  • Patent number: 5857522
Abstract: This invention provides a fluid-handling system for use in underbalanced drilling operations. The system includes a first vessel which acts as a four phase separator. The first vessel includes a first stage for separating solids. Oil and gas are separated at a second stage. A pressure sensor provides signals to a pressure controller, which modulates a gas flow valve coupled to the vessel for discharging gas from the first vessel. The pressure controller maintains the pressure in the first vessel at a predetermined value. An oil level sensor placed in the first vessel provides a signal to an oil level controller. The oil level controller modulates an oil flow valve coupled to the vessel to discharge oil from the first vessel into a second vessel. Water is discharged into a third vessel. Water from the third vessel is discharged via a water flow control valve, which is modulated by a level controller as a function of the water level in the third vessel.

  • Patent number: 5853617
Abstract: It has been surprisingly discovered that the use of two different conventional defoamers give surprisingly and synergistic results when used together to suppress oil-based foams. The use of both a fluorosilicone together with a non-fluorinated siloxane give both reduced liquid carry over into a gas stream and reduced gas carry under into a liquid stream in a separation process. The fluorosilicone and non-fluorinated siloxane may be added together to a system producing an oil-based foam, or separately in any sequence. On some oil-based foams, the inventive blend achieves a level of performance unattainable by conventional defoamers at any dose. In most cases, better overall performance is obtained with the inventive foam suppressing blend at lower doses and less cost than with conventional defoamers used single.

  • Patent number: 5846056
Abstract: This invention provides a reciprocating pump system having means for determining the cylinder head pressure of at least one cylinder of each pump in the system. A control circuit continually determines the average cylinder head pressure, estimates the pump bearing life that has been consumed and the remaining pump bearing life from the pressure head information. The control circuit also controls the operation of the pumps as a function of cylinder head pressure. A temperature sensor coupled to the pump system provides temperature of the pump oil. The control circuit controls the operation of the pump as function of the pump oil temperature. The pump speed is decrease when the pump oil temperature exceeds a predetermined value. A vibration sensor coupled to the pump provides vibration level to the control circuit, which controls the pump operation in response thereto.

  • Patent number: 5842149
Abstract: The present invention provides a closed-loop drilling system for drilling oilfield boreholes. The system includes a drilling assembly with a drill bit, a plurality of sensors for providing signals relating to parameters relating to the drilling assembly, borehole, and formations around the drilling assembly. Processors in the drilling system process sensors signal and compute drilling parameters based on models and programmed instructions provided to the drilling system that will yield further drilling at enhanced drilling rates and with extended drilling assembly life. The drilling system then automatically adjusts the drilling parameters for continued drilling. The system continually or periodically repeats this process during the drilling operations. The drilling system also provides severity of certain dysfunctions to the operator and a means for simulating the drilling assembly behavior prior to effecting changes in the drilling parameters.

  • Patent number: 5811972
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a measurement-while-drilling logging tool which includes a minimum number of analog electrical and electronic components, and which instead utilizes digitally-controlled electronic and electrical components to obtain an accuracy which is not possible utilizing prior art measurement-while-drilling logging tools. Additionally, the present invention allows for calibration operations to be conducted before, during, and after logging operations. Preferably, the calibration operations are performed periodically or intermittently during logging operations, and recorded, to be utilized later in explaining any irregularities in the log data. This calibration operation during drilling operations is not found in prior art devices, and is rendered practical by the utilization of digitally-controlled electrical and electronic components in lieu of analog components which are traditionally utilized in logging tools.

  • Patent number: 5811973
Abstract: A propagation resistivity measurement-while-drilling system is used to determine the resistivity (or conductivity) of the conate formation fluid, the dielectric constant of the dry rock matrix, and the water filled porosity of the formation. One or more transmitter-receiver pairs are utilized with the transmitter component of the transmitter-receiver pairs operating at a plurality of frequencies. Water filled porosity measurements can be combined with an independent measurement which responds to the total fluid porosity of the formation to obtain a measure of formation hydrocarbon saturation in fresh or saline conate water environments.

  • Patent number: 5812068
Abstract: The present invention provides a measurement-while-drilling (MWD) system having a downhole computer and multiple downhole sensors. Relatively large amounts of basic or "raw" data are measured by downhole sensors, and these data are processed within a downhole computer to be reduced to parameters of interest, which may be utilized to control the drilling operation by downhole devices, stored downhole, telemetered to the surface, or both. The measurements may be correlated downhole with stored reference data thereby providing additional information pertaining to the drilling operation. Downhole depth correlation between downhole measured parameters may be made by utilizing surface determined or downhole determined borehole depth.

  • Patent number: 5799884
Abstract: The present invention is a universal shredder for shearing and cutting bulk material into pieces of a predetermined size. The apparatus has rotating shearing members that pull the bulk material down between the shearing members and shearing it into sheared pieces. Grooves formed by helically-shaped members extending from the bodies of the shearing members carry the sheared material downward to a main cutting member where the sheared material is cut by cutting teeth removably attached to the helically-shaped members as the cutting teeth pass through notches in the main cutting member. The cut pieces fall or are pushed through the notches in the main cutting member and pass through apertures in a screen positioned beneath the shearing members. The size of the apertures can be adjusted by moving the screen which is supported by a series of parallel ribs with lugs attached in a pattern that matches the pattern of the apertures of the screen.

  • Patent number: 5793625
Abstract: A circuit that involves the application of boost mode regulator techniques is used to regulate the output of an a.c. source. The source inductance becomes part of the boost mode circuit, thus avoiding the losses associated with the addition of external inductors. When a three-phase alternator is the power source, the circuit comprises a six diode, three-phase rectifier bridge, three FET transistors and a decoupling capacitor. The invention involves shorting the output of the power source to allow storage of energy within the source inductance. During this time, the decoupling capacitor supports the load. When the short is removed, the energy stored in the inductances is delivered to the load. Because the circuit uses the integral magnetics of the source to provide the step-up function, the efficiency of the design can be quite high.
