Patent number: 4909349Abstract: This invention relates to an emergency descending device having a life line, one end of which is adapted to be fixed at a high position, the other end of which is adapted to be extended to a low position, and a descending apparatus movably affixed around the life line and usually kept at a high position before operation. The descending apparatus is adapted to suspend a person and carries the person along the life line at a low speed from a high position to a low position. The improvement is characterized by the descending apparatus comprising a decelerating element which is a tubular member axially passed by the life line, forming a contact surface within the tubular member, and in addition, the contact surface being corrugated so as to increase the friction between the contact surface and the life line and reduce the descending speed of the descending apparatus while it suspends a person and lowers him/her from the high position.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1988Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Inventor: Shu-Huang Lin

Patent number: 4730927Abstract: A method and apparatus for the precision measurement of positions, dimensions, etc., of a pattern or mark formed on the surface of a flat object such as a photographic mask or reticle. The amount of vertical deviation of the object with respect to a reference plane is detected at each of a plurality of measuring points and the incline of the surface of the object with respect to the reference plane at each of the measuring points is determined in accordance with the amounts of deviation and the distance between the measuring points. The coordinate positions of each of the measuring points in the reference plane are measured in accordance with the amount of movement of the object parallel to the reference plane and the coordinate positions are corrected in accordance with the corresponding incline.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1986Date of Patent: March 15, 1988Assignee: Nippon Kogaku K.K.Inventors: Taro Ototake, Tatsumi Ishizeki

Patent number: 4729491Abstract: A plug, such as a vent plug for mounting in a hole in the wall of a machine element, e.g. the end wall of the rotor casing of a pump comprising a canned motor, comprising an outer cup provided with a support flange and an inner cup pressed into the outer cup and comprising a locking device. The locking device is preferably formed as a locking flange, e.g. in the form of part of a thread serving to interlock the plug and the wall. The distance between the locking device and a sealing face of the support flange or of a sealing element connected to the support flange is smaller than the axial displacement of the plug in connection with the engagement of the locking device with the wall.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1987Date of Patent: March 8, 1988Assignee: Grundfos International A/SInventors: Niels D.
