  • Patent number: 4794217
Abstract: A semiconductor wafer is transported by a mechanical system into or out of a quartz housing filled with a protection gas. The wafer is placed between and spaced apart from two graphite plates. A RF induction coil surrounding the quartz housing is used to heat the graphite plates. Radiation from the heated graphite plates heats the wafer from room temperature to an elevated desired temperature. During the time period when a wafer absorbs radiation primarily through electron-to-electron transition, heat convection and conduction by the protection gas conveys heat from the graphite plates to the wafer to accelerate the heating of the wafer and reduces temperature nonuniformity of the wafer.

  • Patent number: 4792179
Abstract: This invention attaches a flexible truck bed cover to the truck, by means of a plastic strip sewn into the cover, fitting inside a gap at the top of the bed, created by a supporting frame or a bed liner. The stretch in the flexible cover allows the plastic strip into the gap on all four sides of the bed and the contracting of the fabric keeps it in there, plus while the vehicle is in motion, the downward motion of the slipstream increases the forces holding the strip into the gap. A zip out access panel facilitates a separate opening within the cover itself for one-handed opening and ease of access by means of a U shaped panel behind the cab of the truck. Being the full width of the bed and 25 inches down the bed, it gives 10 square feet of access.

  • Patent number: 4789836
Abstract: A high resolution light pen comprises a collimation tube slidably mounted within a housing. The collimation tube includes an axially extending channel having a non-reflective surface. A photodetector is fixably mounted within the housing aligned with the channel. A lens is mounted adjacent to the front end of the channel and has a focal length equal to the spacing between the lens and an aligned pixel of the video screen. By this arrangement, all light rays emanting from an aligned pixel and passing through the lens are refracted axially along the channel and directed to the photodetector thereby maximizing the input thereto. The light pen further includes a discrimination circuit which generates computer interrupt signals for reading an address counter. The discrimination circuit generates an interrupt signal when the signal from the photodetector is valid. The interrupt signal is generated at a time which is substantialy independent of the slope of the signals thereby reducing the effects of jitter.

  • Patent number: 4785824
Abstract: An optical fiber temperature sensing probe for implantation into a human body or other object that is being heated either by ultrasonic radiation alone or by a combination of ultrasonic and electromagnetic (radio frequency or microwave) energy. Several embodiments are described of probes adapted to measure temperature in an ultrasound field without errors being introduced by direct absorption of ultrasonic energy or by viscous heating, even when plastic fiber is utilized.

  • Patent number: 4786879
Abstract: When impedance elements such as FETs are used in attenuators, the elements have linear responses only when the signals attenuated are below certain signal levels. When signal conditions causing the element to operate non-linearly are detected, bootstrapping is applied to reduce the voltage across the element so that the element will operate linearly. The control signal at the gate of the element is then modified to compensate for the increase in effective impedance of the element caused by bootstrapping. The improved attentuators are especially useful in signal compressors and expanders.

  • Patent number: 4781311
Abstract: A cap and container especially suited for dispensing liquids has a cap which is accurately aligned upon closure. The container is closed by applying downward axial pressure to the cap, thereby forcing lugs in the cap to pass over threads located on the neck of the container so that the cap is snapped on. Stop walls prevent any undesired cap rotation. Stabilizing lugs are alternatively provided to add additional stability. Alternatively, the container is closed by twisting or rotating the cap with respect to the neck. The cap may also be twisted or snapped off. Modifications in the neck configuration make the cap irremovable.

  • Patent number: 4782210
Abstract: An electrode used in a plasma-arc torch has ridges formed on the side surface thereof for initiating a pilot arc. The required voltage for initiating a pilot arc is substantially reduced by employing this type of electrode. The ridges have much smaller radii of curvature which substantially enhance the local electric field strength responsible for creating the pilot arc discharge. The ridges are oriented substantially along the flow lines of the plasma gas so as to create the least disturbance. In one embodiment with spiral gas flow, this results in helically oriented ridges. In another embodiment with straight gas flow, the ridges are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the electrode.

  • Patent number: 4779913
Abstract: An implement for digging, weeding and the like tasks, especially intended to allow for carrying out of such tasks by invalid and/or incapacitated people, the implement including two relatively movable members for gripping a weed, those two members in turn each being attached to an elongate handle. The handle includes means operably connected to at least one of the relatively movable members whereby to allow for the desired movement. The implement allows for digging, weeding, and the like tasks to be effected with a minimum of bending.

  • Patent number: 4778262
Abstract: Methods for generating holograms from a computer model of any object using a combination of numerical and optical means and the holograms produced thereby. An illumination model is provided to specify sources of light rays and dispersion particles of the object. Each light ray being specified by a path and an intensity function is traceable from a source via the object to a set of points in space by the computer. The hologram is synthesized from a plurality of smaller hologram elements. Each individual element sustains a field of view of the object. The light rays from the object lying within the field of view and along the lines of sight are sampled by the computer. Optical means are employed to physically reproduce the sampled light rays using coherent radiation. The reproduced coherent light rays are then interfered with a coherent reference beam to form the hologram element. Alternatively, the hologram elements are calculated by the computer with an analogous technique.

  • Patent number: 4777616
Abstract: Techniques for a logic analyzer instrument that permit the acquisition of digital samples from a plurality of logic signals in a large mainframe computer, or other system under test, in a manner that the signals can be reconstructed for viewing and analysis of the relationship between them. Edges of the signals are located, during their reconstruction, with many times higher resolution than that of the sampling clock. A plurality of sample records, asynchronously timed, are taken of the logic signals from the system under test, and the samples are combined in a way that locates logic signal edges with precision.
