 5747935
Abstract: Circuitry and techniques designed to allow stable and continuous delivery of alternating power to a processing plasma with switch-mode power supply (16) include a variety of embodiments. Parallel, series, and other circuit elements connected across switching element (7) are tuned so that energy at other than the fundamental frequency is absorbed and dissipated. This energy may be only at the second harmonic or it may be across broad frequency ranges through selecting high impedance at the fundamental frequency and relatively low impedance at other frequencies. In overcoming instabilities, oscillations, and even changing class of operation of the switch-mode power supply, the stabilizing element absorbs the energy to avoid allowing it to affect switch (7) of power supply (16).

  • Patent number: 5657587
Abstract: A floating areaway system which can respond to changing soils conditions (such as freezing, expansion, settling, or the like) utilizes a continuously adjustable attachment to the foundation or a free motion support. The system is particularly adapted to overhanging areaway enclosures such as may include an escape dement. The designs can range from slidable retainers to elastic members to rotating elements so that the areaway enclosure can move up or down with the soil. Shields, low friction surfaces, and waterproof elements can be included to assure continuous operation. Installation, whether new or retrofit, is facilitated through individual free motion support brackets which can accommodate previously installed areaway enclosures as well as a new enclosure. The brackets can be designed to be specific to particular designs, generic, removable, and reversible so that the mounting can be in either the interior or the exterior of the enclosure. Integral designs afford efficient manufacture and installation.

  • Patent number: 5645698
Abstract: Both methods and apparatus for achieving topologically precise thin film coating. The system focuses on coating systems to create compact discs using DC magnetron sputtering to avoid the occurrence of mousebites or visual imperfections at the termination edge on a masked substrate. Circuit elements are added to a switch-mode power supply which act to substantially reduce reverse currents after the signal is conditioned by rectifying and filtering a switched output. Fast acting diodes, placed in either series or parallel arrangements within the circuit involving the cathode and anode, are used with a low energy storage switch-mode power supply to completely eliminate the occurrence of mousebites on the aluminum coating or the polycarbonate substrate of the compact disc.
