  • Patent number: 7373843
Abstract: A sensor for a textured surface (e.g., a fingerprint) is provided. The sensor includes a flexible substrate and a flexible membrane supported above the substrate by one or more spacers. The sensor also includes multiple pressure sensor elements responsive to a separation between parts of the membrane and corresponding parts of the substrate. The membrane is conformable to the textured surface being sensed, so the variation in separation between substrate and membrane is representative of the textured surface being sensed. A preferred sensor array arrangement has a set of parallel substrate electrodes on the substrate facing the membrane and a set of parallel membrane electrodes on the membrane facing the substrate, where the substrate and membrane electrodes are perpendicular. The sensor array is preferably an entirely passive structure including no active electrical devices, to reduce cost. Row and column addressing circuitry can be provided as separate units (e.g.

  • Patent number: 7374363
Abstract: A removable bollard is provided. A bollard is attached to a bollard plate with a catch fixed to one end and a lock juncture fixed near the opposite end of the bollard plate. Additionally provided is a base plate with a catch receiver at one end of the base plate, a retractable latch and a latch receiver at an opposite end of the base plate. The retractable latch has a first position and a second position. In the first position the catch is encompassed by the catch receiver on the base plate to couple with the base plate end, where the retractable latch is then locked to the lock juncture to lock the bollard plate to the base plate. When in the second position, the retractable latch is recessed into the latch recess within the base plate and the bollard and bollard plate are removed, leaving an obstruction-free access way.

  • Patent number: 7372688
Abstract: A differential mode surge protection apparatus includes first and second solid state protection devices in series between respective input and output connection points. The apparatus may be provided in conjunction with a common mode protection apparatus such as an isolation transformer. Alternatively, the apparatus may be provided integrated into a single miniaturized protection package. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus includes a surge arrestor arranged to supplement protection conferred by the first and second solid state protection devices. The surge arrestor is capable of being triggered prior to breakdown of either the first or second solid state protection devices. The apparatus may be incorporated into digital processing cards such as LAN cards and also into cables to conveniently provide differential mode protection.

  • Patent number: 7369387
Abstract: An apparatus and method for temperature-dependent transient blocking employing a transient blocking unit (TBU) that uses at least one depletion mode n-channel device interconnected with at least one depletion mode p-channel device. The interconnection is performed such that a transient alters a bias voltage Vp of the p-channel device and a bias voltage Vn of the n-channel device in concert to effectuate their mutual switch off to block the transient. The apparatus has a temperature control unit that is in communication with the TBU and adjusts at least one of the bias voltages Vp, Vn in response to a sensed temperature Ts, thereby enabling the apparatus to also respond to over-temperature. In some embodiments the p-channel device is replaced with a positive temperature coefficient thermistor (PTC). The temperature control unit can use any suitable circuit element, including, among other a PTC, resistor, negative temperature coefficient element, positive temperature coefficient element, transistor, diode.

  • Patent number: 7363198
Abstract: Long Elements Method (LEM) for real time physically based dynamic simulation of deformable objects. The LEM is based on a new meshing strategy using long elements whose forms can be straight or arbitrary. The LEM implements a static solution for elastic global deformations of objects filled with fluid based on the Pascal's principle and volume conservation. The volumes are discretised in long elements, defining meshes one order of magnitude smaller than meshes based on tetrahedral or cubic elements. The LEM further combines static and dynamic approaches to simulate the same deformable medium, allowing modeling a three-dimensional internal state at any point inside the deforming medium from a reduced number of explicitly updated elements. Complex elastic and plastic deformations can be simulated in real time with less computational effort. The LEM is particularly useful in real time virtual interactions, soft tissue modeling, and graphic and haptic rendering.

  • Patent number: 7356663
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for searching multiple strings within a packet data using deterministic finite automata. The apparatus includes means for updating memory tables stored in a layered memory architecture comprising a BRAM, an SRAM and a DRAM; a mechanism to strategically store the relevant data structure in the three memories based on the characteristics of data, size/capacity of the data structure, and frequency of access. The apparatus intelligently and efficiently places the associated data in different memories based on the observed fact that density of most rule-sets is around 10% for common data in typical network intrusion prevention systems. The methodology and layered memory architecture enable the apparatus implementing the present invention to achieve data processing line rates over 2 Gbps.

  • Patent number: 7347060
Abstract: Described here are systems for regulating the temperature of a heating or cooling device without adjusting the input power. In general, the systems described here comprise a heating or cooling device and a controller. The heating or cooling device typically comprises a cold region and a hot region, there being a temperature difference between the two, and an input power. The controllers are configured to be placed in thermal contact with at least a portion of the cold region and at least a portion of the hot region, and are configured to create a path for heat exchange between the portions of the contacted hot and cold regions. The heat exchanged may be controlled and the temperature of the system may be user adjustable, or it may be automatically controlled.

  • Patent number: 7349103
Abstract: An apparatus and method for examining features of a sample with a broadband beam of light obtained from a long-wavelength source that may include two distinct emitters that emit a long-wavelength radiation and a short-wavelength source that emits a short-wavelength radiation. A passage is positioned between the sources and a reflective beam combining optics is provided for shaping the long-wavelength radiation to enter the short-wavelength source via the passage and also for shaping the short-wavelength radiation that exits through the passage and propagates toward the long-wavelength source. The reflective beam combining optics shape the short-wavelength radiation such that it re-enters the short-wavelength source via the passage and is combined with the long-wavelength radiation into the broadband beam that exits the short-wavelength source.

  • Patent number: 7346209
Abstract: A detection and classification method of a shape in a medical image is provided. It is based on generating a plurality of 2-D sections through a 3-D volume in the medical image. In general, there are two steps. The first step is feature estimation to generate shape signatures for candidate volumes containing candidate shapes. The feature estimation method computes descriptors of objects or of their images. The second general step involves classification of these shape signatures for diagnosis. A classifier contains, builds and/or trains a database of descriptors for previously seen shapes, and then maps descriptors of novel images to categories corresponding to previously seen shapes or classes of shapes.

  • Patent number: 7346166
Abstract: A system and method for quantum key distribution uses a regulated single-photon source to sequentially generate a first photon and a second photon separated by a time interval ?t. The two photons are directed through a beam splitter that directs each photon to one of two transmission lines, which lead to two respective receivers. When one of the photons arrives at a receiver, it passes through an interferometer. One arm of the interferometer has a path length longer than the other arm by an amount equivalent to a photon time delay of ?t. The photon is then detected in one of three time slots by one of two single-photon detectors associated with each of the two interferometer outputs. Due to quantum-mechanical entanglement in phase and time between the two photons, the receivers can determine a secret quantum key bit value from their measurements of the time slots in which the photons arrived, or of the detectors where the photons arrived.
