Abstract: A machine for orienting, accumulating and positioning packages received from two sources for loading into containers has an oscillating member which oscillates between the two sources during which time it both receives packages from one source while participating in loading packages into a container from the other source. Associated with the oscillating member and with each source is an orienting mechanism which rotates packages received from its associated source so that they rest on a common one of their sides, an accumulating mechanism which collects the packages rotated by the orienting mechanism into a group of a predetermined number, a positioning mechanism which positions the grouped packages onto the oscillating member, and a loading mechanism which advances the positioned and grouped packages from the oscillating member into the container.

Abstract: An improved process for increasing the filling capacity of tobacco is provided in which tobacco is contacted with vapors of an expansion agent such as, for example, a low-boiling highly volatile hydrocarbon and/or halocarbon, at elevated temperature and pressure conditions, then releasing the pressure to about atmospheric pressure in a relatively short time period, such as from one second to ten minutes, so that the tobacco is expanded so as to increase its filling capacity in the absence of a subsequent heating step.

Abstract: Apparatus for preventing the escape of volatile treating agents into ambient air from a rotary treating drum used in treatment of particulate solids such as tobacco is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a flange on each end of the drum against which a washer is urged while a gas, such as air, is introduced between each flange and its associated washer ring.

Abstract: A thermocouple locator for holding a thermocouple inside a flexible pouch comprises a rigid frame that bears snugly against the pouch to prevent relative movement of the frame and pouch. The frame includes attachment means for securing a thermocouple to the frame.

Abstract: An apparatus for stripping the leaves from a cured tobacco plant including a conveyor which receives the tobacco plants with the leaves disposed on opposite sides of the conveyor. A clamping mechanism located adjacent the conveyor means which engages and holds the leaves as the stalk is continuously moved past the clamping means to pull the leaves from the stalk.

Abstract: A stationary elongated vessel of substantially circular cross section having side walls and end closures is provided with a plurality of rod-like projections rigidly secured to and extending radially inwardly from the side walls at predetermined locations. A rotatably supported shaft concentrically positioned within the vessel is provided with a plurality of finger-like appendages rigidly secured thereto and extending radially outwardly from predetermined locations on the sides of the shaft. Support means maintain the concentric position of the shaft and restrict axial movement of the shaft so that the finger-like appendages intermesh with the rod-like projections in non-contacting relationship during rotation of the shaft. Inlet and outlet means are provided to introduce into and withdraw from the vessel liquids and aerosol streams. Rotation of the shaft at appropriate speeds provides effective contact between the liquid medium and the aerosol stream in the vessel.
