  • Patent number: 5809937
Abstract: A farrowing crate is disclosed. The farrowing crate includes an end support and an opposed end support. Back and front portions extend therebetween. Back and front portions includes top and bottom rails and a plurality of bowed bars extending therebetween. Back and front portions include an arcuate section and a straight longitudinal section. The curvature of the bowed bars vary along the length of the back and front portions. The curvature of bowed bars increases as they approach the arcuate section. The curvature of bowed bars decreases as they approach support members. The farrowing crate of the present invention provides enough space for the sow to turn around 360.degree., this allows the sow to visually monitor her piglets in all directions and allows her to change posture more easily. The farrowing crate provides adequate room for the sow to stand and lie down comfortably when she is aligned along the diagonal.

  • Patent number: 5747791
Abstract: Devices for measuring one or more properties of a light signal is disclosed. More particularly the invention relates to devices for wavelength and power demodulation based on the use of quantum well electroabsorption photodiodes. In one aspect the invention provides and power and wavelength demodulation system based on a quantum well electroabsorption (QWEA) filtering detector. The input optical signal passes through an optical beam splitter with part of the signal input into a filtering detector which is a multiple quantum well electroabsorption (MQW EA) photodiode having a tunable bandgap and the other part into a reference detector. The input light signal is impinged on the QW diode perpendicular to the plane of the quantum wells. The output of filtering detector is amplified by an amplifier and the output of the reference detector is input into another amplifier. The output from reference detector amplifier serves as a measurement of the power of the input optical signal.

  • Patent number: 5733437
Abstract: A method for detecting organic molecules such as benzene, xylene, ethylbenzene and toluene present in trace quantities in aqueous solutions is provided. The method uses a zeolite having a multiple cage structure, specifically cages of two different volumes. The zeolite is chosen so that the organic molecules are able to access the zeolite on the basis of size. The small cages contain electroactive ions therein and the larger cages contain electroinactive counter cations therein. An aqueous liquid sample to be tested for small molecules is flowed into contact with the zeolite whereby at least some of the electroactive ions in the small cages are released into the aqueous liquid sample by small molecules entering the larger cages and coupling with the electroactive ions in the smaller cages and exiting the zeolite.

  • Patent number: 5725801
Abstract: New oxide phosphors based on doped gallium oxides, alkaline earth gallates and germanates for electroluminescent display materials. Bright orange red electroluminescence has been obtained in amorphous and crystalline oxides Ga.sub.2 O.sub.3 :Eu for the first time. SrGa.sub.2 O.sub.4 and SrGa.sub.4 O.sub.9 doped with 1-8 mole % of Eu and Tb, CaGa.sub.2 O.sub.4, Ca.sub.3 Ga.sub.2 O.sub.6 and CaGa.sub.4 O.sub.7 doped with 1-4 mole % of Eu, Tb, Pr and Dy, BaGa.sub.2 O.sub.4 doped with 1-2 mole % of Eu and Tb, have been prepared using RF magnetron sputtering onto ceramic dielectric substrates and annealed at 600.degree. C.-950.degree. C. in air or Ar for 1-2 hours. Bright electroluminescent (EL) emission was obtained with wavelengths covering the visible spectrum from 400 to 700 nm, and infrared emission above 700 nm with spectral peaks characteristic of rare earth transitions. The films of CaGa.sub.2 O.sub.4 with 1 mole % Eu achieved 22 fL (75 cd/m.sup.2) at 60 Hz and had a maximum efficiency of 0.

  • Patent number: 5721431
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for distinguishing a boundary of an object, and the object itself, from its background. In the method electromagnetic radiation is detected from at least two fields of view substantially spanning the boundary of the object and background adjacent to the boundary and superimposed or overlaid as images onto a detector. The method includes correlating spatial transitions in intensity of the overlaid images on the detector with a boundary of the object. When used for determining the attitude of a satellite with respect to the earth, the detector is a thermal infrared detector thereby providing a sharp contrast between the thermal emission of the earth and cold space. The invention provides a simple, effective method and device for determining satellite orientation and/or attitude with respect to a thermal infrared-emitting target body.

  • Patent number: 5496960
Abstract: There is disclosed a new boron-containing compounds such as bis-(pentafluorophenyl)borane, (C.sub.6 F.sub.5).sub.2 BH and related compounds and a method for producing the compounds. The new borane is suitable for use as a hydroboration reagent for the rapid hydroboration of alkenes and alkynes. The borane is also suitable for use as a hydroboration reagent to produce useful boron reagents that can be used in Ziegler-Natta homogeneous olefin polymerization catalyst systems. Specifically, the borane reagent can be used to produce Cp.sub.2 Zr{.eta..sup.3 -CH(C.sub.6 H.sub.5)[(.mu.-H)B(C.sub.6 F.sub.5).sub.2 ]}, which exhibits an efficacy for polymerization of ethylene.

  • Patent number: 5473995
Abstract: The present invention provides a pallet top constructed entirely of corrugated cardboard. In one aspect the pallet top includes a thick corrugate center panel and thick corrugate reinforcing edge pieces glued along the periphery of the center panel. The corrugate reinforcing edge pieces and the corrugate center panel are arranged so that the fluting of the edge pieces run perpendicular to the direction in which the fluting in the center panel runs thereby significantly increasing the strength of the resulting pallet top. A corrugated wrap sheet is provided having folding flaps along the edges thereof. The flaps are folded over the reinforcing edge pieces and glued to the top surface of the edge pieces. In another aspect the corrugate reinforcing edge pieces are tubes of rectangular cross section formed along the periphery of the center panel.
