  • Patent number: 7238486
Abstract: A method of determining the length of a polynucleotide target is provided. With this method, a target is first hybridized to an array of first probes having different, determined lengths, resulting in the formation of duplexes between the polynucleotide target and the first probes. These duplexes have a single stranded section of target if the target is longer than the first probe it is in a duplex with. Next, a second probe having a determined length is hybridized to these duplexes. If the length of the target is greater than the length of the first probe it is displaced during this hybridization step by the process of branch migration. In contrast, if the length of the target is less than or equal to the length of the first probe, it is not displaced. Thus, the length of the polynucleotide target can be determined.

  • Patent number: 7235323
Abstract: In a fuel cell assembly with at least one cell including an electrolyte layer, a pair of gas diffusion electrode layers interposing said electrolyte layer between them, and a pair of flow distribution plates (5) for defining passages (10, 11) for fuel and oxidizer gases that contact said gas diffusion electrode layers, a heater 62 and various sensors (61a, 61b and 61c) are formed on at least one of the flow distribution plates so that the work needed for installing the heater and sensors is simplified. By embedding them in a substrate, the need for a complex sealing arrangement can be eliminated. In particular, if each flow distribution plate is formed by performing an etching process on a substrate, and forming the heater and sensors in succession to the step of forming each flow distribution plate, the installation of sensors and fabrication of the fuel call are simplified.

  • Patent number: 7212293
Abstract: Optical characterization of lateral features of a pattern is provided. A plane-wave optical response is calculated for each feature. At least one of these plane-wave responses is calculated from an effective optical property (e.g., a waveguide modal refractive index). Such effective optical properties depend on feature geometry and on intrinsic material optical properties. The plane-wave responses for each feature are combined to generate a modeled pattern response. By fitting the modeled pattern response to a corresponding measured pattern response, estimates for pattern feature parameters are obtained. The use of an effective optical property improves model accuracy, especially for features having a size on the order of a wavelength or less, without significantly increasing computation time.

  • Patent number: 7211979
Abstract: Torque control capability is provided to a position controlled robot by calculating joint position inputs from transformation of the desired joint torques. This is based on calculating the transfer function 1/E(s), which relates the desired joint torque to joint position. Here E(s) is a servo transfer function D(s) or an effective servo transfer function D*(s). The use of an effective servo transfer function D*s) is helpful in cases where joint nonlinearities are significant. The effective servo transfer function D*(s) is defined with respect to an ideal joint transfer function G*(s)=1/(Ieffs2+beffs), where Ieff is an effective moment of inertia and beff is an effective damping coefficient.

  • Patent number: 7188135
Abstract: A finite impulse response filter having tap weight rotation is provided, where each tap has a corresponding coefficient selector. Each coefficient selector includes N coefficients, where N is the number of taps. Each coefficient selector provides one of its corresponding coefficients as an input to a multiplier. Each multiplier also receives an input from a triggered track and hold tap. The tap coefficients are selected according to the time delay since the corresponding track and hold tap was most recently triggered. In this manner, the tendency of multiplier gain nonuniformity to degrade filter operation in the presence of tap weight rotation is reduced. In another embodiment, an offset selector is provided, to reduce the tendency of component offsets to degrade filter operation in the presence of tap weight rotation.

  • Patent number: 7185294
Abstract: A standard cell library having a globally scalable transistor channel length is provided. In this library, the channel length of every transistor within a cell can be globally scaled, within a predetermined range, without changing cell functionality, cell size, or cell terminal positions. Such a cell library advantageously addresses the intra-generational redesign problem, since cell channel lengths in library cells can be decreased as fabrication technology evolves, without requiring intra-generational redesign of existing circuit layouts. Preferably, this change in channel length is obtained by altering a single mask layer of the library design (e.g., the mask for the poly-silicon layer).

  • Patent number: 7170517
Abstract: A method to define a curved slab region of interest that includes vessels while maximally excluding surrounding soft tissue and bone is provided. The thickness of the curved slab is automatically adapted to the thickness of the vessel and follows the tortuous vessel(s) so that an increase in tortuousity does not result in a disproportionate increase in the region of interest required to enclose the vessel. A plurality of boundary pairs is determined in the view plane to define a vessel. Vessel-intensities are determined for each one of the boundary pairs. The boundary pairs with associated intensities define the view of the vessel in the projection plane. Context-intensity could be defined in the area surrounding the boundary pairs in the projection and/or transverse plane. The method also includes several steps that will result in a better boundary outline and view of the vessel.

