Patent number: 5713422Abstract: The present invention provides a drilling system for drilling a borehole. A motor continuously coupled to the drawworks may be utilized to raise and lower a drill stem to continuously control the weight on bit at a desired value. A second motor rotates the drill stem. A control circuit is coupled to both the motors and receives information from various sensors which includes information about the rate of penetration, weight on bit; hook load, and rotational speed of the drill bit. The control circuit controls the drawworks motor to control the drill stem motion in both directions. In one mode the a desired rate of penetration is maintained by controlling the weight on bit. In another mode, the control circuit causes the drilling to start at an initial rate of penetration and then it starts to vary the rate of penetration according to programmed instructions to optimize the drilling efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1994Date of Patent: February 3, 1998Inventor: Jasbir S. Dhindsa

Patent number: 5687447Abstract: The present invention provides a washing device with a stiff, elongated handle and a scrubbing element disposed at one end of the handle. Two adjacent openings extend through one end of the handle and opposed portions of the scrubbing element are disposed on opposed sides of the handle adjacent to the two openings. A clasp extends through the two openings, around the adjacent opposed portions of the scrubbing element, and around the portion of the handle disposed between the two openings, thereby affixing the scrubbing element to the handle.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1995Date of Patent: November 18, 1997Assignee: Bynum Concepts Inc.Inventors: Cheryl Bynum, Bart L. Bynum

Patent number: 5680905Abstract: An apparatus for actuating a firing head is disclosed. The apparatus contains a firing head that is operatively connected to a detonating cord of a perforating gun containing a series of shaped charges. The perforating gun will be connected to a work string in a wellbore filled with a fluid. The apparatus generally comprises a housing member having an inner portion and an outer portion; a blocking member for blocking passage of a hydrostatic pressure; a mechanical activation piston, adapted to be received within the housing member, for mechanically opening the blocking member. The apparatus further contains a hydraulic activation piston, adapted to be received within the housing member, for activating a percussion initiator firing member; and a transfer charge booster that transfers the detonation to a detonation cord.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 1995Date of Patent: October 28, 1997Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Robert R. Green, William D. Myers

Patent number: 5662170Abstract: A method and assembly for completing a well is disclosed. Generally, the method comprises the steps of positioning a stationary string in the well at a first position. The stationary string will have connected thereto a completion device for completing the well to a reservoir and a detachment apparatus for detaching the completion device from the stationary string. The method further comprises the steps of positioning a secondary string in the well, with the secondary string having a cooperating detachment apparatus for detaching the completion member from the stationary string. Next, the completion member is detached from the stationary string and attached to the secondary string, and the completion member is positioned at a second position which corresponds to a hydrocarbon zone. In one embodiment, the stationary string is a production tubing string, and the production tubing is attached to an isolation safety valve member for isolating the well from pressure.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 1996Date of Patent: September 2, 1997Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Joseph F. Donovan, Michael H. Johnson, Daniel J. Turick

Patent number: 5624718Abstract: The present invention provides a low-temperature method for producing electrocatalytic coatings for fuel cell electrodes. The electrocatalytic coating comprises a thin-film of diamond-like carbon doped with finely-dispersed catalytic agent, preferably platinum, platinum-ruthenium, or other catalytically active materials. The method may be scaled-up as a highly economical reel-to-reel process comparable to the manufacture of coated polymers for food packaging applications.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1995Date of Patent: April 29, 1997Assignee: Southwest Research InstitueInventor: Geoffrey Dearnaley

Patent number: 5622223Abstract: This invention provides a closed-loop system for in situ testing of formation fluid conditions and for selectively collecting substantially mud filtrate free formation fluid samples at original formation conditions. The system contains an elongated member having a probe that is sealingly placed against the wellbore formation to withdraw formation fluids. A surface controlled pump controls the flow of a fluid from the formation into a flow line placed in the elongated member. A pressure sensor provides downhole hydrostatic pressure and differential pressure sensor provides difference in pressure across two fixed points across the flow line. A temperature sensor and resistivity device are utilized in a conventional manner to respectively provide downhole fluid temperature and the resistivity of the formation fluid.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1995Date of Patent: April 22, 1997Assignee: Haliburton CompanyInventor: Rafael B.
