  • Patent number: 5219480
Abstract: The present invention is directed to oil-soluble lubricating oil viscosity index improver/dispersant additives comprising Mannich Base condensates of a grafted ethylene copolymer, an optionally alkyl-substituted N-hydroxyaryl compound, an aldehyde, and a monosecondary amine, whereby oil solutions, particularly oil concentrates, of said additives which are characterized by minimal viscosity change over an extended period of time. These additives comprise a copolymer of ethylene with one or more C.sub.3 to C.sub.28 alpha-olefins, preferably propylene, which have been grafted with acid moieties, e.g. maleic anhydride, preferably using a free radical initiator in a solvent such as a lubricating oil, which is then either (a) reacted with an N-hydroxyaryl amine and then condensed with an aldehyde and a monosecondary amine to form the Mannich Base viscosity index improver/dispersant material, or (b) reacted with a preformed Mannich Base condensate of an N-hydroxyaryl amine, aldehyde and the monosecondary amine.

  • Patent number: 5118433
Abstract: Composition of matter useful as multifunctional viscosity index improver for lubricating oil comprising reaction product of:(i)(a) degraded ethylene-alpha-olein copolymer obtained by degrading copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer, said copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chains containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent ethylene, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than 2 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than 1.

  • Patent number: 5068047
Abstract: Degraded molecular weight copolymers of ethylene alpha-olefin are provided. The ethylene alpha-olefin copolymers, before degradation, are characterized by having a narrow molecular weight distribution and are comprised of intramolecularly heterogeneous and intermolecularly homogeneous copolymer chains. The degraded copolymers are useful as viscosity index improvers for oils.

  • Patent number: 5030370
Abstract: The novel compositions of the present invention comprise (A) lubricating oil and (B) at least one amino-substituted polymer (e.g., an ethylene alpha-olefin interpolymer substituted by primary amino or secondary amino groups). Preferred amino-substituted interpolymers comprise amino-substituted ethylene propylene norbornene terpolymers. The polymers of this invention are oil soluble and are useful as viscosity index improver dispersants in oleaginous compositions.

  • Patent number: 5006608
Abstract: The molecular weight and the thickening efficiency of primarily oil soluble hydrocarbon polymers, such as hydrogenated random copolymers and block copolymers of styrene-isoprene or styrene-butadiene, polyisobutylene, poly-n-butene, low unsaturation butyl rubbers, low unsaturation EPDM rubbers, preferably ethylene-propylene copolymers, of the type which are to be used as viscosity index improver additives or as precursors for dispersants and multi-functional viscosity improver additives for lubricating oils, are reduced by heating and masticating the polymers in the presence of oxygen or air and in the presence of a transition metal catalyst, preferably in the further presence of a peroxide accelerator.