  • Patent number: 7165422
Abstract: A cryogenic gas is liquefied using a refrigeration system [101] thermally coupled at an evaporator [125] to a cold end of a gas supply system [103] within a dewar [116]. The refrigerator has a minimum temperature at an evaporator [125] above the boiling point of the gas at atmospheric pressure but below the boiling point of the gas at a high pressure. Thus, the gas is compressed [128] to high pressure so it condenses when cooled by the evaporator [125]. As it expands at a flow restrictor [148], a portion evaporates and cools a fraction to the temperature of the boiling point of the gas at atmospheric pressure, producing liquefied gas. Opening a purge valve [142] sends warm gas upward through heat exchange section [146] and out through a three-way valve [138] for defrosting. To reduce clogging, the gas supply valve [138] is controlled by a gas purity sensor [158].

  • Patent number: 7148709
Abstract: A rigid column and a suspension knee are combined in a probe held in assembly via its column. The suspension knee has a base arm laterally connecting at and propagating away from the column. The base arm extends up to a lateral knee extension where a reverse arm continues from the base arm back in direction towards a central axis of the column. The reverse arm terminates in a contact tip in a tip offset to the column axis that is smaller than the lateral knee extension. During application of a contacting force onto the contact tip, a first deflection of the base arm and a second deflection of the reverse arm counter act in conjunction with base and reverse arms' structural configurations. As a result, scrub motion may be well defined in direction and magnitude without need for additional guidance of the deflecting probe structure.

  • Patent number: 7133856
Abstract: The present invention provides a powerful and robust classification and prediction tool, methodology, and architecture for supervised learning, particularly applicable to complex datasets where multiple factors determine an outcome and yet many other factors are irrelevant to prediction. Among those features which are relevant to the outcome, they have complicated and influential interactions, though insignificant individual contributions. For example, polygenic diseases may be associated with genetic and environmental risk factors. This new approach allow us consider all risk factors simultaneously, including interactions and combined effects. Our approach has the strength of both binary classification trees and regression. A simple rooted binary tree model is created with each split defined by a linear combination of selected variables. The linear combination is achieved by regression with optimal scoring. The variables are selected using backward shaving.

  • Patent number: 7131095
Abstract: The present invention provides a new way of optimizing integrated circuit (IC) designs in the physical design stage after detail routing. A key element is a novel hybrid layout representation referred to as the geotopological layout in which some nets are represented by their determined geometrical wiring paths and some by their respective wiring topology at the same time. In the IC design flow, a routed layout with geometrical wiring paths is transformed into a geotopological layout. All layout modifications are then performed according to the geotopological layout. An embedded design rule checker ensures the validity thereof. Finally, a new geometrical layout is regenerated accordingly, including all the layout changes for the targeted optimization. This geotopological approach advantageously enables an IC designer to modify a routed layout for various optimization targets, while advantageously maintaining the exact routing paths of critical nets that are not modifiable.

  • Patent number: 7116468
Abstract: Quasi-phasematching design to provide an approximation to a desired spectral amplitude response A(f) is provided. An initial phase response ?(f) corresponding to A(f) is generated. Preferably, d2?(f)/df2 is proportional to A2(f). A function h(x) is computed such that h(x) and H(f)=A(f)exp(i?(f)) are a Fourier transform pair. A domain pattern function d(x) is computed by binarizing h(x) (i.e., approximating h(x) with a constant-amplitude approximation). In some cases, the response provided by this d(x) is sufficiently close to A(f) that no further design work is necessary. In other cases, the design can be iteratively improved by modifying ?(f) responsive to a difference between the desired response A(f) and the response provided by domain pattern d(x). Various approaches for binarization are provided. The availability of multiple binarization approaches is helpful for making design trades (e.g., in one example, fidelity to A(f) can be decreased to increase efficiency and to increase domain size).
